  1. Welcome aboard KF! What is your assessment of the Gracie games DVD series. I've been considering getting it for my kids but keep cringing at the price tag. Worth it?

  5. I get what you're saying about no other option. That's a tough bind. That being said, I'm not a huge fan of using online stuff as a primary mode of learning. BJJ is a game of inches and tiny angles. There's just no way to duplicate the technical level of learning you need on a computer screen. Also, no matter how good the material you're watching, you need mat time to work it out live. That's the critical test. You and a friend aren't going to have the variety of energy availiable to you to really apply it widely. That being said, I think technology does have a place in training as bushidoman said ealier. I think as a supplimental source, stuff like this really does have a place. Having seen some of the Graice vids, I'd say they are pretty quality stuff. THe shortcoming of no hands on instructor still remains, however. He's the one that makes sure all those reps you are doing are GOOD reps that instill good habits. I also think that video comes more into play the more you've been in practice. When you're really new, it's easy to get side traced with the newest super move from Brazil rather than focus on the fundimental of the art, which is where the magic is. Is there any way you could set up some sort of private work with the gym that's nearest, I know 100 miles is pretty steep. But, a once a month trip for an hour of private and an hour of open mat will pay some pretty good dividends. Then you've got something to put your video into context with. Just my thoughts. However, if you're going to do the online course, the Gracies have a pretty good product it seems. I'd buy less into the hype of ranking via this method, which is where most of the debate is over and focus onjust learning the movements.
  6. today- BJJ nite: Drilled armbar/hip drills from guard. Moved into open guard pass to knee in followed by moving to mount. Last, transition to side after escape effort. Nice flow series. 60 min free roll.
  7. Yes, range time is always good time. Let me know what you think of the gen 4's. I'm not a huge Glock fan, but it's certainly not because they aren't good firearms. I think their record speaks for itself. I just don't like the grip angle, it's based off the Luger and it just doesn't line up for me and the grips are a bit wide for my hand. I like teh government model design and recently went from a Springfield to Kimber. GREAT trigger and the best mortage payment you'll ever make. today- 3 mile run back/bis abs
  8. today- BJJ: Worked more spider guard variants to triangle, sweeps. Free roll for 40 min
  9. today- More range time. Which is never bad. Less live fire and more lees than lethal munitions, ect.
  10. today- shoot day: 400 rounds + of pistol 300 + of rifle movement, cover, positional shooting, target discernment, ect. Great day.
  11. today- am: 30-20-10 circuit of medicine ball thorws thrusters abs pm: BJJ nite: Went over cross guard to triangle then sweep. Fininshed technique with guard drills. 40 min free roll
  12. today- 3 mile run crossfit workout 25-20-25-10-5 reps of box jumps followed by sit ups circuit with weights
  13. today- BJJ: Drilled guard recovery into omo plata, followed by omo plata defense. Move on to single leg omo counter followed by an omo sweep. Free roll for 40
  14. yesterday- Visited a BJJ school out here in Iowa where I'm training. Drilled over side to mount then drilledl live. 40 min free roll today- After swinging breaching tools all morning I'm taking the day off
  15. To build on that last thought, I'd schedule some sort of cross training goal that is signifigant in nature. One that will test you mentally and physically but might be unrealted to ma's. Preferably one that will require you to train specifically for it for a time and mentally push thru not only the training but the event itself. Personally, I use moutian climbing to test where my head is. How much I've gained or lost in the ability to perserve and win. It's an undertaking that can't be done without sufficient reserves of strenght, endurance and will. It doesn't have to be a vertical death trap, but something that will push your abilities. Think scrambles if it's your first time. That's just me though. I've heard of running events, adventure races, triathalons, ect. all being used for the same thing. It's more about training your mindset that working on your skill set. Forrest Morgan has a section in his book, "Living the Martial Way" on this sort of thing. I can't quote the section right now, I'm away from home. It might be worth looking at for ideas. On another note, perhaps taking a side training jaunt into a RBSD system for a bit might help. Not technically with what you're doing, but with the mindset that a good practitioner will bring to the table. Maybe a combative oriented system even for a bit. Alternitively, you might think about a shooting school or something along those lines. Most, those that are worth their weight anyway, will talk extenively about mindset. Anyway, just suggestions.
  16. Ditto on Paladin Press. Some stuff I like is by OTM. Proforce makes some good economical stuff Of course Fairfex is solid as it gets.
