  2. over the years tkd has developed some hand techniques and stuff. i love learning about the history and philosiphy of martial arts.
  3. search around, visit the dojos and ask the instructors on their opinion. they might all say the style is good for defence. if you still have some questions, ask the senseis or watch how the students spar. if they have good defence, it might be a good idea to look for more info on the place or style. you can also ask to see some self defence techniques that they learn and apply.
  4. try to catch up with him and apoligize if you can and explain what happened and why. if he is a good person, he will understand.
  5. i practise shotokan on my own time and in the dojo, and i weight train in phys ed class and sometimes during lunch.
  6. loving the posts guys. keep it comming.
  7. ahhh the troubles of a new belt. what better way to soften it then to roll it up a couple of times, wash it, then rool it up a couple of times more? don't forget not to shrink it unless its too long.
  8. my sensei sometimes gives us quizzes on japanese terminology and respect/rules of the dojo and martial arts. i ace everyone of them . also, i don think you should get them to put stars or marking on their uniforms or belts. it makes them look to flashy and less respectful.
  9. what about the cocky students that would use it for fighting?
  10. i don't know if jump kicks are required for my dojo but my sensei usually teaches advanced techniques as a treat when there is a small class or everyone is working hard.
  11. i don't know if it is even legal to buy them where i live. if they are, id buy some foam practising ones.
  12. thanks for letting me know.
  13. my dojo had a self defence seminar with an excellent sensei. i forget his name but he was good. i love seminars. in one, we learned a kata from a different style. it was interesting to learn. i think it was called seisan. i forget what style of karate it was but it seemed like a close range style.
  14. im testing for brown too in december. its going to be a real jump from purple to brown.
  15. i dont understand what you mean by paranoia?
  16. my dojo has a class for brown and black belts. i will be in it if i pass my brown belt test in december.
  17. From the videos ive watched over the years, TKD seems to be missing alot of things that shotokan does in techniques. So they are both different. TKD is modified from shotokan so it takes less time to learn(without having to learn all the technical components shotokan has). Plus they added alot of kicks to strengthen the legs. If you read some history of tae kwon do, you would find out that they have alot of kicks because the hands were made for art and didn't want them damaged or used as weapons.
  18. i would give him whatever he wants and then get the heck out of there. if he didnt want anything i would create a distraction by gasping and looking to the side so he will look there. then i would attack him to the ground to neutralize him and then take the sword if i can or run away.
  19. i learned how to use nunchaku by making them out of knex pieces and a small chain. i learned on my own and it looks pretty good lol. anybody else learn how to use a waepon this way or using broom sticks and etc?
  20. ive seen "choosing a martial art school" articles that say to look for one where certain ranks train together. example: black belt classes, green and purple and so on. it doesnt matter. its actually good to train with mixed ranks because then you can learn from the higher ranks and help the lower ranks. you can even learn stuff from lower ranks which is not uncommon. i think training with mixed ranks is better than just training with your own rank but its good to occaisionally train with your own ranks in seperate classes. what do you think?
  21. in kanku dai or gankaku, you can do a jump front kick which the knee comes up and then you jump of the back leg and front snap kick. or you can do a nidan geri and for that, you kick when the knee comes up and the other leg kicks too.
  22. This wasn't supposed to be a discussion thread. It was supposed to be for adding your own ideas on what a true martial artist it. Please get back on topic.
  23. when ur watching tv and you see a bully fighting or someone punching the guy, you think to yourself "I can easily block that!".
