  1. I met a guy at my gym who is a Wing Chun practitioner and I'm thinking about starting. The classes are at the Davenport Y. Any one here wouldn't have anymore info would they? He says he is several generations removed from Sifu Yip Man. What do you think about this? Thanks. _________________ Semper Fi [ This Message was edited by: Knuth on 2002-06-12 22:34 ]
  2. How the hell do you guys have enough time to start a relationship in a dojang? What ever happened to training? If we were talking then we had to much energy an had to burn it off with some more sparring. A few months of bloody noses tought us two things, how to guard the head and not to talk.
  3. It is EXTREMLY diffilcult to break the knee but you can tear ligaments pretty easily by kicking from the outside of the knee to the inside. Any other direction will still do damage but going in this way does the most. I had always believed that and after talking to several doctors who specialize in sports medicene tell me all about the ligaments and atachment my beliefs were reinforced.
  4. I'll second with what G95 says. I really like good books just to supplement my training and to learn about what is out there. It's alot easier to become more well rounded with these suplements if there are very few schools around your area, expecially if your instructer is open to watching them. Then hopefully he can seperate what is usefull from what is not and learn something too.
  5. What ever you get make sure it is supported with chains, not straps. I have bought and thrown out 3 everlast bags that use straps. I like everlast bags and the ones with chains are so much better. Canvas or leather with a relativly hard filler is recomended. Good luck with your purchase.
  6. FYI: If any one is trying to loose weight than don't drink gatorade, drink water, lots and lots of water. I try to take in at least a half a galon if not an entire galon a day. If you have dark urine than you don't have enough fluids in you. For real intense workouts gatorade is OK. It is everywhere and tastes good so alot can be taken in but always drink water too.
  7. Being a powerlifter I usually disagree with what body-boys:D say most of the time but I must almost completly agree with Ti-Kwon-Leap. The two points I think he his wrong at are the rep scheme and big calves. Even as a power lifter I go as high as 25 reps for several weeks and then slowly work down to the 1 rep max. If calves a functional then they are big. Very seldom are small calves as strong as they can be. They are one muscle that is often forgotten and complained about. Work them. One more thing. If you are only doing exercices like pushups, pullups, and dips, etc then you should do them everyday. I don't believe you can overtain with bodyweight exercices ony with weighttraining and I would recomend starting.
  8. You can diet all you want and not loose a pound. Cardio and weight training are both necisary in the weight loss game.
  9. I found week 4 of the category II to be a perfect starting place last fall during westling season. I didn't advance much beyond that because it was supplemental to practice and weightlifting.
  10. They are lazy, to much time on the pc, to easy to get faty foods, etc. There is no one answer but it all boils down to the obese person. Nobody makes them fat but them selves. BTW where abouts in CT are you located? I used to live/train there and my mom owned a gym there too.
  11. The beast way to streangthen your lower back is to deadlift, period. Nothing, I mean nothing comes close to it. It is important to streangthen them so youe body is "even." You can't move as efficiently as possible if you are lopsidded. You must streangthen your entire body, not just parts. From your calves to your traps.
  12. I was picked on in middle school, alot too. It got kind of excessive one day and I kicked 3 kid's asses who went to far and I have never been teased since. No one was seriously hurt BTW and now the other kids and I get a long fairly well. P.S. My parents have split and my dad mentally abused me yet I have never thought about murdering anyone. Those kids were fvcked up because they were insane, not because of society. Deal with it.
  13. At point blank range I think I would do everything I could to take the attacker down, wrist grab, single leg take down, etc. Past seven or so yards I think I would use the magical tecniques of run-fu.
  14. Try http://www.awma.com for supplies and videos. Pretty generick stuff but they should work for a beginer. Good luck.
  15. Eye of the Tiger: Who have you been talking to? The majority of the boxing comunity didn't think there was a snow balls chance in hell that Tyson would win. I really enjoyed the fight. I loved watching "Iron" Mike as a sparring partner.
  16. I kia before a match to startle my partner. I find it is really effective against less experienced fighters. It can also be used to focus power into a move and it really creates a mindset that "I'm at war here and I'm going to win." I know some people who do it right before their move and it tips their opponet off and loose because of it. I don't think it should be done during every move but against two equilly skilled fighters it may give an upper hand to one if used in moderation.
  17. I've always found that the fights in Pride are better than those in the UFC. Not all of them but most.
  18. Congragulations! How did the fights go? Did the other fighters do what you thought they would do?
  19. Even if Lewis is boring he won. Thats what fighting is all about, getting the job done.
  20. This is a great site. The best one I have come across.
  21. To compliment the UFC post I thought I would start one up asking who your fav pride fighter is. Mine is Heath Hearing.
  22. Bretty101: How much Creatine are you taking in? You might want to slow down a bit to reduce crampings. Also, You do get what you pay for in most instances but there is lee-way with it (you don't need the most expensive).
  23. In some instances it is dangerous. But without regular exposure to it you do become weak. When a situation arises where pain is inevitable a person who can tolerate pain will survive. If a person hardly ever experiences pain than that person will go crying home to his mother ever time he stubs his toe or gets a black eye. There is a certain amount of pain invloved with makwara training, full contact sparring, and dateing, but people continue to do it without complaining .
  24. When it comes to Martial Arts who influences or inspires you the most?
