  3. today- BJJ nite: Went over sweeps from half butterfly and chained it with a move to knee in followed by a transition to mount. Finished with D'Arce choke off a counter to the mount. 45 min free roll.
  4. I'm not a fan. It's the forced exhalation that's important for stabilizing the interthecal pressure and thus preparing you for a potential counter strike. No vocalization is needed. Personally, I don't think it scares your opponent any to add vocal components. What it does is telegraph action and destroy any surprise actions you might have intended to make. It also makes you look more aggressive in the eyes of bystanders. You'd be surprised what non-ma folks perceive when they are outside a conflict looking in.
  5. If you look mechanically at a punch however, it's nearly impossible to achive hip rotation without some sort of accompanying heel lift.
  6. today- Worked thru spider guard series: sweep, omo plata, triangle. 60 min free roll
  7. I disagree just a hair. Bear in mind, it's all semanitcs and matters little in the grand scope of actual confrontation. Master can be defined, in the ever changing realm of imperfect conditions for combat, as the ability to deploy basic tacitcs, on command, under stress, on the first try, without mistake. By this definiton, certainly not my own but one I ascribe to, one could attain at least the basic grasp of mastery. but that's just me. We worry too much about mastery. Con one engage sucessfully with tatic that they have been taught. This to me is mastery.
  8. today- Worked over passing open guard to knee in, then collar choke. 45 min free roll.
  9. Hey, and welcome aboard KF! As to the belt thing, there's a FAQ (accessed at the top of the page) that has a run down on it. Glad you're here.
  10. That's the argument I usually hear about such discussions, unknown. And it's not without merit, but one has to take a look at why they are doing a certain art. If your goal is effective self defense, as mine usually has been, then it's difficult to say that 30 years of practice is efficient use of time. Conflict can and will happen NOW. Therefore, it's a good idea to look at what you can effectively make work now. This doesnt' mean that if your goals aren't sd, that working 30 yrs on something isn't worthwhile, it's about what you need out of what you do. It doesnt' even mean that you can't work on stuff that is accessory in nature for 30 if you're doing sd, but you'd best not put all your eggs in that basket. just my view.
  11. today- Drilled over takedowns/pummeling followed by rounds of escape/ hold mount, side, guard, and half guard. 4, 5 min rounds of free roll to close out.
  12. Lifting the heel allows for hip rotation and a more natural, athletic posture. This aligns everything in a posture that allows for contact follow thourgh and penetration. Additionally, it shifts your weight forward a hair into a more aggressive posture. Futher, it will automatically bend the knees. This will give you that athletic posture that will be useful for movement and powerful strikes. Lifting the heel is actually a must for us.
  13. Welcome aboard! Nice to see another midwesterner.
  14. Yes, I think it's an important componant of any system. And honesty is important. This is where armored attackers come in very use. They, fo course, have to give you a good energy.
  15. To build up functional strength for most ma activities also consider doing pull up work on gymnast rings, same on push ups, ect. It makes the forarm adjust to the changes in motion. Consider doing pull ups while gripping a belt and rope climbing as well. Think about cross training efforts such as rock climbing as well. A trip to the rock or an artifical gym can be a plesant change in strength training and also works on your goal.
  16. yesterday- BJJ nite: Drilled over work from closed guard to open using a collar tie. Moved to arm bar. Worked rounds of each. 20 min free roll to close.
  17. today- 2.5 mile run abs bis/tris Good to be home and in a routine again. However, I am missing the mountain views.
