Experiences with Capoeira
The BB of C replied to NightOwl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Those were some very cool clips you found. In reguard to the clip I found, in my experience, kicks often connect harder than they appear. -
The Human Weapon

I just got done watching the Ninjitsu episode. There was some pretty cool stuff in there. I especially liked the obstacle course. I couldn't believe that Bill Duff won his fight and Jason Chambers lost. That usually doesn't happen -

It looks like a mixed martial arts school to me. -
Experiences with Capoeira

I found a video a while ago that would relate well to this discussion. I dug it back up for the occassion. What do you think of that? -
First, may I ask why you want to learn weapons? I'm just asking because it can effect which one you should start out with.

I think the most impratical weapon is the chain whip.

I hope I get to go skiing this year. More importantly, I hope I still know how. Oh well, I still have never been beaten in a race. Anyone want to try it?

NO to low kicks! Yes to high kicks!
The BB of C replied to 50inches's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I just remembered another time that I have used high "fancy" kicks effectively. There was one instance I was sparring against a Kyokushin black belt while demoing the class. As soon as I found an open spot I defaulted to my main strategy of cutting loose on it. I hit him about six times in the chest and then took a step back. I saw him cover up his chest and take a step foreward. When he covered up his chest I spun around and caught him on the side of the head with a swing kick. I pulled it because I wasn't sure I was allowed to do that or not, but I did make a light contact on the side of his head with the bottom of my foot. He looked surprised. -
Experiences with Capoeira
The BB of C replied to NightOwl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I always wanted to fight a good Capoeira artist. Like many styles, I can identify their natural weakness in the offense and defense. But I've always wondered if I'd be able to manipulate it or not. Capoeira is one of those styles. I've never had any experience with them because I live in New York and there are no Capoeira schools in this state. -
This is a tricky one. Some techniques I use are quite flashy too but if you teach anything right, it can have a practical place in self defense. I think you can find a happy medium if you do as such.

Notice how everyone is pretty much saying the same thing?

I believe it's a combination of body movement, strength, speed, technique and internal energy.

May I ask what you did?

I would try to guard my face while reaching for the hand that's got my neck at the same time. Hopefully I'd be able to break one of the fingers and then knee the attacker or use and elbow in a sensitive spot, probably his ribs. Or I'd thumb a pressure point and force him off me with pain.

As far as Asia goes, a lot of Fillipino styles branched from Japanese styles. Japanese branched from Korean. Korean branched from Chinese and Mongolian. Chinese branched from India.

The broom stick. I know I'm not good enough to get in close enough against a long range melee weapon like that with a knife.

Martiol Arts outlawed in the US?
The BB of C replied to mantis99's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
they would actually be tougher on the martial artist saying that he's trained like a police officer That is prejudice, they can't (or shouldn't) be able to prosecute you outside the bounds of the laws for anyone. For example, they can mitigate or aggrivate based on how bad you beat them, but not based on what your background is. If there is a case that they are doing that because of your blackbelt, not because of how bad you beat them, then the ACLU should (i said should) step in and protect your rights. It should be no different for you than anyone else. They do though, sometimes. It's disgusting. -
Sport martial arts have become quite stupid with rules like this.

Self defense for (academic) students
The BB of C replied to The BB of C's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Sensei Rick, you are now my new best friend -
I heard about this back in 2002. I was psyced because "Dragonball Z" was my favorite show at the time. My friends and I still love it. But it never happened. The cast was supposed to be totally different. I have the magazine issue about it somewhere. I'll search for it and post back with what the cast was originally supposed to be.

The One
The BB of C replied to Existence_is _suffering's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I remember that movie. It was pretty cool. I don't remember any "jerky" movements. But if there were any, chances are it was part of all the special effects they were using.
