  1. I wouldn't react or reply!! Why? Those who don't truly understand the MA, imho, just say the darnest things, from time to time.
  2. Was Dai-Soke correct in what he's told us, iyho? What Royce did to Kimo at 6:12 from this link describes how to work while in the turtle....
  3. I don't think that your dojo is broken. One the contrary, it could be just the evolution of the dojo; change is inevitable and this is just a needed change that is needed.
  4. This is me looking from the outside, and forgive me for that. But, I'd like to see the application of each movement within the 5th Dan form...ATA 5th dan Poomsae, Chung Hae. Some of the combinations seemed to have no correlation to one another, and I admit, that with me looking in from the outside, I was confused. I suppose that's the beauty of the MA being made up of different styles of the MA. What I'm use to DOESN'T have to be the same in another. I also suppose that I've been down the Shindokan path so long that I demand some effective applications. Please set me straight because I need to be set straight, especially if I'm wearing Shindokan blinders where I can only see that and not the beauty of Chung Hae.
  5. WOW!! An amazing article that bears to be read by any reader that's interested in exactly what is and what isn't on the subject you three are covering. Or for a reader who is facing that very same thing in their life or in someone else's life that their close to. In this, imho, I hope that any LEO would do what they've been sworn to do...Protect and Serve. And that means to go to every call with the professionalism required as though it's the first time to the call. It's not a waste of time to arrive to the call as soon as possible, and to not assume anything of the RP's call history. Imho, it's not the waste of time to Protect and Serve. I would, again, like to thank you, Patrick, Brian, and Alex for taking the time to do a top notch article that is very educational, and therefore, helpful. Thank you...thank you...thank you!!
  6. Curiosity killed the cat. And in this case, imho, the cat here is the readers that have to know why this book is how Walmart decided across the board. Like sex and violence sells this and that, so does the need to know the "why" of a book, in this case.
  7. I wholeheartedly concur!! In BJJ, is it a good thing or a bad thing to be always moving? I ask that because we're taught that it's a bad thing to always be moving for the simple reason that... "Each time you move, you open up other possibilities to your opponent to capitalize upon; don't be moving just to be moving: have consciousness while moving" ~Dai-Soke I'd say its always good to be moving, but you have to move with purposes. Like fighting on your feet, if you stop moving, you become a statue for someone to spool up on. Especially if you are trying to improve position, which is paramount. Once you obtain a position of dominance, the other person will likely try to move out of it, so you have to move to keep position.I agree! After all, move this way or that way with no rhyme or reason, you might work right into a rear naked choke hold, or one of the other fun submissions...fun for your opponent, but not for yourself.
  8. True, you may not hit the point, but striking the arm in that manner will surely remove it as an obstruction, opening the path to send your strike home. Getting pain off the strike is just bonus coverage. That's absolutely correct. After all, you only need to open up enough space in order to reach the target with whichever hand/foot/etc. that you desire.
  9. Welcome to KF; glad that you're here!! Interesting topic/question. I took my Panther videos, I didn't have many, and had a company transfer them to DVD. Because as old as the Panther stuff was, I was afraid that the tape would break, and after you splice tape back together, after awhile, content is lost. I've not purchased any Panther from Century because I don't want a VHS of anything; to fragile to survive age, imho.
  10. Solid post!! As confusing as this might appear to be, I'd enjoy the semi-private lessons atmosphere!! Train on, and train hard!!
  11. While I appreciate your support, I made this topic to speak towards how to deescalate a situation similar to mine. What, if you were in my shoes that day, what would you have done differently to deescalate him/the situation?? Deescalate skills are, imho, an overlooked portion of the MA. We learn how to defend ourselves and others, but we don't adequately address how to deescalate. The answer isn't always found in our hands and feet, if you get my drift. I deescalated him by not being that MA force. Yes, I stood between him and his wife, but, I stayed calm while he was loud and threatening. At every threat spewed from his mouth, I simply said..."No!"..."Relax!"..."Please calm down!"..."I understand!"..."Please, lets, you and I sit down for a minute, first!"...things like that, but my voice remained calm and low and reassuring. Yeah, I made myself as big as I could. Which wasn't a stretch, but I believe you understand what I'm saying. My stance, however it was, was ready! My hands, however I held them, were unthreatening! My demeanor, however it was construed, was calm! Was I ready to unleash hell on him, if need be? Yes! But, in reality, he wasn't a threat to me, and I always side to deescalate the situation at all measures before physicality is necessary. He was a threat to others at the party, but what also helped to deescalate the matter was it was him versus 9 determined men set to protect whomever; 9 vs 1 speaks in volumes. The other men said nothing to disturb what I was slowly deescalating. Any other added voice to mine might've undermined any advantage or any reasoning from reaching him. But until the other men got beside me, it was me and him, alone, one on one, and I chose to deescalate him, and would've have continued to do so until physicality was necessary. Back to the bold type above...I await your answer, and allow us to discuss de-escalation ideas together!!
  12. I actually think the opposite is true. Ronda's popularity has crossed into the mainstream, and there are lots of people who know who she is but don't follow fighting. She's gained that kind of notoriety.I think she is one of the most-searched topics on Google, as well, so she has some drawing power. I do think it odd that Walmart won't carry her book in stores, but will sell it through their website. It doesn't make sense. Nor does it make sense that they refer to her as "too violent," but sell the Game of Thrones DVD series, which, if they follow the books well, and I understand they do, are quite a bit more violent than any of Ronda's fights. I think it smacks of hypocrisy on Walmart's part. Either way, I don't think it will affect her book sales that much. Solid post!!
  13. Boxing training for Kung-Fu? Why not!! More than that, it's quite important. Imho, a well rounded MAist needs to also train in... Boxing Wrestling/Judo/BJJ ...besides ones core style; getting to a more well rounded knowledge. In a fight, sometimes during the fight, you're going to either punch or you're going to end up on the ground. The prepared mind!! So, Kung-Fu, as your core style, mixed in with some boxing and some grappling...man oh man...sky's the limits!!
  14. An old adage says... "You can have to much of a good thing", or something like that. A balance must be reached, and while improving the betterment of a MAist is a good thing, but too much of a good thing unbalances the betterment of the MAists body.
  15. Perfect time to practice your kicks!! This will give your poor elbow some resting time. Hang in there!!

Also, if I may suggest, find the pauses, they're there, because there's not many, if any kata's that are non-stop from start to finish. Accentuate the pauses! Ok...I'll go back to my corner!!
  17. Solid post!!
  18. I wholeheartedly concur!! In BJJ, is it a good thing or a bad thing to be always moving? I ask that because we're taught that it's a bad thing to always be moving for the simple reason that... "Each time you move, you open up other possibilities to your opponent to capitalize upon; don't be moving just to be moving: have consciousness while moving" ~Dai-Soke
  19. Nice tutorial; as always!! The thing about the pressure point, is that it's also not a guarantee for a varied reasons. Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained!!
  20. Any construed advantage/disadvantage is up to that person. Some might be effected by facing a left-hander AT FIRST, but, a MAist should have the abilities to quickly set that aside and forge forward with the task at hand. After all, any punch is just a punch! Any strike is just a strike! Any block is just a block! Any kick is just a kick! Address the technique(s) as they occur! Counter striking has no reverence to whether the opponent is left or right dominate; counter strike accordingly without the regards as to how/where it's coming from, left or right. because whatever the technique(s) are and whatever the side of the body they are coming from, understand this, they're going to be coming at you one way or another. Be prepared or be defeated!! Disregard any notions other than any techniques executed by an opponent who is left handed is different, but only for a noted moment; a quick moment!! Adapt!! Overcome!! If you've any left handed people in the school, and left handed people affect you on the floor, well, spar them until any notions are erased; the sooner the better. Mizu No Kokoro AND Tsuki No Kokoro! Understand them and practice them because a left hander is just that, a left hander and it's nothing else to be overly concerned with. And when one is overly concerned with something, the fight is quickly over. "Whoa...that's different!"....then, it's back to the business at hand: defending yourself!! Any disturbances with an opponent because they're affected by any thing abnormal will be manipulated quickly because it can be construed as a weakness, and weaknesses can be taken advantage of, especially in a lesser experienced MAist. Imho!
  21. There were 8 other men still there; 2 are bouncers, 3 are construction workers, 1 a truck driver, 1 an executive, and 1 a CEO, and none of them are small men...4 of them are taller than me, and I'm 6'1". I believed then, and I still believe now, that my niece was well protected. Had that not been so, I would've stayed and got a ride home much later. That's me!! All of these men came to back me up when the anger drunk husband was stopped/confronted by myself. And of course, everyone, including the drunk husband knows my MA background quite well. I was only able to position myself so quickly because of where I was standing and where the argument escalated...3-4 steps to my left. The other men were standing around the BBQ, which was over 50 feet away straight ahead of me. As far as the drunk husband driving away, well, we tried to stop him, but before we could do truly anything about it, he was peeling out. His car keys were in his pocket, and his car wasn't blocked in. My sister called the police and gave info, including license plate number and car and husband description. Our niece didn't want us to make an official report, and had my sister refuse a patrol car to come to the house. The "why'd you leave?" verbal attacks was more because I left the party, and not what had just occurred. And, these came from the women, not the men!!

Yeah, BB or not, floor etiquette ALWAYS!! Fast way to get into the sights of the CI quick!!
  23. I always thought that Judo/BJJ gi tops were tougher than though. Although, doing BJJ isn't kind to gi's seeing that you're on the mat all the time rolling; things tend to wear out faster, I suppose!

Nice!! If you're style is Okinawa based, and Issinryu is, then I believe that your horse stance is fine. I would like to see your back more straight and that your knee's would bend more in order to keep your back more straight. This might help your horse stance!! That's me! What your Sensei says, goes and overrules me totally and completely!! As far as the re-grabbing goes, it's natural to do so that you're not constantly tensed after said technique, but it's learning to know how to re-grab so that it's not so noticeable to your opponent. Said Kata has moments where your hand opens up, and I believe that this was to relieve you having your fist closed throughout the Kata. Also, your gi sleeve is getting in the way of many things; might roll them up. Imho!! Here's a BB, for comparison... http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=isshinryu&FORM=VIRE3#view=detail&mid=032FE30535FB928ABDB2032FE30535FB928ABDB2
