  1. I'm definately going to try this out.
  2. Try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_martial_arts#Korean_martial_arts_.28.ED.95.9C.EA.B5.AD.EB.AC.B4.EC.88.A0.2F.E9.9F.93.E5.9C.8B.E6.AD.A6.E8.A1.93.29
  3. That was nothing short of interesting. I am not yet sure what to think of that video.
  4. That's pretty cool
  5. Either way it's good to see him back. I remember everyone saying "'Fearless' is going to be his last movie so it's probably going to be really good." (which they were right by the way)
  6. I think it's all about your instinct and reflexes. You could have any kind of guard you want as long as you are able to block to begin with. I've heard about people without any guard at all winning street fights.
  7. I saw a trailer yesterday. I was excited. I thought Jet Li was retired after "Fearless."
  8. I dissagree. If you've seen some of the clips I've seen of the old stuff. It's rediculous! It's brutal! It was the most fun thing I've ever watched! It's not nearly as intense and fun to watch nowadays. The fights have gotten way slower, way weaker, and there is no variety in fighters anymore, and the fighters with different styles don't use them.
  9. If this is him, it doesn't look like anything special to me.
  10. I think that can be answered simply by figuring out in what order civilizations started settling in the varying countries.
  11. I take martial arts to keep me fit. I take martial arts to learn to defend myself. I take martial arts to build a career for myself. I take martial arts because it's one of my life's passions.
  12. When I was eight-years-old and my older brother was training me. He got a little into it and picked me up over his head, and slammed me on the floor in my family room. I don't remember ever being in more pain. When I was 13 I got in a fight at a sledding hill with five people at once who tried to steal my sleds. I prevented them from stealing my sleds and held them off for ten full minutes with limited karate skills and no foot mobility. I was anchored to the ground by my boots. Meanwhile, there's a sixth one throwing ice balls at me from the top of the hill. I admitted defeat after ten minutes and walked away.
  13. "Ong-Bak and the Thai Warrior" was 90% old fashioned Thai Boxing. Otherwise known as Muay Boran as far as Panom Yeerum's role was concerned. In a lot of ways it's very similar to Burmese boxing, but they're not the same.
  14. I know that if I'm not in a McDojo, I'm in the closest darn thing you can get to a McDojo without it actually being a McDojo. Not that I like it though.
  15. You're welcome. Maybe you should look that video up again?
  16. Burmese boxing rules allow headbutts. They probably also train differently. Other than that they're similar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lethwei
  17. I believe you're right in a sense of that the martial arts have become very commerical in the United States. We have a name on this forum for commercial schools. They're called McDojos. Also, training in the states is often watered down to make it "safe." Which I don't understand because the people who train the full styles in the other countries seem to be doing fine.
  18. I haven't seen it yet. But I set my Digital Video Recorder to catch it for me.
  19. I tricked my opponent in an actual fight once. Twice in the same combo as a matter of fact, and I do it all the time during sparring when I'm putting out a lot of effort. What I did that particular time, I faked a left hook. Then I just put an open palm right next to his head quickly so he could see it. When he looked directly into it as if it were going to show him his future, I kneed him in the solar plexus. Tricking the opponent is not only effective most of the time, but it's also very fun
  20. Imagine you start training at a school (some of you may have already been in or are in a school like this) that teaches techniques very strictly. For example, if you do a technique wrong, you are forced to do a lot of push ups or even hit in a diciplinary fashion until you get it right. What would you think of that school if you were to train there? If there is someone reading this who has been in a school like that, what did you think? If there is someone reading this that is in a school like that, what do you think about it? I've never been to a school like that. But I could imagine it'd be a very traditional style school and would probably produce good, strong, and tough martial artists. That is my opinion.
  21. I'd put Wing Chun, Aikido, and Judo together.
  22. There's nothing wrong with Christians doing martial arts. I'm a Christian martial artist. To those who say it can do anything but make faith stronger, I beg to differ. The martial arts have helped me a lot in making my faith stronger. In fact; I pray every time just before a fight and I always do better. Turning the other cheek has virtually nothing to do with it. When the martial arts or anything for that matter become a problem is when the people start putting it above God, worshiping it, fill in the blanks I'm out of examples. What does that mean at the beginning of this topic that Christians can be a stumbling block in martial arts?
  23. Grappling and ground combat styles are like arm wrestling. Yesterday, my father (a bodybuilder) was telling me a story of him getting beaten in arm wrestling competition by a guy who was half his size and never lifted weights in his life. I am very strong for my age and size especially for someone who never lifts weights and I am not good at arm wrestling or any kind of wrestling for that matter. The thing about grappling and ground combat is that some people are simply good at it, some people are simply not. Brazillian Jiu Jitsu might not be your style. But if you wish to stay with it, keep working at it. It's not that you're incapable, it's that you're inferior and you need to train harder at it. You may want to consider adopting better sleep habbits and diets immidiately and combine it with fitness outside of the class. I suggest moving your schedule around to fit all of this in.
  24. I have found that body shots are not as effective on muscular people.
