Hey Everyone, I have been offline for about a month and I wanted to drop by and let everyone know I am alive. I have been training my friend and fellow instructor Ray Gilbert for the World Kempo Championships that took place last week in Budapest, Hungary. I trained him five days a week 8 hours a day which were 3 sessions a day. I am proud to announce that he won 2 gold medals for the USA. One in full contact fighting and one in MMA rules fighting. There were about 380 in the event from all over the world including Russia, Belgium, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Portugal, France and other places. There were 4 people that represented the USA. With Respect and Honor, James Bullock

Active Recovery workouts is a method to help your muscles recover quicker by utilizing short frequent "mini" workouts. Example: I did 10 sets of 4 reps of explosive pushups....doesn't seem like much but they are all maximum effort and the next day my shoulders and chest were fried...sore as hell. So to help the recover process I did 2 sets of knee push ups just to get some extra blood flow so my muscles could recover faster. The ladders work like this.. 1 push up..rest for 15-20 seconds...then 2 push ups, then 3, 4,5,6,7,8. One cycle of 8 ladders is 36 push ups. So I did two sets of 8 ladders and that equals 72 push ups... -

There is no rule stating that just because you train in Shotokan you can't learn TKD kicks. Have your brother teach you the TKD kicks or get some TKD kicking DVDs so you don't have to switch arts. Your martial arts journey is YOUR journey...if you like an element or variation of something that another style does.....take it and put it in your arsenal. My opinion,

If you could pick one technique...
James Bullock replied to DWx's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well when you put the question that way... The single technique that is the embodiment of my method would be the right hand straight lead. To intercept with that single tool as often as possible before the assailant can become a threat. -

I agree with Ps1 To me "Maximum effect with minimum effort" would be...awareness, avoidance, and intuitional listening. -

Hey Brian, I have some chunks of wood that range from 30 pounds to 100 pounds. I usually use the 30 pound chunks do develop explosive power with the throws. I use the 100 piece for the clean and press and the carries. Great for conditioning and for your grip. -

Who is your "mentor" in MA??
James Bullock replied to karatekid1975's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I would also have to say my parents. When I was 13 I tried to quite karate ( i did for a day..lol) because I was fat and lazy. My dad wouldn't let me and to him I am eternally grateful. I have no idea what I would be doing if it wasn't for the martial arts. -

I agree with Brian on all points... I would spend at least a month at one then a month at the other school...so you can make an informed decision. One thing you will have to be is "athletic" in every sense of the word if you are wanting to get into the movie business as a martial artist. Look at Jet Li, Tony Jaa, and Jackie chan.... very athletic individuals to say the least.

Doing push ups with your hands at shoulder width apart activates more of the pectoral muscles. With the hands closer or touching uses more triceps. Hands wider uses more of the deltoid muscles. One arm push ups are a fantastic strength builder not only for the chest and triceps but for core stability. There are more than 30 variations of the push up. You can develop specific strength qualities with different types of push ups. The type you will be developing is strength endurance. You can also develop explosive strength with clap push ups.

Hey Brian, MMA Rules Medium Contact to the face Heavy contact to the body Medium contact to the legs Equipment: Mouth Guard, MMA Gloves, and a cup Point Fighting Light contact to the face Medium to heavy contact to the body Equipment: MMA Gloves, Foot pads and a cup Muay Thai Medium Contact to the face Heavy to the body Medium contact to the legs Equipment: 16 once boxing gloves, mouth guard, and a cup Submission Wrestling No strikes of any kind Equipment: Gi or no Gi Some of the higher levels go harder if it is mutually agreed upon. Some of us hardcore guys tend to get a little rough with each other. But I vary the intensity so that even the guys that like it rough can learn to have enough control to point spar with lower ranks. I especially like switching from MMA rules to point sparring because it helps you to be able to have greater command of your tools. That way you have no preference. -

Hey Brian, Many of the Dog Brothers are also JKD instructors under Dan Inosanto. There are also some that are pretty high level in BJJ. -
how many hours do you train a day?
James Bullock replied to boyo1991's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Great points... Schedule your training time around your life not your life around your training time.....Balance in everything leads to a much less stressful life in my opinion. -
Hello All, I thought I might from time to time share some of my drills, strength training, and conditioning methods. One of my current endeavors that I am working on is getting my Specialist in Sports Conditioning certification from I.S.S.A (International Sports Science Association). I will start with Skill conditioning circuits... Skill Conditioning Circuits The variables consist of doing the following for: Reps 10-15-or more per exercise Time 30-45sec-1min- or more per exercise Each exercise in the circuit should be done one right after the other. If doing the circuit more than once rest for about 1-2 min between each set. Doing the circuit once is considered one set. Circuit 1 - Jumping Jacks - Push ups - Crunches - Squat Thrusts Circuit 2 - Jumping Jacks - Front Kick, Side Kick, Back Kick combo (do all three on one leg and then the other...back and forth for the prescribed time or reps. If doing for reps then doing all three kicks on one side is considered one rep. - Push Ups - Body Squats Circuit 3 - Foot work only (move around focusing on footwork make sure to move quickly and change angles and so on for the entire duration.) - Shadow Boxing (punch only) - Squat Thrusts - Shadow Boxing (kicking only) - Push Ups - Shadow Boxing (punch and kick combos) - Side to side hops (slalom jumps) It may appear to be easy but try Circuit 3 with 1min per exercise without any rest in between each movement....7 total minutes of work...and it feels like an hour...lol.. I suggest slowly progressing to a desired number of reps or desired amount of time. These are just basic circuits you can mix how you want to and add other exercises or movements as well. I have probably about 60 different circuits that I have used. Hope you like it... P.S. Do what your capabilities will allow....don't kill yourself trying to do more than you can handle...
