A good day at the office
DWx replied to Zanshin's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Congrats! -
In general mass and speed contribute to power so with most of my techniques I focus on getting them as sharp as possible and then focus on using my body mass with the technique. Most times I utilise my mass through hip movements, depending on the technique of course.

2nd kyu grading on saturday
DWx replied to Zorbasan's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Good Luck! -
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It kinda hardened up after a day or two then disappeared... The skin came lose in a training session on Saturday ... was painful seeing as it was the club Christmas party that evening and I'd made the stupid design to wear heels.

I agree with this line of thought. Under Japanese occupation Tae Kyon virtually died out. The Japanese did not want the Koreans to learn how to fight as it would aid resistance efforts. Modern Tae Kyon was more likely to be reborn from Tae Kwon Do; ie. Tae Kyon copied TKD techniques not the other way around. TKD has way more kicking than Karate but that doesn't mean that it had to come from Tae Kyon. Its likely that there is a fair amount of Chinese influence in that area rather than the Tae Kyon influence. I would have thought also that whatever Tae Kyon techniques that survived were refined as although their orignial purpose was martial, as it became a game, the main objective was not to cause great inury, just to cause the opponent to loose balance or to tap them on the head.

Choi did not create all the forms from scratch himself. As I said earlier, I was under the impression he co-created them with Nam Tae Hi. So yes it is highly likely that they were a hybrid of Shotokan and Chung Do Kwan. Tae Kwon Do itself as a whole is hybrid of Korean, Japanese and Chinese martial arts anyway so the forms are bound to reflect the origins.

He added more than just the sine wave, he was the co-creater of the Chang-Hon forms, arguably the first Korean TaeKwon-Do forms as the other Kwans used the Pyong Ang forms until '67 when the Palgwe were created. He also developed military TaeKwon-Do through the Oh Do Kwan which introduced a significant amount of Koreans to the art. Probably a better word that is sometimes used to describe him is a Father of TaeKwon-Do as he did help to nurture it especially when he was President of the KTA.

What is the Biggest weight you have lifted and how many reps
DWx replied to Jeet Kune Do's topic in Health and Fitness
This thread is making me feel like a right weakling! I don't do weights at all but I tried to see how much I could bench... only 100lbs and I nearly tore my shoulder doing it.. -
That's quite a good analogy, I know that I myself have felt like I've been on a plateau before. Especially liked his final words.

Sparring/training/martial arts music
DWx replied to NightOwl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Only use music when I'm working general exercise drills like push ups and stuff. Sometimes use it when working on sparring/bag drills. Usually use sorta dance/club/trance music because the tempo is faster. I have that one . Prefer the Mortal Kombat dance remix though -
From my experiences WTF Taekwondo vs. ITF Taekwondo vs. other Taekwondo seems to have quite a bit of rivalry. This is only from where I live and may be different elsewhere though. A lot of rivalry tends to be down to politics more than anything else.

I'd have to say yes. A lot of Koreans (including the Kwan owners) were exposed to Karate during the Japanese occupation. Also some of the moves or forms are similar. I wouldn't put Karate down as the only parent style though. From my own experiences I can see elements of Chinese styles and of course there is TaeKyon which could well be the main parent style.

Thanks for the suggestions. I competed on it yesterday and luckily there were mats on every ring. Blister's still there but I can't feel it too much if I walk around with think socks on. Problem is it seems to be under quite a lot of skin, its not raised up though. Might have a go at draining it, I'll see how I feels after today. Thanks again.

Two days before I am competing in a tourny and I develop one huge bloodblister on the ball of my foot. Usually I'd just leave it and it sorts itself but its just gonna get worse before it gets better and I'll be crippled for Saturday. Anyone got any quick fix tips for stopping the soreness or making it more bearable? Thanks
