http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpIsKMO3zko Here's the video like I said I would do. I did left and right axe kicks facing the sides and facing the camera. Don't be nice, I don't deserve it -
Details of the Axe Kick
The BB of C replied to The BB of C's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Sure. I'll do it tomorrow. Right now it's 9:00 where I live and even with all the lights on in the room, the lighting is still horrible. Tomorrow afternoon the sun will be shining through my windows and you can see it then. -
Prelude: Last week I moved into an apartment and set my computer up in the living space. My computer has one of those built-in webcams and it's actually really good. I've been waiting since I got the computer to do two things. Edit a video and use the camera to break down the form of my kicks and make sure I'm actually doing them right. Now that my computer is finally in a place with enough open space for me to do any move I know without breaking something, I got on it. The story so far: The first thing I tried was my axe kick. It was either a really good axe or a really bad one. This is because now that I could look at my own axe kick really slowly, I can see everything that my body is doing and freeze-frame it. The following is the qualities of my axe kick: The height of the apex is completely straight over my head. My knee touches my shoulder and between my toes and the floor, my legs are completely perpendicular to the ground. The speed in real time I believe is great. My arms fly up and almost end up looking like spread bird wings when I do the kick. Especially at the apex. The toes on the kicking foot are pointed straight up at the apex. My torso leans into the kick when it's going up and leans back when it's going down. I connect with the heel. My planted foot pivots 90 degrees while the leg is going up and stays there. Questions I have: Should my kicking foot have straight-pointed toes at the apex? Should my arms stay at my side, come up, or go down when I'm doing the kick? Should I keep my torso straight? If so, at what point in time during the kick? Should my torso be back or forward at any point in time during the kick? If so, where and at what points? Should my planted foot be pivoting more or less?

I always believed breaking a neck is excessive. But I don't care too much about legal ramifications about defending myself. I try to train my instincts to stay attacking until I see the enemy stop moving entirely because if I just use a Dis-abler take-down and run away, or create space and flee, then I'm giving him an opportunity to draw a weapon.

I don't know if anyone has already seen this one but I think it makes a lot of sense. -
Finding Tournaments
The BB of C replied to ShoriKid's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I use Karatetournaments.com You can search for tournaments by organization or state/region. I prefer going by state. Then he simply calls or e-mails the hosts of all the tournaments he could go to and asks them if they have full contact or continuous contact events. That's what I do. -
Korean arts are very popular. I don't know why. Because of their popularity, they're easy to capitalize on which makes a good school all the more rare. In New York there is a town called Scottsville. It's a rural town for the most part but there is an urban part of it too. In the urban part there is a Tae Kwon Do academy that's unlike every other Korean martial art studio I've ever seen. The training there is great and the black belts are deserving of their title. I'm familiar with most of the other TKD schools in the Rochester area. Three of them are part of a chain and that chain SUCKS! The same thing happened with my Kuk Sool Won school. Also a chain and owned by the same man. There were way too many politics, training was bad and there was too much emphasis on rank. I'll never forget the 4th degree black belt teacher that had sparring strategies so contradictory to martial arts or self defense in general that I actually felt compelled to call him out in class. Then they wondered why I went to supplement my training with a school that practiced full contact and they kicked me out.

Self-Defense: Superior to fighting?
The BB of C replied to joesteph's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That was interesting. I'll definitely be going back to that. I didn't like how he talked down martial arts but at the same time he has a point (to a certain degree). Most karate systems were originally designed to do what he just talked about but a lot of schools turned towards sport as time went on. -

I doubt that. Maybe it was Steven Segal. But if Chuck Norris got a piece of that car, the car would no longer be in existence

Does anyone have a video of Konsan kata?
The BB of C replied to superwormy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
What style is it from? I might be able to dig it up. -
Different media for different technique
The BB of C replied to ShoriKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Personally, I don't believe in books, videos or tapes to a certain degree. To get the most out of anything, you need to learn it first hand from a live instructor. -
If I use a closed fist, I focus my intentions through the target but snap after contact. The vist is vertical and usually followed by Waterfall technique. If I follow through with the punch, my hand is usually open using a palm or ridge hand.

Roll of a sensei and is there a time when you don't need one
The BB of C replied to wouldbemaster's topic in Karate
Role of the teacher is obviously to be a good teacher (and all that implies). I'm not sure that there are many people who have ever gotten to the point where they don't need a teacher of their own. But those who have at least need someone of their level as a training partner so that they can still learn from each other. Basically, there is never a time when it's safe to stop learning or "go without a sensei." -
The people that do martial arts as kids or for generally just short periods of time for God-only-knows-what reasons very much outweigh those who stick with it. That's probably the reason for that statistic.

Recommending MA to a friend??
The BB of C replied to storyteller's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I say go for it -
I noticed that the kiats are very much over used in Extreme divisions. Not only are there too many but they are loud and obnoxious.
