I have a belief that jump roping is one of the weakest cardio excersices. I don't see how it is anymore beneficial than jumping jacks. I don't see how jump roping can be an effective cardio workout(compared to swimming and running, etc), yet I hear of many people practicing it. So tell me, is it or is it not an effective cardio workout?

jump roping is actually one of the most effective. how fast are you jumping? do you vary your footwork, or just jump up and down like a robot?

virtually every pro fighter in existence gets their cardio from running and jumping rope...

I do it, and would reccomend it to anyone.

I have been using Skipping or jump rope as my core Anerobic Exercise, I do 10 x 3 minute rounds with 5 pound leg weights,

I started this like 2 months ago, I finaly went for a 5km run and i did it so easy.

I will say skipping , jumping rope is the best form of Cardo there is Plus the extra benifits that you also recieve...

I do 30 second intervial in my 3 minutes so 6 different skipping foot works.

It's excellent for cardio. Look at it this way. You are jumping, using your quads, hams and calves each time you spring. You are moving your arms and shoulders. You are moving continuously. This is an all-out body effort. Of course, if you jump rope and can't do more than 10-20 jumps per session and you are constantly stopping, you're not doing as much for you as a continuous session. Try alternating legs, double jumps, cross arms, etc. Do that for 20-30 minutes straight with only a few second pauses in between. You'll be soaked in sweat. That's good cardio.

it's too freakin' cold in Colorado to run outside now :'( I should start jump-roping again.

It is really good to speed up your foot work too!

Yes I agree it's a good exercise for the cardio and it's good also for coordination and syncronization

Fortunately, I live in Northglenn, where we have an excellent system of trails. The caveat is that the only time I have to run is at about 0530 in the morning. I'm sure I looke vaguely eskimo-like whilst doing so! :D

Compared to Baltimore, where the humidity was pretty much oppressive from March through December, I will put up with the cold and dry!
