You can get leather arm guards to protect your arm from the drwawstring, very useful things. Is use of the wooden longbow included in 'traditional' archery?

Let me guess. It would also be possible of repairing itself to a fairly extensive degree. It could improve itself by picking up new modes as necessary, or increasing its power. It could be used equally in offense or defense. It could be used in either lethal or non-lethal situations equally well. Am I getting close?

the fear before of fighting
ckdstudent replied to blood talon's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
What medical bills? We have the NHS remember. I'm terrified of the legal system, in a fight I know that I'll only lose if I do something wrong. In a court case I'll lose if the other guy has more money and can hire a better lawyer, and most of the country has more money than me. I want trial by combat back. -
Considering the sheer number of pressure points there are supposed to be I'm amazed that its possible to hit someone and not hit one of their pressure points.

We teach new techniques at each belt level, and use it as a judge of how long someone has been training, at the intermediate and senior levels it also includes the rough estimate of ability, possibly not much use for people in other martial arts but we find it useful.

If you're in any situation where you need a weapon repaired fast you're in trouble. The best method is probably prayer.
-
Actually I've only seen this once, but there's really not much you can do about it. The skin on your soles toughens up to be some of the most resistant in your body, walking around in bare feet more of the time might help a little.

the fear before of fighting
ckdstudent replied to blood talon's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The better man ends the fight quickly using less force, or better none at all. The man who is going to be charged with excessive force is the one who goes one step further. The man who tries to match their force is the average man who'll probably make a successful plea for self-defense. -
Better name for a book I'd have to say, then you could have the film of the book.

Slipping is quite effective, simply torque your shoulders off to one side, pulls your head out of the way of the punch and sets you up for a counter quite nicely. Then there's weaving, bring your bodyweight either forwards or backwards, bend your knees (not your back), rock your bodyweight over and stand back up. Again it sets you up for a nice counter. Other than that all I can really suggest is simply stepping away (which is fairly slow compared to the dodging) or blocking.

I've been in one or two, maybe I should rephrase though. Here in the south and outside the big cities the worst you'll generally come across is a chain, mainly because the nearest place to buy a knife is London and people looking for fights tend to just stay up in London to find their victims.

Why do you need ten rounds or more for self defence?

*sniff* No one's heard of my art! Waah! Anyway it's Choi Kwang Do, the art of Grandmaster Choi (no relation to General Choi, although there is a connection).

I've been in a few too many for my own liking, partly due to the college I went to, and partly due to the fact that I was the quiet one. First one was a guy who attacked me with a chain round his fist. Caught me on the cheekbone which kind of suprised me, but I didn't feel it until after I'd blocked his second try and hit him a few times. Then his friend ran off, and he staggered. When I got to the car the world started to spin. Second one was a guy who tried to jump me from behind as I was walking back from college to home. He and some others had been following me and yelling insults, then I heard running, looked round, and gave him a side-kick to the chest as he started to jump. Then ran, they didn't follow. It did work for me, and I study CKD.

the fear before of fighting

Courage is often misunderstood, as has been said by many people courage is doing the right thing no matter what the circumstances. I still don't quite follow how this got linked in with fighting and warfare. The greatest courage you'll find is the person who'll walk away from a fight after being mortally offended because its the right thing to do. -
Blackbelt Test
ckdstudent replied to monkeygirl's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Testing tips: 1. Be relaxed and confident 2. Take lots of water 3. Try and arrange a lift there and back, driving while nervous isn't a good idea 4. Don't panic 5. Take a first aid kit -
Mandatory Training for Flight attendants
ckdstudent replied to Pacificshore's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Metal detectors can't stop them, but think about it. After 9/11 hijackers are no longer assumed to be simply holding hostages, passengers and crew will fight them no matter what because there's the same chance that they'll die either way. -
Not particularly, when you get into a fight idds are the worst you'll be facing is a chain, with a knife being the absolute limit. People always forget all of those little legal 'weapons' that they carry every day.
-
Now a taser, one of those I want.

If someone wants to kill you with a knife you'll never see it, same with a gun. If you see the weapon then they're out for something other than to kill you.

Getting back into the Martial Arts
ckdstudent replied to KickChick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
If its any consolation the oldest student in CKD is 83, she's also a sheriff, has her daughter and grandaughter both doing Choi, and also does waterskiing as a hobby. -
the fear before of fighting
ckdstudent replied to blood talon's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Look angry, but don't be it. As for being afraid of fighting that's a good thing. Fighting is not a good idea and should be avoided whenever possible. When its unavoidable though the fear tends to dissipate rather rapidly to be replaced by survival instinct and training. -
My first class, hmm, I was one of five white belts in the school, and we made up the entirity of the school. A friend of mine was the first student in, and I was the fifth. Other than that though I really don't remember much of it, it was a while ago.

Ahem, some of us live in these 'restricted countries', we're not all from the states. My point was that you can make the argument both ways, either say that you should make weapons available for personal protection, or that you should restrict them for the same reasons. Interestingly every time I've heard either case argued people have brought up the same points.

I changed my mind, I wanna create the kid-chucks. Put a small, well trained kid on the end of a rope and swing around. Sorry, just watched Jet Li's The Enforcer.
