  1. Welcome aboard!
  2. Competitive runners put in a lot of miles. Increasing your mileage base will help your one mile time. However, you have to ensure you are also doing speed work to avoid slowing down.
  3. Far too few small businesses take action against stealing employees - fear of bad publicity being a key reason. The result is that the bad eggs then are free to do the same to the next employer. I would fire such an employee on the spot, and seek both civil and criminal redress. Surely there is another person ready to step up into an instructor role.
  4. I assume you mean a stationary bike. Sure, they're effective. The problem is that they are incredibly boring for most people. As a result, they end up being high priced places to hand clothes. Get one used - there are a lot available.
  5. What was up with Mr. Red Sweater? Hey, let me help you get beat up!
  6. I would say that a national TV audience merits at least as much professionalism as a MA class. A dirty mouth is just another aspect of having/not having self control. Most people with mouths like that manage not to talk that way in front of their mother.
  7. Are you saying that you can do 20-40 pushups outside but only 1-4 inside? If this is true, it has to be something in your mind.
  8. Get a weapon yourself, or run.
  9. Buy used or borrow.
  10. Ask both senseis what they think. I personally would tell the new guy to stuff it if he/she had a problem with sticking with your old style as well.
  11. The best & most painful finger locks are not pulling the fingers back, but pushing them forward beyond the joint's normal range of motion (making the circle of a closed finger smaller)
  12. I strongly disagree also. This is a myth, thoroughly disproved by many many professional fighters.
  13. Certainly doing XMA would not preclude someone from being a good martial artist, but the XMA art just looks more like gymnastics than a fighting art. That's not good or bad, it just is. If you want to train in this type of thing, go for it, but I wouldn't expect it to translate well back into improved fighting skills.
  14. Who tries to get 6 yo's to pay attention for 90 minutes? That's crazy! I think it's up to you to decide if you like the instructor's methods or not. Mine tried to make a big life lesson out of my son's failed test & I thought he had gone too far. I don't need a karate instructor to raise my boy.
  15. That sounds like an accident waiting to happen! You better have a strong string!
  16. If you find that your class is too geared for competition, maybe you should look for another school. I have found videos to be a poor imitation for class instruction.
  17. Maybe he has specific examples from his past, but to think that TKD kicks are somehow "worse" would I think be a mistake.
  18. If you want to get stronger, you should lift weights. You can find bodyweight exercises that give great benefits, but it will be easier with weights. Only if you are trying to stay in a weight class or do something that requires stretgth to weight lilek gymnastics will you need to do things much differently.
  19. Heavy bag work will build some strenght, but it's mostly about applying your strength to punching. On any non-upper body day you should be fine. It's llifting that will primarily build your muscles.
  20. That's what I was thinking. Light contact striking sparring should not be very influenced by strength - it would be more about speed. In heavy contact sparring, those with strength should use it I think. For grappling, I think it would be hard to avoid using your strength.
  21. He made it as far as he did because he gets results, not because he adhers to some standard of "form." The proof of the pudding is in the taste, not the recipe.
  22. I think the author who thinks rear leg kicks should not be used should answer why it seems to work for the Muay Thai guys.
  23. I think that if you didn't mind living like all those guys in Thailand who train "for free," then getting $100+ a month for fees wouldn't be a problem. The problem isn't Dojo fees, it's all the other things we decide that we need & then spend our money on.
  24. As a former member of the Department of Defense, I see no problem with the terminology. No victim mindset there!
  25. Well, fitness is a key cvmponent of Goju Ryu, both for the power of the attack and to help in taking a hit. How can you defend yourself if you are out of shape? What were the four items listed in the article?
