Saw that Jon Jones has been booted from the card for failing a drugs test. Hendricks also missed weight by a quarter pound so losses 20% of his fight purse. Lesnar was looking huge in the weigh ins.

Has anyone ever hosted a fight night or similar spectator event? I'm toying with the idea of a small inter-schools one. If you've been involved in hosting one, what are some of the things you wished you'd known beforehand? What were some of the things which turned out to be more important than you thought. For those that have spectatored at or maybe even fought, what was good about the event? Was there anything which could have been improved?

Swimming pool is a good suggestion. On land make sure to learn by starting from a crouched position lower to the ground before trying to do it from standing. Also if you can, its easier to learn when you have a slight decline slope to help you with the momentum.

Do you have a video of the two gunner? I'm struggling to picture the two.

I guess it would contribute to their all round athletic ability but I would guess there are quicker and more targeted approaches. But definitely complimentary.

I'm on the waiting list anyway as it's easier to opt out or delay than opt in so just waiting to see what date I get back... Need a crystal ball really Surgery is basically going to be this: http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/tommy-john-surgery-ucl-reconstruction?page=2 I have already competed quite a bit with the dodgy arm but it definitely limits me as any movement with extension is painful as is anything that requires me to weight bear or put stress through the joint.

Wow. Well I've never come across this before but I'll throw my 2 cents out there: First of all, has anyone actually sat down with them and had a chat to explain the significance of bowing and how it need not contradict any religious beliefs they may have? I think a lot of people have a misconception that bowing means subservience or worship. It might be that they just need someone to take the time to explain that it is more along the lines of a handshake or salute rather than worship of anything. Maybe you even have someone of the same (or related) denomination who could discuss it in greater detail with them. I wonder also if they use the right titles and honorifics in the dojo? Because to me at least if they have an issue with bowing they might also have an issue with calling someone "Shihan" or "Kaicho"? Personally I think it's good to be inclusive and accommodating of people's personal beliefs where possible. But bowing is part and parcel of a lot of Martial Arts so I would be asking the question of whether Shindokan Karate is the right thing for them.

Thanks JR. Normally I wouldn't bother with the comp but let's just say you're not far off the mark and it is one of those once in a lifetime events. My country won the bid to host the next European Championships and it will be the first time we have hosted for over 2 decades. It also coincides with 50 years of TKD in this country so we are pulling out all the stops including national TV coverage. Been working towards this for the last few years... To be honest the surgeon said if I wasn't doing a physical sport he wouldn't have bothered with the surgery. It's just a question of when top do it, try to squeeze it in before and hope I have enough time to train, or leave it and take a sabbatical for 2018...

Bit of an update for anyone that's been reading... 5.5 months after the original injury, an MRI scan and several doctors later, my official diagnosis is a complete tear of the ulnar collateral ligaments. Ouch! I met with an upper limb specialist today who is advocating surgery if I want to punch properly again. They'd take a tendon from my wrist and thread it around my elbow. Rehab would be 6 weeks in a brace then 6 months no training. So I've now got to make a decision on whether to have the surgery and if so when to have it. I'm working towards a competition in April next year so it's a question of risking surgery now and not being able to train properly in the run up out even being able to compete, or risk further damage by waiting to have the surgery done next year.

Welcome to the forums Anna Great question! The main thing I remember from my first day is being paired with an older kid who told me to make my front stance as wide as the tramlines on the tennis court we training on. I still remember it now and say it to all the kids who train with me.

Funnily enough this is what my granny swore by for her hands and feet (swap socks for gloves for the hands!). That and Vaseline on her feet.

No open carry laws as far as I'm aware. Even police officers have to get special dispensation to carry a firearm on duty as only Authorised Firearms Officers (AFO's) carry and I doubt they'd allow people to carry pepper spray. If I remember correctly a special exemption had to even be agreed on during London 2012 for the shooting event to take place and for teams to practice as this would normally be illegal. -
It's not official yet as they still have to agree at Rio. This is just the Executive Board agreeing to support the package put forward by Tokyo which includes karate, skateboarding, sports climbing, surfing and baseball/softball all as exhibition sports. The format they've agreed on so far is the same put forward originally by Tokyo and does include 2 kata event alongside 6 kumite divisions run by the WKF but open to all karateka. http://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1038023/five-sports-recommended-for-tokyo-2020-olympic-inclusion-all-approved-by-ioc-executive-board FWIW TKD might also be changing as there are discussions taking place over how to include an ITF style event.

Check local laws though. Pepper spray is illegal to carry by civilians in the UK. Then what's left for the civilian to use in the UK? More importantly, why is pepper spray illegal for civilians in the UK? It's classed as a Section 5 weapon in the 1968 Firearms Act. Police have a version they can use called PAVA, but this is not to be used by civilians. To be honest, the general rule in the UK is to not carry anything that is intended to be used as a weapon. Without wanting to open a whole different can of worms, ultimately I think it comes down to a difference in culture between the UK and US. Our homicide rate is quite a bit lower (4x) and the types of crime we encounter tend to be less violent so we have less need to carry things like pepper spray. If you want a bit of bedtime reading the Office for National Statistics has a lengthy report here: http://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/compendium/focusonviolentcrimeandsexualoffences/2015-02-12 But this bit in particular is worth noting: http://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/compendium/focusonviolentcrimeandsexualoffences/2015-02-12/chapter1violentcrimeandsexualoffencesoverview#use-of-weapons-and-injuries-in-violent-crimes If you download the data table linked in the report, 80% of incidents occurred without a weapon involved and in all likelihood you're just going home with a black eye so personally I have less of a need to carry a weapon here than I might do elsewhere in the world. -
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/36425046 The International Boxing Association (AIBA) have voted to allow professional boxers top compete alongside amateurs at this year's Olympics (provided they qualify and are chosen by their national team). Thoughts? Is this a good move or bad move? Do you anticipate any pro-boxers entering and if so, how do you think you'll do? For the uninitiated, there are a few differences between pro and amateur boxing matches. For a brief run down, see here: http://boxingontario.com/athletes/amateur-vs-pro-boxing/

Welcome to the forums dhdye Our school is run by a husband and wife team (with a bit of help from assistants). My instructor runs the classes and his wife carries out all of the admin and paperwork. Neither have a day job so a lot of the paperwork is done during the day but often she also does the paperwork in the back room whilst everyone is training. Was there any particular aspect you were looking for advice on?

Lupin1 is spot on. At that kind of rank it's all pretty arbitrary. I wouldn't sweat it until you start looking at the 1st kups or 1st dans and upwards. You mentioned you're currently 9th kup? At that rank to be honest you wouldn't have been training for very long. I would trust in your instructor's experience to know about who should be what rank. Best is just to be concerned with your own training and concentrate on what you're doing. If I remember correctly you're in the UK, free free to PM me the instructor if you want as chances are I might know them or know of them.
