I've always considered Shorin Ryu practioneers as the "Old Foggies" in the neighborhood personally. And me one of the oldest foggies I know! (figured I'd better say that before somebody else did)

Hmmmm...well, everything you need to open a large commercial martial arts business. Note, I didn't say dojo. I guess if you're goal is to make a living off the martial arts, which is perfectly fine, then this might be OK. I don't know...I like the more down to earth sort of dojo experience better than the flashy, big business sort of thing. Personal preference I guess. How much is this college going to cost you if you don't mind my asking?
-
Instructor college? That's a new one on me. Is it "style specific" ... meaning for a specific system? Is there a cost associated with it? And why do you have to go to an Instructor college?

Being FEMALE is causing a slight problem...
Shorinryu Sensei replied to lilsempai's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Yeah...I noticed that too. Hmmmmm...well, moving your body depends on what you're objective is when using a weapon. You don't want excessive, non-functional movment, but there are some movements with the body that are beneficial to the movement of the weapon. I guess all I can suggest here is to get used to the "funny looks" and crack jokes about them....uhhh...the looks I mean. -
Coka-a-Cola and other soft drinks?
Shorinryu Sensei replied to ckd-student's topic in Health and Fitness
I'll have a ~Coke~ now and then...maybe 1-2/week. There's no nutritional value in a pop. Not that I'm all that health conscience, I just don't like them as much as I used to. -
Since you're asking about Korean forms, perhaps the Korean forum might be a better place to pose this question instead of the Japanese/Okinawan forum.

Like everybody else has said (anybody here an echo?), it varies between system to system, dojo to dojo. Here's mine: Dan Ranks 10th Red 7th-9th - Red/White 1st-6th - Black Kyu Ranks 1st - Brown w/black stripe running through center 2nd - Brown with one black stripe at end of belt 3rd - Brown 4th - Blue w/ black stripe on end of belt 5th - Blue 6th - Purple 7th - Green w/ black stripe on end of belt 8th - Green 9th - Yellow 10th-White

Black Belt Census
Shorinryu Sensei replied to parkerlineage's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Same here, plus 3 in TKD and I've never taken a single class in it! Don't ask... -
I've seen to many people rely on groin, mouth and other forms of protection and because of that protection, they don't use their training to protect themselves as well as they should. I leave it up to my students to use what protection they do, or don't want to use. Under 18 are required to wear groing protection...period. Myself, I don't use anything other than what I was born with, and what training and skills I possess. And yes, I've been nailed more than once.

What do I use? My hands for blocking, and my head for dodging. Really, I don't even wear a groin cup (he says in his high, squeaky voice)

I'll start looking around to see if I can find a suitable canidate and do some research on this subject. The line forms over here------> -
Being FEMALE is causing a slight problem...
Shorinryu Sensei replied to lilsempai's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
That is a legitimate technique, but it is not as strong and secure as holding it between your arm and ribs. Well, just so everybody knows, this isn't the way that ALL systems do it. We, for example, don't turn/rotate/move our hips to generate more power (leaves you exposed and open to attack) and we do stand square to our opponent oftentimes. Different strokes.... -
Woops. My mistake. In that case, welcome to the Shorin Ryu family! Well bud...I guess the first thing we'll have to work on in June is gender recognition. Maybe you've been in California to long?

Do you know which branch of Shorin Ryu you'll be taking? Sensei's name?

cathal has spoken!!!

Go for the stainless steel ones They'll last forever and never rust.

Well, I had no instructor training per se. The closest thing I had was when we got a new student in my sensei's class, either Pat (one belt higher than me) or myself would take them aside and teach them the basics. However, during my training with my origional sensei, I was a college student learning to be a teacher, so I guess you could say I had 4 years of intensive training.

A shorin ryu school? COOL!!! Welcome to the Okinawan brotherhood!

Forgive me if the question is inappropriate for this forum (or thread) but those sound like interesting stories if you cared to elaborate, Shorinryu Sensei... I'll give yo uthe Readers Digest condensed version. The rifleman in the bank was a friend of my fathers. He was going through a bad divorce and was mentally unstable. He had a single shot .22 cal rifle and I could tell that it wasn't cocked. I had several minutes to look at it and determine this. I simple talked to him..told him I was Earl's son..he recognised me and when I offered my hand to shake his my other hand raised the rifle to the ceiling and my opther hand twisted it out of his hands. I passed the rifle off to another guy and pretty much held the man losely until the cops came ijnto the bank. he wasn't trying to rob the place, just needed someone to talk to him. Not a big deal really. The fight against 3 guys was shortly after my father died and I had been cleaning out his house. I took a break and went and had a beer when 3 guys stopped me in the parking lot as I was leaving. Words were exchanged, the middle guy cocked his arm back in a classic haymaker and went down with his hand still back when I nailed him in the nose. 2nd guy to my left stepped in and I front snap kicked him in the solar plexis and he went down. 3rd guy looked at his friends and didn't want to play. It was a perfect setup for me, and wasn't that big of a deal, but both situations I probably would have been justified using deadly force.

You want to wear the same sort of clothing Bruce Lee did? Check the retro shops....ask them for anything gaudy from the late 1960's and early 1970's. Think Austin Powers style...that's about it. Heck, I know a guy that still has all that stuff in his closet...bell bottoms, flowing sleeves with flowers on them, wide lapels on the jackets...your origional platform shoes. I'll see if he wants to sell it. Retro stuff is pretty spendy though I think, plus shipping it to the UK.

The closest they come to the chest is along either side of your rib cage...I can't imagien that is what she is talking about...but then again...??? Same thing though...they come to the sides of the rib cage, not the front. -

Shorinryu Sensei replied to lilsempai's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Well, I hadn't thought about "the obstacles" (man, I need to get a DATE! ), but I don't know of any nunchauku or bo techniques that would be causing any contact in that area. Those weapons are all used outside the center of the body, not the inside like a sai, tonfa or kama might be. Those weapons I can see being a possible problem for those that are more endowed. -
Testing, a good thing or a bad thing?
Shorinryu Sensei replied to taiji fajin's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Personally, as a sensei, I would be offended at this method of testing. It would send a clear message to me that they (the higher authority in your system) had no confidence in my ability to test and promote somone. If that is the case, then I would not want to belong to that system or organization. My personal opinion anyway. -

You hit yoru chest with a bo and nunchauku? How the heck are you managing doing that? Describe, if you can, what leads up to hitting yourself please. -
Correct! I always ask new students if they have any physical limitations that I need to be aware of. Depending on yoru sensei, this shouldn't slow you down much...if at all. My instructor wouldn't take students with physical limjitatio0ns, which I always thought was a pile of doo-doo..and he was never to happy when I did. Different philosophy I guess.
