  1. If I'm sparring with a brawler I love to use a Wing-Chun like strategy. Sparring in class I try to use counter kicks.
  2. I love legos. This is really nifty.
  3. In close I tend to use a strategy similar to what you might see from a Wing-Chun fighter and then either switch to a throw or a kick combo.
  4. I don't think so. Sometimes things get ridiculous though. I was almost arrested recently for making a movie. Even though the lights and multitude of cameras were obvious, the security guard was thrown off simply because we were doing martial arts stunts. It sounds like fun but like the ninja, be ready for anything.
  5. If you think so than just go for it. Bring the articles to back up your claim if you have to.
  6. Geeze you're good. I wouldn't have thought of that. In that case I have another question: Why do I consider dislocating an ankle before I consider a groin strike?
  7. Thanks, KarateEd.
  8. I've always found it more difficult to contest with smaller opponents than larger. Every real fight I've ever been in that I've lost (four), I've lost to someone who was at least five inches shorter than me. I was in one of those perpetual states of random thought this morning and it popped into my head. "How can I overcome that?" And I thought of this: I'm almost certain I have trouble because my kicks swing too wide and in order to strike vital points with my hands, I have to drop down to their height which leaves all of my vitals open for counter. So what if I were to put them into the same position by dropping on my knees. I'm not using this to talk about fighting smaller opponents. I just used my weakness against short people as an example. I got curious to see what the forum members here would think about techniques applied from a kneeling stance. I have a feeling that if I had to make an opponent throw a kick at my head while I was kneeling, I would be able to catch it at the ankle. Or if he tried to punch me, he would have to lean down and leave himself open just like I do. Kuk Sool Won has a number of black belt techniques involving wrist locks and submissions that are performed from a kneeling stance. Aikido does the same things. Capoeira has a lot of kicks, tripping, and sweeping techniques that happen from a kneeling-type position. However, I can imagine a kneeling technique would leave oneself open to tackles. But that being said, it's pretty easy to get taken down with a tackle if the opponent is half confident in himself. And side-stepping, sweeping, tripping, and countering are a lot easier said than done even for some of the more experienced martial artists I've known. Anyway. Thoughts?
  9. I've jumped in and broken up fights or helped a bystander a couple of times. Thankfully it was only twice. Once in high school and once I broke up a couple of punk-rocker mall rats. So I wasn't dealing with too high a power level. So I'm confident that I wouldn't let myself stand around. But both of those times, I did stand and stare for about five seconds both times. It took me that long for my brain to register the situation and make a decision. I think it's because I've been sheltered growing up. But when I see violence happen right in front of me it sends kind of a paralyzing shock through me. Kind of like "Wow is that really happening?" Then I snapped myself back to reality and jumped in to break it up.
  10. I-tunes is probably the only music source that it works with.
  11. I'm moving away from macs. I tried it. I didn't like it. They're too expensive for my major and I don't have that kind of money. So I'm trading it in but like I said, I need to format it first. They are 99% virus proof. There is a trojan for Macs but people say the only way to get it is to download porn from limewire. It's a great computer unless you need to do things like video editing. If that happens, hope you have a lot of money because you'll need it for all the programs and video codecs you'll need.
  12. This is for the mac users of the forum (if any). I'm trading my I-Mac for a different computer soon and I figure it would be best to format all my history, files, settings, etc. Just completely clearing everything on the computer to make it easier for the next person to set up. Does anyone here know how to go about doing that?
  13. I think I'm all set for seeing what kind of moves would be done and how it would be applied. Now I need to move onto everything else.
  14. Take a look at this video I just stumbled upon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLUn49eYZH4&feature=related I wondered what the karate practitioners of this forum would think about it. Especially the parts with the young women learning the moves so quickly.
  15. I don't know enough about individual sects of Tai Chi to be able to determine that. If it makes a difference, I could add it to my list of questions to consult someone about. The first two videos I have already seen. The third one was helpful.
  16. Those were very helpful in showing what the moves that Aaron might do during a fight. There are a few questions I have that are more difficult to answer. For example, is there a good video in existence that shows a real, full-contact fight featuring a Tai Chi master and someone of a well known external style like Muay Thai? Locating something like that would be extremely helpful. In the first book, Aaron's right arm is broken just over his elbow joint. In the original version of the story, his arm being broken relocates Triple Warmer-13 and stops normal chi flow through that arm so he can't use certain techniques anymore. I have to check with a real person and see if things like that are possible. And if they are, if there's anything about the points or location of the break that I need to change. Also, the Aaron character is known for using dim-mak techniques that cause temporary peristalsis. In the third book, at the end of his first fight with the character David, he uses a technique that paralyzes his legs temporarily (and as an added humiliation, causes him to void his bowels) by jamming his fingers through David's center of gravity. Somewhere in the general area of Kidney-11. The move was inspired by the move done by the character wearing the purple suit between :14 and :16 of this video (Street Fighter Alpha's Gen character was half of the inspiration for my series' Aaron character, Aaron is known for having a lot of similar fighting strategies to Gen. If you watch the whole video, you'll get a sense for the way Aaron fights. Though I think Gen uses advanced Mantis style). Similar to the paragraph before this one, I need to check up on the possibility and accuracy so that when I get to that actual part in the story, it's as accurate and realistic as possible.
  17. That was an interesting search. It was kind of helpful but not ultra helpful. Next semester in college I'll be taking Tai Chi for physical education credits Hopefully the teacher will know stuff about it.
  18. This is interesting. They seem to only meet on days and times when I have class. As soon as I get out, the class is over. This is getting ridiculous.
  19. Don't worry about it. It didn't seem rude to me at all. I like the idea about training with a Tai Chi group. I'll look around and try to find one. I know that there was one training outside of the college building all the time but as the weather got colder they dissappeared. I wonder if they temporarily disbanded or relocated inside.
  20. The guy was the inspiration for Aaron as there was a lot of inspiration for a lot of the characters from other people. "Aaron" doesn't know because "Aaron" doesn't know about the series lol We haven't spoken in over a year. Yes, I am writing them. I know there's five in the series because I always plan everything out when it comes to series. "Preparations", "Introductions", "Open Roads", "Spirits' Wrath", "Final Destinations." I know exactly what happens in all of them between all the characters. It took me two months of research and character development to get the basics of it all down. I already started writing the first book and it hit me that I don't know enough about Tai Chi to get anything accurate about Aaron without guessing. Throughout the series, Aaron is not a huge character but he is important in the first and third books. In the third book, he gets introduced to the character David who plays a much bigger role throughout the series. They fight and Aaron uses a technique on David that temporarily paralyzes him. This is the original story anyway. But it's things like that which happen with Aaron I want to try to make as accurate as possible. I don't think I'd be able to do that unless I were to actually consult with someone who knows a lot of Tai Chi. And I did do a lot of research to try to find it myself. Like I said, I'd talk to "Aaron" but we don't get along that well and he might figure out that Aaron was loosely based off of him and I'm guessing he wouldn't like that much.
  21. I have. No luck so far. I do actually know someone who practices Tai Chi a lot (was the inspiration for Aaron). But me and him don't get along too well and he's a bit on the clever side he'd probably figure out Aaron was based off him. So I'd like to avoid it if at all possible. But I will keep checking for other masters online. Hopefully there's someone here who knows stuff.
  22. I second that. Congratulations. I'll say a prayer for them in hopes they have a successful, life-long marriage.
  23. That's all fine and dandy you two are interested in the stories but that is aside the point! Gosh darn it! I still got one of the most powerful characters that knows one of the most complicated styles and one of the styles that I know the least about! I get the feeling this isn't going to end well.
  24. I certainly hope it is. It took me two months to develop all the characters and I'm still falling short. Throughout the series there are twenty-six different characters and they all have separate story lines and almost all of them intersect.
