  1. I was just curious, how will promotion go for bjj? Normally in most other styles of M.A. I've been exposed to, you are tested on specific material and what not. How will it go for bjj???
  2. In my school, it's white, yellow, orange, green, purple, blue, red, advanced red, beginner brown, brown, advanced brown, and then black. The advanced belts are that color with a black stripe along the entire length of the belt, and then beginner ones have a white stripe through the entire length of the belt.
  3. Yea...that is a very good point. When I think about it too, everything I have learned doesn't seem like a waste of time at all. It is worth learning. Thanks.
  4. So I did some investigating and I found out just exactly what style of kempo my school teaches. It is a blend of Shaolin Kempo and American Kempo. I'm not sure though how I feel about this. I don't know if I should be excited to learn a blend of both, or feel kind of cheated because I'm not learning one true form of kempo. Anybody got any thoughts on this???
  5. Well my school is actually for kempo, but after my class on Tuesdays, one of the top instructors for my school teaches a bjj class.
  6. Has anyone every heard of/know any good information on Leo Fong?
  7. I would have seriously went crazy. I would have been gritting my teeth and snarling so bad at them that if they decided to stick around for more, they would have gotten more. I agree with some of the previous postings. I don't mes around when it comes to my family!
  8. know of any kajunkenbo school in new jersey?
  9. I recently have been looking for a JKD school in the area. I think I found a good one with good lineage. The sifu of the school was taught by Bruce Lee as well as exchanged some info on techniques with him. Now I just have to try to make time in my schedule to train in it.
  10. Hey gzk, what exactly is shootfighting?
  11. Honestlyif it took 3 years that would be just fine with me. I figured around 5 years was what I was expecting.
  12. Yea, I figured it would take several years. Someone in my class has been training for years and he's only a blue belt.
  13. When I was younger I trined in Shukokai karate for about 1 & 1/2 years. Now , I've been training in kenpo for 6 months and bjj for a little over a month. So I have a long ways to go.
  14. By the way, his website is https://www.leejkd.com.Check it out if you'd like. He has pictures of all if his "certificates" if you look at the section on him.
  15. It is defintely fun to watch, but for people who train in some sort of grappling(such as me), it is a little boring. But I definitely respect the striking skills of everyone of the competitors in the WCL.
  16. Does anyone know of a anywhere in New Jersey I could train in muay thai?? preferably around central jersey...
  17. I know hat there is no specific time frame for belt promotions in bjj, but this is a hypothetical question. If one were to train in bjj once a week from 45-60 minutes that one night, how long do yo think it would take them to move up to blue belt???
  18. well he's supposedly a grandmaster in kempo but has extensive training in jkd so idk
  19. hey kajukenbopr...do you know of any kajukenbo school in jersey?
  20. How do I know if I am studying koshu ryu kenpo? My school teaches a blended kenpo. It apparently has its base from kenpo but includes alot of muay thai, aikido, kajukenbo, and jiu jitsu techniques. It was never explained to me just what style of kenpo I am working to get my black belt in. Any ideas? What are some characteristics of koshu ryu kenpo?
  21. I recently read that Mitose is the man who taught Ed Parker. So does that mean that every style of kenpo really comes from kosho ryu kenpo?
  22. Well it was just the very basics of jeet kune do. In fact, he even has more videos and I can see that everything he teaches seems to be legit, but since he himself seems not to be, I'm not sure if I really want to be involved with some one like that.
  23. After every one of my classes I always find myself the last one in the dojo doing the same thing. I always talk to my instructor after class. Sometimes I have questions on the material, and other times we just talk about martial arts in general.
  24. Yea, that's what I figured. He's supposedly huge in the martial arts world but no one has ever heard of him and there is no record of his training prior to 1992, but some how he's a grandmaster. I ordered one of his jeet kune do DVD's and was seriously dissapointed. I mean the material was for real but I just feel like I was ripped off. It seemed like such a cheaply made video and he even goofs around a little in it. Forget that.
  25. I have studied bjj for a little over a month now and so far we have done all the basic yet tiring drills. Technique wise we have learned breaking the closed guard, rodeo mount from side control, the upa, and the triangle. Does anyone know what I can be expecting to learn next or soon in the future?
