  1. If I remember right it was a sliding scale depending on how many months you paid for. It was around $100 a month for one month at a time and down to $80-$85 per month for the whole year. I think they also charge for promotion tests.
  2. try this one: http://www.wonkikwan.com/ It's a very small school and the instructor is from korea. His english isn't the best but his senior students help make sure you understand. I really liked it but found it to be a bit pricey. I think that this is his only job though so it may explain the pricing. He gave me a demonstration after my free lesson and talked to me about what I wanted out of hapkido. The students were very friendly and quite helpfull too.
  3. A different focus on techs, different forms, and a presence in the olympic games. Not to mention greater availiblity of schools (at least in my area). Man, I tried for a long time to find a hapkido school that was close enough and in the same price range as other school in the area but it was really hard!
  4. fight club was pretty straight foreward with it's fights if i remember correctly. not alot of flash and reasonable physical consequences. not a martial art movie(s) but the few fights in the godfather movies are quick and brutal.
  5. that's your opinion and your entitled to it but try saying a bit more to tell us why you feel that way next time Bows
  6. jam, and to quote Prodigal Son, "wail on his soft bits". heh heh, that was a cool way to put it Podigal
  7. same response as to a guy: Avoid if you can Block if you need Restrain if you must Beat down if you have no other choice LOL seriously, alot of women are tough as nails. dont do them any discredit or you'll end up with missing teeth.
  8. And you should remember the car jacker that tried to take that mini van from a judo team last year. They tied that SOB into a pretzel until the cops showed up! The post for that one is on here somewhere. Look around a bit. I also posted a link a while back to a associated press newspaper article where a pregnant TKD BB kicked the crap out of her knife weilding assailant. So in my opinion MA's with a sport side can be effective.
  9. It's from my university assigned e-mail. Last name plus number order of those letters on a particular server.
  10. My current card is a Radeon and it works great. No complaints so far. I upgraded from a Gforce 3 and saw quit a bit of improvement. The Gforce 3 was great in its day but things improve so fast now it made sense to upgrade.
  11. Ok I have a delema here. (link is no longer there, hence the edit) The arguement/delema is this: A website called real ultimate power described ninjas as 1) being mammals 2) fighting ALL the time, and 3) going nuts and killing people (It's a very funny website, wish I could find it again) Sooo... If ninjas are mammals and turtles are reptiles, how can a turtle be a ninja??? The mind staggers at the implications! LOL
  12. I'm a junior scientist at the University of MN. We do gene knockdown studies (among other things) in zebrafish. So, I spend half my day doing experiments and the other half directing undergrads and running our aquaculture facility. Our system now can hold an estimated 40,000 fish. I'm working on all the paperwork now for a promotion to Assistant Scientist which will help compensate for the extra duties I've picked up over the last 2 years. Do I like my job? Some days it's good, others it's terrible. It really depends on how bad the post docs are on my case about things I have no control over. I mean, if all water chemistry, temp, light cycle, and general health check out, there is NO WAY for me to make those fish mate if they dont want to! No matting means no experiments which leads to post docs getting upset. It's enough to make me go crazy some days. I have a degree in Fisheries and Wildlife biology and originally wanted to do population studies for the Department of Natural Resources or another organization of that type. The job market in that area is very tight right now (read always) so I took this job to get some experience and some money to pay bills. I gotta eat too! I don't know if I want to get into the DNR now, stay in the University setting and work through the ranks a bit, or become a zookeeper. How do you make millions? Send me $5 and I'll tell you the secret
  13. I wouldn't either, but people do kick that way as Sho-ju said he does. Just a different way of doing things and that's what I like to hear about So Sho-ju, what did you do leading up to that ill fated toe kick on the makiwara? How far had you progressed in your training? What type of conditioning did you do for your toes aside from the makiwara?
  14. Mead is honey wine. It is supposedly the oldest known alcoholic beverage. It's kinda sweet, a bit more potent than wine from grapes due to more sugar avalible for fermentaion, and takes a bit of getting used to. I only drink now and then and rarely more than a few beers. I do like whisky and gin though... Also, my roomates brother turned 21 last month so I sat him down for One bourbon, one scotch, one beer. Thought some of you might appriciate that.
  15. Depends on the target and the kick you use. I can see good times to use all three. Anyone ever see kicks done with the point of the toes? Seems like a good way of messing up your foot if you dont do it right but a potential for deep puncture wounds.
  16. I like the wood floors but training outside is fun too.
  17. I'd make sure your wall is more than just dry wall so you dont put holes in it. land lords tend to frown on holes in the wall...
  18. I looked at the USTU and WTF websites and didn't find anything there. that doesn't mean much though since the WTF website news is 2 years out of date.
  19. Where did you hear this? I'd be interested to learn if it's true as well.
  20. You know, the only time I really heard of any ITF/WTF animosity was when I joined this page and the ITFers started to make a big deal of it all. I think I'm going to take my own advice here, leave the political "mine is better than your bs" behind, and just go train. Good luck in your training no matter what organization or style you are from.
  21. All depends on the school. We were WTF with our basics derived from Song Moo Kwan, Ji Do Kwan, and Chang Do kwan. We did sport sparring for those that want to compete and for fun, but the self defense was all the really nasty stuff! Low kicks, sweeps, gouges, head butts, all sorts of hand strikes, locks etc... We spent more time on that sort of thing then sport sparring. I've seen some Purely sport schools for TKD and it's quite different. Not bad, just different. I can't comment on ITF as I have not seen an ITF school. One last thing Hwa-rang: How can saying someone "sucks" be construed in any way but negative? In the future try some constructive critisism, it tends to garner better feed back and lessens overall hostility on these boards. Good luck in your training, Pil Sung!
  22. That just sounds like nerves talking. Look at his response to you. He's either half joking or a bit nervous. Just agree on rules before you begin and if he doesn't want punches to the head now, bring them in at a later time, say 2nd or 3rd time you spar. He'll come around and probably even thank you for helping him grow as a fighter. tell us how it goes!
  23. Sprints, sit ups, push ups, running, biking... any of those will be good. Don't try to learn from a book. It's bound to give you bad habits that will be hard for you to correct later. Later on you can use a book to review but it's best to wait until taught by an instructor.
  24. What are your thoughts on solutions to the current state of affairs?
  25. Hey Erik, I was looking into Soo Bahk Do myself and wondering if you've found any thing. Where in MN are you from? I think that makes 3 of us from MN now.
