  1. My friend, here in the US just started Judo with his college classes. He has been coming over to my house after classes so we can enthusiastically tell each other what we've learned in our arts. He really loves it so far, and I wouldn't actually mind finding the time to take some classes before I graduate high school, if I do go to college Im for sure taking the Judo classes/clubs. Anyways, I'm sure its different there than it is here, if not for location than only because its a different school, but I know that my friend's first three weeks of Judo Classes were hard conditioning classes, they didn't even touch on the basics except excises and stretches, shortly after that they started to learn some of the basic ground work, a few basic throws and now some of the arm bars are being worked in to it, he just had his first sparing last week I believe, and he loves its. So from what I know if most schools do the conditioning time, then expect the first few weeks to be pretty rough work, he actually enjoyed how much good it did him though once it was all over.
  2. That's gotta be one of the best jokes I've came p with in a while, I can just picture some one walking in to a public bathroom to see a guy standing there in front stance...
  3. You know your obsessed with Martial Art's when you practice Front stance while using the urinal.. Not that I've ever done that.. at all
  4. Had my second Class today, I "tested" for my Shotokan patch to ad to my Gi and passed almost word for word. All it was a sheet we went over before class about the opening and closing class ceremony and the purpose of "True Karate-do" and the dojo Kun that had to be learned and then repeated when the Sensei asked the questions. I was kinda proud though, its nothing big or flashy just a small school patch that goes on our gi to show that we are part of the school and familiar with the "disciplines" of our school. Anyways We learned our first open hand block and our front stance today, we also had a really good/rough stretching warm up I was sweating before class even formally started from stretching alone. Since its a new adult class that only meets once a week, they also have given us permission to attend a second younger class on the Monday, this is the kids-"all ages" class that existed before they did the new adult class, since theres only three of us in the class and the other two have children and are older their allowing them to come in from time to time for extra lessons to train with their kids making it a family thing, but they also extended the invitation to me so If I can work it out with my job I'll be able to attend two classes a week fro the price of one, when originally I was only going to get one class a week for my first 4-6 months... I'm really excited.
  5. I found Karate-do My Way of Life by the one and only Gichin Funakoshi to be a interesting and fun read, I really felt I better understood him as a person and what drove him to do so much for Karate through this book.
  6. actually I believe that eskrima is designed so that the moves can be translated and done empty handed easily, so it may be of some help.
  7. Aye, good luck to you on your path I hope you succeed and progress as far as you can. I had a lot of problems with my Outer to inner middle block (cant remember Japanese name yet) but I've been working on it since I got home I'm starting to remember the positioning now. I can't wait for my next lesson, I'm also really enjoying it so far.
  8. Thanks, and yes I'm going to try and get there earlier every time so i have plenty of time to extra stretching and warm up excises, I found warming up with the Sensei one on one enjoyable I did my thing and he did his, it was very relaxed and helped me get the nervousness out of my system.
  9. In stead of posting a new thread I'll just add on here. Had my first Shotokan class today, I enjoyed it a lot. We went over most of the basics and learn the flow of class with opening and closing class and all of that fun stuff. A lot of funny stories go with this though as we were praticing in a church gym. This weekend the day i cashed my check and the day before i was to finally sign up for class.. we had a lot of rain and the building attached to our Dojo (think old down town buildings) actually clasped in on its self, demolishing its self and soaking the Dojo and causing a gas leak. I was to heart broke to post the story the Sunday that it happened as I feared the school was done for. Anyways while thats being repaired we are meeting in a church gym. Me and two older middle-aged men one who happens to be a preacher and the Sensei of our class who is the main Senpai of the school. He is a year or so older than me and this was the first class he had ever taught with out Sensei Vernon there. Anyways the class has been moved to 3:30 and i did not know that fact so i thought class started at three. Excited and ready for my first day I got to the church early to make a good impression... early as in about 2:30... By 3:00 I was freaking out and disappointed because I thought either the Senpai had forgot or that i had the wrong day or something or who knows what?!! Anyways the Sensei/Senpai got there at about 3:10ish and everything worked out fine.
  10. ..I've been slacking off in my training since Friday, I worked to much this weekend i guess, however my first shotokan class is tomorrow at 3:00
  11. To be honest I'd rather see a Gundam live action movie. I always preferred the gundam series over any of the other "Giant mech" shows. However, I have to say I'm interested in and will probably see/love this movie.
  12. No what I'm simply saying is you asked how many people can carry a fan in a concealed location. I'm saying its possible for anyone with the intent of doing it. Considering most fans of this type I've ever seen in person are normally only a few inches longer than a butter fly knife. I would say that in all honesty putting a fan in your purse or in a pocket of your jacket isn't that hard.
  13. My Sensei and main Sempai at the school I'm joining this week are both devout Christians, as is most of the other people I've seen in the classes (being that i live in the bible belt). They two in question Sensei and Sempai are both very good at MA and it does not seem to get in the way of their faith.
  14. About as many as can carry a knife or a pair of brass knuckles
  15. I think not only martial artist but all "people" should see that as vile. Me personally I really try to hold my self to a higher standard because of my personal beliefs. I'm not religious but my life style and my way of thinking reflect my actions. As a budding/new martial artist, a "punk rocker", a "anarchist" (lets not get in to any political debates on this thread ), and most importantly as a human begin.
  16. Just wondering my friend, but how do you know?
  17. Their two ab exercises that I learned while at a trail lesson for another school. Thigh rubs are like crunches but you lay on your back with you knee bent pointing to the air, you lay your hands on the front of your legs and push/lean forward until the your hands reach your knees... After quite a few of them you really feel it. Beach Balls, are kind of like they sound you basically tuck your arms and neck in to your chest lay on your back (or sit on the ground to start) and then basically you roll in a ball from your lower back on the ground till you shoulders/upper back are on the ground then back up and back down. If that makes sense.. Thanks I wasn't exactly sure what to call the shoulder shrugs, my friend just showed it to me.
  18. 9-5-07 Started off with my stretching I really need to get limber so I've been trying to make myself do this more and more even though it really strains me to do it, I'm not pushing myself further than I should I'm just really not limber at all so its very uncomfortable. Spent a lot of time on the hand grips again today, even took them to school to do while taking notes. 75 thigh rubs 75 beach balls 15 push ups 15 knuckle push ups (back to back... those last six push ups were ROUGH) 20 Front snap kicks 20 Side kicks 20 reverse punches 20 curls on the bar bell 50 shoulder rolls with the bar bell? (not sure of the name for this exercise) 10 leg lifts 100 jumping jax (couldn't get out to run or jump rope it was raining) 10 more push ups Some more light stretching, and a few minutes of Mokuso to cool down.
  19. haha, straight or not that is STILL a lot of hard work. Alright I'll get on it..
  20. Congrats on getting down you material for you test, also was it 15 straight minutes of grappling? If so I'm extremely impressed me and my friend mess around from time to time and grappling wears me out really fast. I'm about to start on my nightly work out in a few minutes I'll post a log if I get the chance.
  21. Agreed, even though I'm 18 and just getting in to martial arts I have to say i would even hate for that to happen to myself. Pushing your self is one thing but theres a fine line of pushing your self and doing to much that adds up after years of abuse. I would hate to not be able to keep training at that age, and it would only be a shame if these kids ended up like that. All the hard work only to last until half way through your life... when it could last until the day you die. Sorry was rambling , i hope my post made sense.
  22. ah then you just have to be resourceful, instead of the two or three pound weights for jogging, and punching drills find some that is easy to hold but slightly heavy to offer resistance, maybe some canned food in each hand or a big book something? For a speed rope, its a simple as just finding a long enough piece of rope if you have a storage shed or anywhere that one might be laying around, put some tape on the end so it doesn't tear up your palm and go at it..
  23. Even though I haven't officially started my training yet, from what i have been to exposed to in my soon to be school, I really like using the Japanese terms. when I watch the class or go over the packet of information I was given and the sheet I'm expected to learn to earn my patch I really enjoy learning the new words and Terminology. It seems to give it a sense well idunno it just the feeling of the dojo that makes it very very appealing to me. Maybe I'm just a sucker for foreign culture and the "Traditional" thing really appeals to me?
  24. I was thinking the same thing bushido the kids are amazing martial artist and everything, and they seemed to enjoy it and not get injured... but at the same time they seem really young for this and i don't know how i feel about it. I have mixed emotions, but in the end I keep watching it because well I'm impressed.
