  1. Welcome to KF!!!!!!!!

  4. Solid post!! A mouthpiece is just as, if not even more, important than any kumite gear one might/must wear. I had a student once who couldn't wear a mouthpiece because it caused him to gag. After all we tried, he dropped out; by his own choice.
  5. Our Hombu has, and will summarily suspend rank if proven actions are warranted. The suspension, however summarily, will occur only and after the Hombu has committed its judgement via official entries in the appropriate documents and the like. Once the PIP (Personal Improvement Plan) is successfully completed, usually 9 months with reviews every 3 months, said previous rank will be reinstated immediately. The PIP consists of three stages and one must successfully pass phase 1 before one can enter into phase 2 and so on. Failure of any PIP phase constitutes permanent demotion, to be determined by the Hombu, usually to the rank just below. Strip me of my rank and title, guess what? Knowledge can't be erased...ever!! In the dark history of our Hombu, we've stripped title and authority of our San Dai-Soke for his many deplorable actions. So much so that he was expunged. Even as I type this, he's attempting to rejoin the Hombu and back to his "rightful" position(s); an attempt that will not be granted, I assure you of that. My most senior student was suspended and demoted by the Hombu for lying on an official document. I was suspended once by Dai-Soke when I was a JBB for being in his office without permission and for wearing his ceremonial obi.
  6. Ours is intent; we practice hojo undo before, during, and after class. Everything is dependent on ones conditioning across the board, and in that, hojo undo in deeply intertwined with our every coming and going. Because we do hojo undo so much, I'd say it's 50%.
  7. If any instructor out of the Hombu and/or my own dojo acted and demanded that way...they'd be called on the carpet, and if they did that again...they'd no longer be teaching at either of the aforementioned locations.
  8. Solid post!! While the kyu/dan system is mostly everywhere, I believe that what Kano created was a good thing in both content and context. But over the many years, I believe that the kyu/dan system has been, imho, cheapened over the years by those whose intents are far less scrupulous.
  9. Both our Soke and Dai-Soke required everyone to call them by their official titles but that was only during any formal gatherings; to me, this isn't ego, it's formality and nothing more.
  10. No matter the rank; respect begets respect. Just as rank is earned, so is respect. The respect showed to our fellow MAists isn't taken, no, it's earned on and off the floor. Had my Dai-Soke ever demanded my respect, I would've made it to the door the very same day that I showed up. I respect him because I love him and I love him because of who HE was and not because of he adored his rank/title. I put my pants on and off one foot at a time! I'm nothing special; I'm just me. My rank/title doesn't define me, and in that, I define my rank/title by treating everyone honorable across the board.
  11. Switched...no! Dabbled...yes. I find many effective things within many of the kung-fu styles.
  12. Very well done video and very informative. So much so that I didn't mind reading the close caption at all. Thanks for sharing it. I loved the dummy work; it's what we train with and we're karate.
  13. Imho... For self-defense to be effective, one must first understand that compliant drills give it the illusion of effectiveness when demonstrated. I value self-defense, but only after the illusions have been removed permanently.
  14. What ever works at the moment!! I'm not dependent as to what would be my favorite, and this includes, but isn't limited to Shindokan. I'm equal in my favorites.
  15. You're right...this will not be an easy endeavor, but quite doable. However, the one thing I learnt a long time ago was this. GET HELP!! Get help because there are so many things that must be addressed leading up to and after the event. So many so that a loose end, just one, can unravel the entire thing. The founder of Dell Computers, Mike Dell, knew that he couldn't do it all by himself. So what did he do? He surrounded himself with experts in the fields that he knew nothing about. He knew computers; nothing else. You won't have to find an army, even though you might wish that you had. List everything needed, and then put a check mark next to those that you can do. Then make sure that you don't over fill your plate. GET HELP and GET HELP SOON!! You'll want to do it all, but it's a lot for one person to tackle. You'll have to trust others and you'll have to let them do what they do the best. If possible, get your help to volunteer their time and all, or make an offer of payment of their service off the door or none if the event flops. Advertisements, rent, insurance, and the list will go on and on. Hotel rooms, and food/catering, and the list still goes on and on. The bigger the event, the more HELP you're going to have to get. You can do it by yourself, but it's a task beyond one person imho. You'll have one chance to make an impression, so make it a good and favorable one!! Good luck with it!!
  16. What does it say about a school when it has an abundance of black belts but very, very, very few kyu ranks? To me, it speaks about the intolerance towards the kyu ranks.
  17. After all, we're just laypersons training/teaching the MA. Did the MA you train in find you or did you find the MA?
  18. Yes Yes Yes Yes!! Solid new favorite quote!!
  19. I hope that you'll enjoy this little tribute to my son...Nathan Mitcham. He's an 18 year old special needs adult who was able to live out his dream...To dress out and play for his high school basketball team, The Owasso Rams. It was quite an emotional week leading up to the Tuesday game against Sand Springs, OK Sandites on 02/13/2013. It was quite an emotional night...last night, and the emotions have overwhelmed me beyond any capacity that I can muster. I could tell you about this story, however, I've not the vocabulary nor the skill to properly tell this amazing story how my son lived his dream. So, for now, I'll let others tell Nathan's story. While at each link, you'll see other links embedded within these links that might help you fully experience Nathan's journey. You might also need to do some of your own searches to learn more because I'm sure I'm not fully aware of everything that's available. So here we go... http://www.facebook.com/Dressnathanout?fref=ts **The second link on the above link is one of two articles that were written by Tulsa World's John E. Hoover World Sports Columnist** http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/article.aspx?subjectid=708&articleid=20130213_29_B1_CUTLIN502311 **This is the second of two articles written by Tulsa World's John E. Hoover World Sports Columnist. There's a slideshow and a video included** http://www.ktul.com/story/21141916/dressnathanout-was-a-huge-success http://www.kjrh.com/dpp/news/local_news/owasso/Twitter-campaign-a-success-for-Owasso-High-School-basketball-team-manager-Nathan-Mitcham My wife and I have recorded just about every news show on our DVR about Nathan dressing out, ever since it began last week. You can imagine just how much Nathan's Facebook/Twitter and the like have increased over the past week, but even more so since the game last night. If you "friend" him at Nathan Robert Mitcham, you can see quite a lot of pics/video's as well. I'd include them here, but, I'm not computer smart and I've no idea how. My thanks go out to each and everyone who has made Nathan's dream come true. Allowing Nathan to dress out and to allow him to play validated many, many things within his life. Even more so, it's validated within Nathan that he can hoop...he's got game. It was validated when he stepped onto the floor in an official high school basketball game...PROOF IS ON THE FLOOR!! I never truly realized the impact until last night. Channel 6, Fox Channel, Channel 8 and Channel 2, all from Tulsa, OK were there. Cars were everywhere; I had to "make" a parking spot near the gym because cars were everywhere, and I mean everywhere. His 8 points and everything else he did during last nights game will be forever recorded. I don't even know what he's feeling today, but I know this... I LOVE YOU NATHAN...I'M SO VERY PROUD OF YOU...YOUR MOM IS VERY PROUD OF YOU...YOUR SISTER IS VERY PROUD OF YOU!! GO NATHAN!!
  20. My question simply implied that I was unsure exactly what he offered. Does he offer full-training, or am I going to go for one class, learn some techniques, and that's it? Since my Shotokan dojo was from white to black, I was unsure what made his teaching style different. Will I still progress like that? It's hard to say. You're going to have to ask the source; that'll void any and all concerns.
  21. No!! Schedule won't allow it.
  22. 1st Place in Kata; CONGRATS...and well deserved!! Nice looking trophy!!
  23. First of all, I'd like to welcome you to KarateForums!! Imho... Take him at his offer. The only thing you'll lose is the time it'll take for the evaluation and the like. As far as on-line VS at the dojo, I'm a firm believer that nothing's better than live training at the dojo and that's because immediate feedback is tantamount in ones training. Do what you feel is right for you...live or on-line. Good luck and please let us know how the evaluation went!!
  24. For Kids...Does your style use a "Junior" black belt?
  25. My prayers and condolences heartfully go out to her immediate family as well as to her followers/students and friends including the entire Judo family world wide. Find peace!!
