2nd Dan Exam..What was yours like?
Zanshin replied to dineshm's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Hi NewEnglands_KyoSa, What are "pyung ahn one steps"? Are they a type of pre-arranged sparing, and if so how were they different to your regular one steps? -
what's in your black belt grading ?

Thanks for that Shorikid, that makes a lot of sense..."Train hard, fight easy". -
Quite frankly Dan, what you do in the privacy of your own home is your business: lol: Back to karate though. What were your findings?
-
By definition, a research paper is "a formal written report that includes research findings and a student's own ideas." If you are looking for stuff to include in your "literature review" a good starting point might be the "Karateforum.com Articles" section. Also maybe look at some of the more mainstream publications such as "Fighting arts" and "Combat" magazines. If you are after "data results" you could also use the forums as a method, by posting questionnaires. You can then use your experience to draw your own conclusions. I hope that helps and good luck.

ha ha! Yes I know exactly what you mean. I think that they still do that in the Serpentine in Hyde Park. Even when it’s frozen.

Hi Peazz, and welcome to the forum. I think you will find the boys and girl on this board more than happy to help with your request. I am sure that your Googling and Wiki skills are up to scratch, and there are bound to be many previous topics on this board that cover most of your needs. In addition, don’t forget you have 16 years of your own Karate training to call upon for reference. This is often better than repeating what has been said by others, as it is direct from source as it were. All the best.

pitbulljudoka, I would like to apologise for my earlier post, upon re-reading it, I realise it was disrespectful. In the UK, it seems we have a lot of dojos that "bulk out" their lessons with seemingly extreme or un-necessary exercises. Often this is because there is a genuine lack of Karate knowledge with the instructors. Re-reading your post and that of Shorikid, I can see that your training is heavily geared towards fitness and body conditioning. In that respect it sounds like you well and truly earned your shodan. All the best. -
How do you define a good teacher?
Zanshin replied to ShotokanKid's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Being able to explain how to do Jun-tsuki / Oi-tsuki well. And making it make sense. How to move well and to get his/her students to replicate them -

You are having a laugh aren't you? Either that or your school is having one with you. I mean come on! "50 knuckles push ups in parking lot behind dojo" Ive done a few JKF (Japan Karate Federation) dan gradings and never been asked to do half the mad stuff you were asked to do. Are you pulling our legs lol!! -
At some dojos this type technique may be used to teach beginners, but really it is something that should be avoided. Power should be generated from the floor up, not the shoulders down IMO. Throwing the shoulders in front of the leg not only telegraphs your intentions to an opponent, it compromises the power generated from the technique and will leave you vulnerable to over rotation of the kick and loss of balance. A good kumite fighter will see this type of kick coming a mile off and will be able to pick you off with a punch before you are able to land it. I take the point about following on from a cross punch, but even then I would avoid this, as it is committing to the kick half way through the preceding technique. Watch a good Muay Thai fighter kick, virtually no shoulder movement.

With all due respect pitbulljudoka, this is the worst thing you can be teaching yourself to do. Using your shoulders to swing your hips into position is the most basic of no!no!s as not only does it teach incorrect body mechanics, it "telegraphs" each kick you are doing. In addition there is a risk that you are not protecting you chu-sen or centre line, the most fundamental thing in karate. Each and every technique should start from the Hara or centre of your body. Just my view

Wise words Brian. In Daito Ryu (which was where Hapkido comes from I think) you are taught to intercept at the hand or preferably above the elbow as you can then control the attackers forearm. Its all about correct distance and timing. As PS1 says, trying to block a bat with your arm is not clever.

New Program... charge how much?
Zanshin replied to Holliesc3's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Why not try a “pay as you train system”. Charge say $5.00 per session and see whether that covers your overheads! I would be reluctant to start charging people on a monthly basis until you have established what you are trying to do. All the best in your endevours. -
Anyone here familiar with Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu?
Zanshin replied to blackxpress's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Indeed it is. I wish you all the best with your studies. -
That sounds really impressive. It seems like you have an excellent dojo with a good heart and actually, I bet there is something quite uplifting about training that early on new years day. It's statement a suppose, that you are a committed Karate-ka. Very nice, please let us know how it goes. Kampai

Why not? I would! Good luck and I hope Mr Nash can help you out with your search for a Wado Club. -

Found this about Bujinkan it on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bujinkan Looks pretty cool to me, if they are legit, and you can only establish that yourself by doing some homework on the club / instructor. Go a long and have a look. As keiran says, they appear to focus on correct body movement. There is a lot of traditional Jujutsu elements tied into its syllabus and as a wado man you should take to that fairly well. On the subject of continuing your wado training, have you tried to make contact with Bob Nash's group? They may be able to point you in the right direction. https://www.uswadokai.com/ Good luck -
And also the target! It’s a balancing act I guess. All to do with good technique - being able to deliver as much Kinetic energy (using the correct force) as quickly as possible, whilst not putting yourself in a position where you are vulnerable to being hit. Movement is key. You guys may be closer to each other's ideas than you realize. We could talk about it all day, but if we actually got together and could "see" what each is saying, you might be pretty close together. Or, it could be the opposite, I guess. However, there is often something lost in the translation. No, although I think you are on the right lines. Its called Tai-sabaki or body management.

Then again, this one is pretty good also! Love the Kotegaishi!!

I am not sure how Kempo or Kenpo is done in the States but this is a pretty good clip. Some really solid kicks and punches and awesome throws. I can really equate to this as it is very similar to the style of training we do at our dojo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UHufK4jfiU

6.00am!!!! New Years Day!!! Now that is dedication. Fairplay to you all. I dont think we would have many takers at our dojo If that was introduced. lol.

I hope you didn't skip the Pizza though! lol. Our last training session was a blast. We covered a very old version of Seipai Kata and did a lot of bunkai that goes with it. To finish off with we also did a bit of "Hojo Jutsu" or prisoner tying. Different! Then across the road to the pub for a few Tizers! We start the year with our “Keiko Hajime” (first training session of the year) in the second week of Jan, where we will be hitting the ground running as we have a big comp at the end of Feb take part in. Cant wait
