Interesting, another Cop story..

Whats the criteria for becoming a police officer in the US? It seem' s to me that everytime I watch CNN (which is not often) some triggerhappy racist thug wearing a badge is prosecuted for killing an afro american. Whats up with that? Always give a warning by the way... Try making a bow and say something gibberish (that sounds like japanese) It should put most people off -
Do blackbelts have a responsibility to....
superleeds replied to karatefox's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well the problem is (in the states atleast) that someone could be armed....now, running in to a situation like that would, ehmm, suck. -
As a student of the Japanese language, I agree with this totally. Most pronunciations in dojos are ridiculous, never mind the incorrect usage. I think if you can't say it correctly, stick to English. If one was to follow that line of argument, you might as well say that if you dont do the Karate techniques properly, you shouldn't do them at all. That you cant do something properly is not a reason to give it up, is it?

Why is Shotokan so unpopular ? Can it be used in real life ?
superleeds replied to goedikey's topic in Karate
I now it has been said before, but its all about what you put into your training. Shotokan has its good points and weak points just like any other martial art. If I was to say anything negative about shotokan it would be that their long stances apperantly is bad for your knees in the long run. I could be wrong offcourse.. -

Very interesting to say the least. It would have been very inspiering to train with Mr Morris. i especially like how mr morris finds the various connections of martial arts and put that together with a wast knowledge of figthing "knowhow" and alot of insight in how the human body works...

remind me not to piss u off if I ever meet u -
Not to piss anyone off,but I think that this is more of a problem in the U.S then say Europe. How students can promote their sensei is beyond me.
-
very few people has been given the rank 10th dan by the japanese karate federation/association what have u. those are the only valid 10th dan karatekas in my book.

we learned some kihon katas but they are not proper katas for some reason...with the kihons i would estimate that i learned 4 katas at my first semester..

Do you have to be approved by Japanese for Black Belt?
superleeds replied to Goju1's topic in Karate
It all depends. Our sensei is a fifth Dan and can promote people to 3rd Dan I think. But when sensei is getting his 6th dan rank he has to go to Japan. All BB get their certificates from japan though... -

What do you think of the obi (belt) grading system?
superleeds replied to Sasori_Te's topic in Karate
It's a nice point of referance in my opinion. Besides that, belts have no value really. I do in a way like the old okinawan system better than Funakoshi sensei's. -
There are atleast 250 styles of karate only on okinawa....most are derivations of course, good luck....

We've got some really scary female karatekas at our club aswell. The better fighter will win no matter the gender. Its the year 2003, lets move on shall we?

yup I practice Chito-Ryu.. I've taken the liberty of translating an introductory chapter from the norwegian Chito-ryu manual. I didnt have time to read through it afterwards so there may be some wierd spelling and grammar at times. CHITO-RYU Chito-Ryu was founded by Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose. O'sensei was born in Kume in Naha, Okinawa 1898. O'sensei is the grandson of Soken Bushi Matsumara a well known karateka. O'sensei started training in Toudi(karate) at the age of 7. His first teacher was Aragaki. A lot of the founders of japanese karate studied with Aragaki, among them Higashionna(Naha-te), Miyagi(goju-Ryu)Mabuni(shito-ryu) and Funakoshi. The most influential instructor o'sensei studied with was Chotuko Kyan. Kyan was apperantly a notorious troublemaker and O'sensei developed alot of his karate in barbrawls around naha's red light district...The third influential instructor yhat helped "shape" o'senseis karate was Mabuni. Mabuni haught O'sensei the martial art Ti which has some similarities with aikido. O'sensei chose the chito-ryu ro remind us of karates chinese heritage. chi means a thousand (years), to is the name of "old China".
