  1. I bought this and now Im stronger than Bruce Lee. LOL ^_^. Seriously though. About the only possitive I can see with this is letting your kid see if they might want to give Karate a try with out having to go through the troubles of testing out at a real dojo. Less expensive I guess. ^_^Although It would make a great gag gift for my Sensei this christmas. LOL ^_^
  2. Well I found a cheap pair for about 25 or so. That's probably the best its gonna get. Just shop around awhile and the main thing to worry about other than the wrapping comming off is making sure the weapon is properly balanced. Since Sai are made of solid metal they will theoretically last forever as long as you give it good basic maintenance and don't do anything foolish with it like stabbing the ground or something. Hope this helps.
  3. Anyone gota link to a site? I have never seen this one; but I keep running into it when reading.
  4. The trick is to learn to fight using your weight to your advantage. I don't need speed because I have learned how to fight strategically with the limitations of my body.
  5. Im not sure its just an accent thing but my system has a Heion 5 instead of Neon. Accent maybee?
  6. It also might be a good idea to work the punching bag to get more control.
  7. Ill bet you anything the attendance of that class doubled. People believe anything someone tell's them.
  8. Ive got the same problem seeing as howIm a big guy and most of the people are kinda small however Ive found that the best way to train is to work on your speed and tequnique. hit em and get out as quick as you can. You don't need as much streingth as youd think if you work the tecniques properly and they can take a blow. There not made of glass. Sure don't beat em into the ground; but there tougher than they look. Hopes this helps.
  9. I agree with PAL. Focus on the techniques themselves rather than your strength and size. Also when practicing on your own do the techniques slowly and check your stances each time. When you get more comfortable then increase your speed without sacrificing tecnique.
  10. Not to change the subject or anything; but Ive got a pair of Sai and noticed that the wrapping is beggining to peel. Didn't start showing untill a couple of weeks after I bought them. Its not very noticeable right now; but in a few months it's probably gonna come off. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on replacing the wrapping. I was considering using the same wrapping used for a golf club. Id like to know if that would be a wise decision or if not what would be a good alternative.
  11. Id advise to study very basic hitting point's ie nose chest, groin and working only on basic hitting tequniques like open hand and closed hand. A quick front snap kick is also easy; but effective. If anything remember to keep up some kind of a guard even if its only a boxing stance. I don't really want to get too involved with this; but if your really woried about it then keep to very basic tecniques that are very simple to execute, and work on speed as much as you posibly can. Its unlikely that in two months your going to have that much of a difference in your fighting abbility; but I believe this is probly the best way to maximise your effectiveness with the amount of time.
  12. Well actually no; but there were a few times latter in his life when he wanted to back down; but the opponent wouldn't let him. I recall when, it was either the emperors son or cousin, (I can't remember, its been awhile since I heard the story) challenged him and he refused; but the guy made him fight so Musashi only broke one of his legs instead of killing him. Sure he never lost a match; but there were some that he really didn't want to fight and would have avoided if he could have.
  13. Thanks for starting this thread cause Im dealing with a situation like this. Ive trained in Karate and im almost at Black now and Im wanting to join a Judo school; but Im not sure if I should ask for my Sensei's permision. Im kinda woried about what he would say.
  14. Just my two cents; but Ive heard that the length of Nunchacku should be about the same length as the palm of your hand.
  15. You did the right thing. I don't know if this kid had some kind of a grudge against your school (it sounds as though hes studied up abit on it before he came); but you never really know if he was just wanting to spar or hurt someone. We had a Black belt who was invited to another dojo a few years back and apparently while he was there they must have ganged up on him. Were not sure cause he didn't talk to us much about it; but he ended up quiting about a month afterwards. Miyamoto Musashi wrote in his book of five rings that a true warrior does not need the approval of others to know that he is strong. By his brasingly doing that shows that he isn't very mature about it. Don't feel bad that you didn't accept his callenge cause that would have just put you down to his level. Only fighting when its necessary is not cowardace; but the true way of the martial arts.
  16. If im not mistaken aren't tiles made to be just stacked on top of each other? Unless were talking about two different types. I haven't been in the breaking buisness for that long; but everytime ive seen it theyre just stacked on top of each other and because there already arced they don't need anything cause theyre already spaced out.
  17. Think my Sensei would probably want to see this too. People are ignorant.
  18. There's a weapon called a Suruchin that is used in Okinawa that involves a couple of rocks tied together and is swung around. So this idea is nothing new to the MA's. I do think its best to weigh the pros and cons of the weapon as every weapon has streingths and weeknesses. Id be best used at a mid range distance (approx 6-10 feet from you) and can hit with some reasonally hard force. Its also very hard to block. On the flipside it would be pretty hard to manage in close Proximity. Except for grapling moves it wouldn't be very effective in that case.
  19. "Blackbelt TV"? Thats awesome. i didn't know they even had something like that. Martial arts shows outside of entertainment are very hard to find so good luck with that.
  20. so the instructors train you outside in the gardens. Do they charge any fees?
  21. sure will do.
  22. Come to think of it your right. Youd think that with people punching and throwing kicks at each other there would be serious injuries all the time; but in the time ive been training Ive only seen one really bad injury and that was on this guys knee. (the guy just got out of surgery just a few weeks earlier and being the highly inteligent person he was decided hed join a new Karate school.) I wonder why that works out that way?
  23. Of course its not too late. Im overweight and doing MA and Im one of highest ranking students. You can learn to use your weight to yjour advantage with more experience.
  24. this is interesting. The Japaniese do believe that your soul is housed in your stomach.
  25. Thats exactly what my problem is. Thank you alot. This is what I really need to do.
