  1. I remember those days...barely...but I remember them. Don't you just love Pinan Yondan...I LOVE IT STILL!! Sounds to me that your Sensei is really PROUD of you....and he should be!!
  2. To everyone... Thank you for your many kind words; they mean everything to Nathan and our family. The Owasso Rams are Area Champions!! They're now in the State Championship Round held at the ORU Maybee Center. They won game 1 with a score of 77-55. Tonights game, 03/08/13, is game #2; this is the first time in 80 years that the Owasso Rams have made it to round #2. If they win tonight, they'll play for the State Championship....GO RAMS!! That night for Nathan appears to be the only game that he'll play; it appears that is was a one time only thing. Even though the coach told the Tulsa World and myself that "...he might play, we'll see." Nathan wants to play just one more time, but I don't see it happening because wins and losses are the job of the coach to protect. However, Nathan could've played for the same amount of time as that night last night because they won by 22 points. I can see it in Nathan's eyes..."Please let me play just one more time", although this is more like the wish of a very proud dad! GO RAMS!!
  3. Congrats and well deserved. Feels good huh?
  4. Oh I won't teach every student alone !!! Like private lessons. Ill teach in groups. The ppl I train now their are maybe 15 of them ? Give or take. The method is like this. Stretch, warm up all together. Then we use go over 2 techniques in an hour. Whether its a sweep, pass, submissions, transitions, or whatever I will demonstrate with my highest level student then the whole group watches and does it. If they have any questions or concern they ask. That's about it. I think what he's asking is how where will you fit in the time slots for all these classes? Will you be holding four or five adult classes a day in addition to kids' classes? But I'd be doing most of the classes. But not all cuz I'm only human right. I am not doing an adults class/advanced class when I start. I will only determine that after I see the numbers I have. I know not everyone will be satisfied with those hours that's why I'd ask everyone what would be suitable for them. A lot of ppl want me to open up the school because they "like" my style. And the way I teach works, a girl used my techniques when someone tried to rape her. She used some Gracie Jiu-Jitsu techniques I showed her and I was so flattered. So that was a big confidence booster, big confidence booster for the girl that performed those techniques in a self Defense situation also. So proud of her The problem that I see with the class structures is that there is no break between classes in order to end/begin any said class. I.e...7pm to 8pm and then 8pm to 9pm. This leaves the following classes to start late, and in late, students aren't getting the full time as posted. "Being on time is to be early, and to be on time is to be late!!" Students are to class early so as to not be late, but when you don't allow small moments between classes, that presents a problem. This truly presents a problem if all classes occupy the very same space. If you have two spaces, then your class schedules are fine. Here's an example of what I've done forever: 8pm-9pm 915pm-1015pm 1030pm-1130pm This now allows 15 minutes for one class to end on time and the following classes to start on time. Business 101 states that when people are scheduled to be at work, for example, at 10, they get therejust early enough to clock in on time. Then they go to the restroom, fix their hair, fix their clothes, etc...THEN they're ready to start. Add all of the time getting to ready for work in the restroom is known as "stealing time". A dojo, for example is no exception to the rule. However, adding in that 15 minutes allows students and YOU to "get ready for class". You can use that time to answer questions/concerns, go to the restroom, and to spent time with students just coming to class as well as those just leaving class. It's your 15 minutes, so use it smartly. The above example adds 30 minutes to YOUR time, but it's time that is critical and vitally important to you as well as to your students.
  5. Welcome to KF!! Solid post!! I'd just add that the Chief Instructor and/or one the the senior BB's be present while the JBB is leading the class because it adds validity to the JBB. Any incorrect actions by the JBB are corrected by the senior BB and/or the CI in a very professional manner as to not deflat the JBB's enthusiam for teaching. When a student is under the teaching of a JBB, any and all questions by the students during said class are immediately re-directed back to the JBB. The CI and/or the senior BB's aren't there to undermine the JBB; support wholeheartedly across the board.
  6. Intensity will change from style to style and from sensei to sensei. But for the most, you're assumption is pretty close generally speaking.
  7. Congrats and well deserved!! Just think, you're half way to Shodan!!
  8. I use to carry one but I only did way back when it first came out because I thought, and still do, it was an effective weapon. It fit in great with our brand of Tuite. I stopped carrying it around because I just hate things on my keychain other than keys.
  9. Welcome to KF!!!!!!!!
  10. Imho, private lessons are a win win for the practitioner because there's so much more one on one; undivided attention is critical.
  11. Solid post!!
  12. Some great video's...thanks for sharing them with us!!
  13. How did the tourney go Brian?? I'm sure Kendall did GREAT...as always!!
  14. WOW WOW WOW!! Congrats and very well deserved!! Feels great huh?
  15. Yes...and a few boo boo's to learn from him will be worth it, imho, and the boo boo's won't hurt...for long!!
  16. Hey, there are a couple of good Judo schools where you live as well! But yes, there is an absolutely OVERWHELMING amount of TKD here. And I'm sorry to say, most of it I have experienced is drivel. You're absolutely right...I sometime forget about that. Sorry!!
  17. Great topic!! I learned TKD for about 1 year back in the early 1970's when I was a JBB in Shindokan. I was a very active weekend warrior back then and I was tired of having the TKD practitioners at these open tourneys handing me my own rear-end with their fancy and effective kicks. Shindokan only kicks waist down!! So, what better way for me to learn how to counter these kicks was to learn the methodology of these TKD kicks. My only criteria was to learn the kicks of TKD; to add the effectiveness of TKD into Shindokan for my own useages. Adding the TKD kicks into my arsenal added quite a lot at tourneys as well as in the "streets"; not many Shindokanists use TKD kicks. I did Shindokan under Dai-Soke Yoshinobu Takahashi AND TKD under Grandmaster Young Ik Suh at the same time. The learning of the two at the same time had no ill-effects on me in either of the arts. After that one year with TKD, I've devoted my entire MA life in Shindokan, however, I've cross-trained unofficially for well over 3 decades exchanging with many, many MA styles and not for rank; pure knowledge was sought for.
  18. Very interesting stuff there Justice...thanks for sharing it!!
  19. Solid post!! Welcome to KarateForums!!
  20. Wankan for me. Unsu use to be side by side with Wankan until my age/right knee finally caught up to me.
  21. What does letting go mean exactly? I think I'll always go to my instructor for guidance even when I'm not seeing him day-to-day. Letting go here means about the same thing as when a parent(s) lets their child/children go; leaving the house on their own. Life must be experienced because life is an experience.
