L0G1C has a point, Hip-Hop instrumentals have gotten me into a rhythm of practicing. I'll try to do one technique every bar non-stop for a song. Evne when i stay in horse stance, i use a song as a timer. like, "well, i know this song is 2 min, so lets do horse stance until the song ends."

One thing i would do is realize, my girlfriend may not be a black belt or even a MA, but anyone can kick someone in the groin. Eurocentrically, It may be gentlemenly to send the woman to safety, but i'd rather my girlfriend jump in the fight with key brass knuckes and groin-kicking. I'd rather fight 2 on 2 b/c if they knock me out, they'll completely over power my girlfriend. If its 2 on 2, she can deliver some pain as well. Moral: Fights are not a gentlemenly affair. If your girl can scrap, let her fight too. -and- teach yur girlfriends some MA. It'll really help to have someone who knows something.

You know your friends strengths and weaknesses. When i spar with my friends, i know their abilities and they know mine. Also, we know that if it gets too crazy, we can say "stop." and it will end.

Drunken MA
Tef replied to Paula's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I made the horrible mistake of doing MA while really drunk b/c i thought i would be able to do drunken Bok-Fu. Wrong. All that happened was that i fell over a lot and found every strike i did hilarious. As most say, it's about constantly moving your center of gravity so the opponent has little clue where you're going. Drunken Style katas look soooo frikkin' dope. I saw a guy do one with a gian (chinese straight sword), i would have killed for a video camera. -
Or Tony Jaa (he loves flipping onto and over people. Go see that new Tony Jaa movie "tom-yum-goong/ the protector" It's so crazy.)

I find that confidence is actually a pretty big factor. You have to keep trying it. I've only done a complete kip twice in my life. I'm 17. Also, when you do the kip, kick the legs out, not up. At that point, it's all in the abs to pull yur upper body up.

I agree with the person that said "unless you have mediation training, stay out." I've seen a couple classmates at my school try to pull a doctor phil and get stomped out. Personally, i would have notified a security guard to walk into the vicinity in case something did jump off. Then, it's the security's problem.

Go super-saiyan and scrape all those fools. <-- Me <---Them So joking... First of all, who is stupid enough to be a crazy place that late. The latest i've been out in a crazy neighborhood was like 8:00 in East Oakland, with my MA friend. Also, Even if i had my MA friend with me, we're not dumb enough to scrap with 5 fools. First, Get the [heck] out of there. Forget that fool. Call the cops to get help for him. Look, you act the fool in the hood, you get treated like a fool. "You might get a childish bullet in your childish brain" - LeAlan "Ghetto Life 101: Our America." Second. Sit down in your couch, turn on the TV and zone out. Maybe even laugh at his folly. Fool.

Situation 1: do an attack to his/her eyes. getting poked in the eyes pretty much makes you forget about anything. keep hitting pressure points until you can push him/her off. Then run! Situation 2: Hit the groin or the shin. Keep hitting. If you can, go with the flow and fall back onto the attacker. s/he will cushion your fall if s/he is behind you. Then, wail on that fool like its nothing.

I would have to agree with a lot of you who explain the many variables. Every MA is not ridiculously skilled and every body builder has no fighting skill. Personally, I find that most people i know who body build can't fight. This one kid, I'll call him "Tom," does Crew (boat rowing) and sadly takes steriods, and is pretty ripped. He got into a fight with a kid named "Sam," who has no professional fighting experience other than street fighting and is not muscular at all. Tom gets smashed on in about 10 seconds. Moral of the story: At Berkeley High, buff fools get scraped cuz they think they all that. and Tom is a weakling.

Heh, reminds me of an almost fight I had. I made the mistake of wearing a tourney T-shirt out on the town with my (then) girlfriend. Some drunk wanted to take issue with it, and did the whole drop into a MA stance (Not bad, actually), and give with a loud bruce lee type "KIIAAAIOOOHWEAAAWWOOOOOWA!" I stood there smiling at him with my arms crossed, and when he finished his posturing, I just said "Anytime you're ready, let me know". Somehow he got the message and just walked away. Well, reeled away, anyway. In sparring I generally don't even hear my opponent's kiaps, I'm too focused on his movement. Aodhan I had a similar experience. Sadly the drunk guy was a master of drunken boxing. JK A tactic i find useful is look very calm and stoic to your opponent, like there is no fight, then strike hard and fast. A guy looking really intense and hyphy is sorta predictable. I once sparred with this one guy at my school who insisted on using Muay Thai on me. Fortunately, He kept Kiai-ing really loud and wore himself out after about twenty strikes. I had to excuse myself b/c every kiai sounded like a donkey's bray. "Eeeyoiiiaaahh!!"

Defense against School Scuffles
Tef replied to ShotokanKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'm surprised that no one on this thread has suggested the best way to avoiding bullies: a group of friends! my high schools pretty rough and I'm a medium height kid (5' 5") so what do i do to escape an inevitable pounding? hang out with friends that are all over 6 feet. I'm always with at least one of them all day just in case one of us gets jumped. Depending on what kind of school you go to: tell the teacher. In a large school, it probably wont do you any good at all, tho. If push comes to shove-don't hesitate to stomp him out. and if multiple bullies come your way looking for trouble, run away. You don't want to be the subject of an obituary of a novel called "The Lament of the Kid who got knocked the F out cuz he was trying to be overly brave." -
I fought against a bully today
Tef replied to GhostFighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
first thing. This conflict was completely avoidable. if the bully was yelling at you, ignore him. If he begins to swing, to a MLK/ Ghandi and take it: you may lose face in the immediate moment, but the administrators will see you were only a complete victim rather than a person who fought back. Plus, a quick beating might hurt, but as someone on this board said: you can guarantee on getting hurt in a fight. second thing is: Pray your sensei hasn't read this post. For many reasons. -
The best kick for self defense
Tef replied to bushido_man96's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I agree with you all for the most part, but i think that the more advanced a kick is, the greater the risk is of it failing. I would love to your a double crescent kick or a flying wheel kick to disable an opponent, but the best kicks i've heard work are your beginning kicks like low-RH, side kick, rear kick or front kick. Even wheel kick. luckily, i haven't been mugged, but i think the knees would not be my primary target. In the moment, i might forget the correct foot position and break my foot, then would get stomped out and maybe killed. I like to assume that this fool is going crazy and i have one strike before he kills me. My first target, if it was a man, would be the groin. There are a) no bones to break your foot on and b) very very very few men who can take a strong kick straight to the groin and keep going. If its a woman, I'd get close and use a hard strike to a pressure point. -
I don't know about other states, but in California, there's an excessive force law. It's sorta like what you might learn in Dojo: you end the fight to the exact point that your agressor is no longer able to fight and then you run away. The only time the Jury can penalize anyone Martial artist or not is when they continue to beat up their aggressor after the point of fight-ending. If a person does that, then the roles are switched in the eyes of most juries. Although, i will admit that some jury members might ask the question: "if you're a MA, couldn't you have just done (enter a really ignorant stereotype of MA here)?"

About the style(s) used in "the karate kid"
Tef replied to Azula's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think the crane stance kick is not only flashy but can work in tandem with a good strike. maybe you could fake a kick, then do a crane beak strike to temples or eyes. The opponent would probably block the kick with a downward block because s/he watched too many Karate kid movies. If s/hes not a BB in cinemaphotography-ryu, narrativeimprobability fu or ignorance do, you're kinda screwed. -
Can you separate buddhism form Martial Art or can't you?
Tef replied to yireses's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Actually, i think that MA and buddhism completment each other. For example, you don't need any things other than another person in order to learn martial arts. And most MA weapons are made from natural things. personally, MA has made me more interested in Buddhism because of the things i've learned at dojo. I'm currently looking for a temple in my city. -
fav MAs: Jackie Chan (i just saw the original Drunken Master choreographer Yueng Woo-Ping. He's so dope.) Tony Jaa: Loved Ong-Bak and Tom-Yum Goong. He's just crazy. Gordon Liu: Masta Killa, that's all i have to say Fu Sheng: Shaw Bros. work is dope. Sammo Hung: So underrated... Liu(?) Kar Leung: Is there anything he can't do? personally, i think Bruce lee and Jet Li are a bit overrated. I'll give you: Once Upon A Time In China The Mask Romeo Must Die Enter the Dragon Return of the Dragon (i haven't seen a lot of bruce lee, tho)

annoying sayings and questions in the martial arts!
Tef replied to B 2 DA RYAN's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
that reminds me of when people get surprised when i tell them i do MA becuz im latino. Also, my favorite thing to do when people hold weak crane stances is say: "that's nice, now lets see who can hold it longer."
