Who is Karateka?

Featured Replies

What do you think makes a person true karateka? Maybe a lot of martial experience? Peace in mind? A typical guy who goes and trains couple times a week?....

I think anyone who studies karate is a karateka, from the first day they set foot on the mat until they choose to end their training. Nothing else necessary.

First time in this forum in a long, long time. I agree with the above...anybody that practices karate is considered a karateka imo.

Student since January 1975---4th Dan, retired due to non-martial arts related injuries.

I agree with Lupin1 here. A Karateka is a person who studies karate. As far as attitude and discipline go, that's another concept in and of itself. I like the put that under the term of Martial Artist and has to do with how one holds themselves, their attitude, and other factors.

Martial arts training is 30% classroom training, 70% solo training.

I think what you're asking here, is what makes a GOOD Karateka, which IMO is a much different story to putting your suit on and stepping on a mat, which is what makes any Karateka.

I think a GOOD Karateka is passionate, driven, self motivated and above all, always willing to learn and improve =]

I saw the question like you. I'll add that a karateka is someone dedicated to keep training even when their body is tired. To keep training and push their limits. As well, someone who is humble enough to not allow themselves to be provoked into violence.
