Judodad_karateson Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 What your thoughts on getting shin guards that will accommodate gi pants? I want to get these but I'm worried they won't go over the pants. Have you ever worn guards under you pants? Do you prefer them over or under, and why?Note, I'm asking for sparring purposes, not tournaments.
Kanku65 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 I've used something similar. Only during outside of dojo sparring with friends.I wore them under a pair of skinny style sweatpants nicely. Fitting them under a normal loose gi should be no problem at all.I preferred wearing them under because they gripped my leg hair and skin nicely so they didn't like, slide around and stuff. lol. They didn't really pinch though. Just held better to my skin than to my pants. To search for the old is to understand the new.The old, the new, this is a matter of time.In all things man must have a clear mind. And from the picture in the link, I believe that they'd fit fine over gi pants; appears they have Velcro that wraps around the leg, but I really couldn't tell one way or another.I will only wear guards under the gi pants because, for me, wearing them over the gi pants tends to restrict my movements one way or another; feels like the gi pants are grabbing me as well. **Proof is on the floor!!!
Spodo Komodo Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 I wear these Tokaido shin & instep guards under my gi without a problem. I have also worn them over my gi where that is the preferred manner. They slide nicely under the fabric so you don't really get any tightening of the pants over the knee when kicking, if you wear them on the outside then you need to draw enough material over the top to allow the knee to bend properly which then creates a toe-trap for your opponent. Personally I think under is safer but I can see the reason why someone might want all safety equipment visible to the instructors.
JR 137 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 I've never worn shin/instep guards, but if I did, I'd never wear them over the pants. Seems like there'd be too much material to get all bunched up and do too many things like restrict movement, cause blisters (like a wrinkled sock in a shoe), etc.ive only seen those type of guards worn either with shorts or under the pants. Everyone I've trained with that wore guards wore the cloth ones under the pants.I could be living in a bubble though.
Bulltahr Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Everyone I've trained with that wore guards wore the cloth ones under the pants. There's a few guys that use these in our dojo, but they have to be reminded to wash the bloody things, they get pretty rank, pretty quick if they do not. Nidan Melbourne Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 We wear our shin guards underneath our Gi pants. Some students at my dojo wear them over the top of the pants
liger Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 The pair I have works perfectly underneath gi pants. I would recommend these to all new students personally.I did a tournament kumite were we did muwashi geri at the same time. My leg hurt for a week. Shortly after went and bought shin guards and have worn them under my gi for any time we do free style sparing.
