The instructor is a purple belt and is several notches down the lineage from the Gracie family. Not sure if this matters that much, but I wonder if the level of instruction will be as good as what he would get at the Gracie academy. Of course, if that's the best place to train, then you do what you gotta do. Respectfully, Sohan

One more takeaway: 4. Don't escalate situations that can be solved with wit over brawn. The subject of the story created the confrontation by embarassing the guy, when he could have used humor or levity to ease the tension. I am by no means a pacifist, but he could have helped his colleagues out without having to resort to a physical conflict. The so-called "The art of fighting without fighting". Respectfully, Sohan

Yep. But we also have Bulldogs, Yellow Jackets, Tigers, and (horror of horrors) some WOLVERINES mixed in. Ugly scene at reunions. I study MA just to be able to attend. Respectfully, Sohan

Kenpo Instructor beginning Jiu Jitsu
Sohan replied to parkerlineage's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I know this may sound simplistic, but can you just ask? I'm sure the instructor would appreciate your professionalism and courtesy by your asking the correct protocol. My gut says go white belt unless offered the opportunity to go otherwise. Empty the cup, so to speak. Respectfully, Sohan -
If You Created Your Own Martial Art Style....
Sohan replied to Sohan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well, unfortunately my last name doesn't go well as the name of a style. Doesn't roll off the tongue like Uechi-ryu. But style names usually reflect not only the martial way of the founder but the culture and geography that that founder is a part of. So the name would have to be in English, first of all. I would want a martial art that represents peace and unity over war, a style that is not overly dogmatic yet represents the fundamentals of successful proven fighting skills for my geographical area and the physical dimensions of those like me who would practice it. ...................... ..................... . . . . ...................... .................... . So considering all that, I suppose an appropriate name could be, "The Southeastern U.S.A. Martial Way of the Peaceful Fist". . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Hmm. Guess that shows that some of us Americans don't have quite the system-naming talent that the Asians have? Respectfully, Sohan -

Thanks! I'd be interested to know what your thoughts are about those that you don't agree with. I certainly wouldn't hold it against anyone to disagree. And you're absolutely correct about no absolutes in this case. They're just cats, anyways. I wouldn't fight like a crane or drunken monkey in every case either. Respectfully, Sohan -
You're absolutely right. UFC limits heavyweights to 265 lbs. Duh on my part. Respectfully, Sohan

Possibly another Mark Spitz! Actually more like Ian Thorpe of Australia. He has been noted for his size 16 feet and was the youngest male world swimming champion at age 14. Mine were size 11 in High School and I could only dream of such success. Respectfully, Sohan -
What a feeling. Glad you're enjoying it! Respectfully, Sohan

I guess it's all a matter of perspective. I'd rather look bad and win. But seriously, good luck in your tournament. Respectfully, Sohan -

It's an extreme feeling of power with the first shot that morphs into a sense of tremendous responsibility. My dad taught me to shoot and I plan to teach my son, if for nothing more than to show respect for a firearm. Respectfully, Sohan

Work up slowly. Do sets of 3 minute rounds starting with just 2 or 3 and work up to 8 or 10 (or more if you like) with one minute rest periods. Never skip barefoot unless on a cushioned mat. Respectfully, Sohan

Apparently mine is defective... and as you get older it gets more defective So you have that to look forward to Aaagh. Don't say that. I just received my first AARP solicitations. And I'm not close to 50 yet.... Respectfully, Sohan

I know this thread is a little old, but when I read it I really needed to post. Max, if you're 13 and you're 6' 140 lbs with size 15 feet, you need to go, no RUN, to the nearest swimming team in your area. There's an Olympic medal out there with your name on it. Seriously. Your dimensions are perfect to be a REALLY good swimmer. Respectfully, Sohan Living vicariously? Well, that swimming can build awesome strength. In pretty much every muscle in the body... Ha. Maybe I am! But if I was 13 with feet that big, you bet I'd be making a beeline for the nearest swimming pool. And it sounds like he's got a lot of growing yet to come.... Respectfully, Sohan -
Question about a teacher
Sohan replied to Cat Nap's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I think the issue I have with private sessions is that if her and her instructors' teaching is of a high quality, they shouldn't need so many private sessions. It seems to be more a moneymaker than something that is in the best interests of the students. I think you get a free headband for every three private sessions you purchase. Respectfully, Sohan -
