I totally agree that it is near impossible to compare the styles and better to compare the fighters. So much is attributed to the individual fighter. IMO I think training all aspects of fighting is good but you have to avoid becoming "a jack of all trades and a master of none". Personally I would rather be very skilled at striking in one system and know enough grappling to get by than knowing both grappling and striking to an intermediate level. But that's just my own opinion.

Not a new member per se. but I did miss this thread . My username is pretty boring, just my initials, D for Danielle, W for Williams, and a lil' x to make it up to three characters.

Not a restaurant but I love this little cafe called Wests in Loughborough. Really nice food and the staff are so friendly.

Chuck Norris VS. Bruce Lee
DWx replied to northerndragon's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I think I remember reading somewhere that Lee did learn some Jujitsu under Wally Jay. Would Norris have been able to take Lee to the floor though? IMHO I think Lee would have beaten Norris. He was incredibly fast, strong and totally committed. Don't get me wrong Chuck Norris is too, but I think Lee was even more so. -
My current car, a '74 1303s Beetle.. but not actually driven it yet because dad's fixing up some bits & pieces.

MLB Pitcher Says Martial Arts Helping Him Extend Career
DWx replied to Patrick's topic in Health and Fitness
This reminds me a bit of our local rugby squad. The Tigers actually have a Judo coach who I guess teaches them how to throw and be thrown. I guess MA would be good for baseball, teaches you how to swing harder . -
Congrats

Ah when you originally said MA I was looking at and referring to this one as I couldn't get the original link to work. So hopefully my earlier comment makes sense now.. Had a look round for the Chungdokwan team.. I think I'm looking at the right one now . They seem ok.. don't think they will get very far with it though.

ITF (Chang Ung's) Junior & Senior European Champs are in Croatia this week for anyone that's interested: http://itf.euro2008croatia.com My sister's competing and I've spent the last two weeks teasing her saying she'll get drawn against someone from the Czech republic (they nearly always win at patterns). They've not posted the draws yet but the schedule's up and some photos are on there already if anyone wants to take a look.

Hehe I suppose it must be my guilty conscious. Nearly all the injuries I've caused in training have been inflicted upon this one person. We always have a joke about it but I feel real bad. I didn't take your post northerndragon as a negative but I wanted to explain what happend so that no-one did get the wrong idea.

Identifying Korean Karate by sight?
DWx replied to Kagerou's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Wikipedia is a lifesaver! It knows all and sees all. I would never have managed it through all my coursework this year if it hadn't been for Wikipedia . I agree that the name and style itself don't matter really as long as you have a good instructor and you are being taught well. But on the other hand as a total newbie to MA it helps to know what style you are being taught so you can indeed go away and look up videos like Kagerou is doing. Some people need to do lots of extra practice at home to remember stuff and videos help to just prompt you. Also as a new guy to MA you can be pretty susceptible to McDojos where the head instructor has created his own MA so knowing what the style is called or where and what it comes from can be reassuring that you are learning something more than dancing about. -
Good Luck! Do you know what you'll have to do?

Identifying Korean Karate by sight?
DWx replied to Kagerou's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
The problem with the Korean styles is it gets very political; everyone has split off from everyone else and there are loads of different styles and amalgamations. Within Taekwondo alone there are several different Korean form sets and some schools even use traditional Japanese or Chinese forms instead. It might be easier to learn some of the names of the forms your school practices and then that will lead you to which Hyungs to search for. You may not find videos or pictures of exactly how you should perform the moves but you could begin roughly mapping everything out. If you could find out the names of even a few forms it should be pretty easy to go from there. Judging by the info on that website I would guess that you do do Chang Moo Kwan, you might want to take a look here: http://www.worldchangmookwan.com/index.php . But reading some of the forum posts there it appears different people do different forms.. -
I might get it. I like how it'll work out an exercise plan to cut a certain amount of weight you tell it. Also the yoga looks quite appealling. Bit on the expensive side for my budget though.

You are never too fat. Never too old. And definately never too dorky to be a martial artist. Sure you may not be able to things that younger, fitter people may be able to. But hey, does that really matter? The important thing is you enjoyed it. As has been reiterated in other threads, there are loads of people who have been in a similar situation that have started MA. I myself was overweight when I started (although that was at the tender age of 10) and maybe I still am to an extent so I sort of know how you feel. All you can do is be the best you can and if your best is lower than the best of someone else in your dojo it doesn't matter. I don't think its something that you're doing wrong, but more what your Sensei is doing wrong. It is his duty to teach his students and help them advance and if your stuck in this rut for several years I think he has failed. If you do go back to MA (I think you should if you enjoy it), maybe you ought to look at changing where you train. You'd probably have to start over but your not getting anywhere with an instructor who isn't helping your personal development. It doesn't matter how old, how overweight or whatever every instructor has a duty (IMO) to teach you something and help you develop. From what you posted its clearly not happening and maybe you need a new school. Good Luck and Welcome to the forums

Been there . Its so amazing that people that long ago were able to build something like that. Theres actors wandering around in full gladiator armour too. Rome as a place is so awesome itself. I would really love to go to Guyana. My mum emigrated from there and I would love to go and visit family I have never seen.

Hey don't make me feel worse than I do! Like I said it wasn't intentional and she was totally cool about it. It wasn't like I meant to cause her harm. We were pretty much toe-to-toe as I was coming in for some hand techniques. Then she attempted an axe kick stepping away and it landed on my shoulder as I stepped forward. Bearing in mind that I'm 5"10 and she's about 5"4. I didn't think she could get a kick up there when we were so close and once it was caught on my shoulder there wasn't much she could do about it. I'd already started to move forward and by the time we'd both stopped it was too late. I have the greatest respect for this person as she has taught me so much and this was just an accident that occurred in training. They happen. (My instructor nearly gave me concussion once but thats another story..). I hope I haven't given you the wrong impression but its not my mission to go around injuring my partners.

This the same as a SatNav? We have one but no-one uses it. My Dad travels loads and seems to be able to look at a map and tell where he should be going.
-
I see. I should look over that form again. Have you ever tried to defend an axe kick like that? Something to try, I think. Never when its at full speed. The base of your palms catch the kick around the ankle. If you look at videos of the form its the block that occurs just after you land from the two-directional kick.

DWx replied to Patrick's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
I keep re-running it to check that actually happened!! Imagine paying to see a fight like that and they knock each other out in under 10 secs!
