  1. Well, I was half-way there. Not bad for a Korean stylist, I would say!!
  2. Yes, best regards in your search to mend things in your style. And also, welcome to the forums, both of you.
  3. That is very interesting, but I don't think I buy into his theories too much. But, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
  4. That form name sounds like one I have seen in my Tang Soo Do book.
  5. That old guy does move well! And you say he is 74?! He doesn't look it!
  6. You are correct in stating that there are some things that work better for self-defense applications than some of those found in forms. However, it is like anything, there are basics, and then advanced training. When you take the form, and practice it, and keep in mind how things can be tweaked a little to make it applicable, this is the first step to facilitating your thinking of how to do it even better later on. It is kind of like learning math, you have to learn to add before you can do all of the hard stuff, like logarithms and such.
  7. Wow!! There is defenitely something not right about the shape of his hand and foot, after all of that training. I don't like arthritis, so I think I will avoid that stuff!
  8. Well, what are the problems that you are having with the form? If you could give some specifics, then we could help you better.
  9. I used to think this way as well, but now, I know what bunkai is!! I realize how much you can get from forms now as well.
  10. I like my dobok all white, or white top/black bottoms. I also believe that no matter what color is chosen, it should be the same for everyone in class.
  11. Actually it's Geek not Greek. here's your first lesson: C:\DOS C:\DOS\RUN RUN\DOS\RUN! Thanks a lot! I look forward to the next lesson!!!
  12. Hey, hey!!! All right!! Chiefs blank the 49ers 41 to nothing!! And it was done with a lot of good defense, which has been lacking the last 5 years. Good points: 1) Found out that Huard can throw the ball well. They opened up the offense for him some, and he did well. His numbers were very good; not great, but good. 2) Defense is on its way back. Reminds me of the Schottenheimer years. We got good pass rush, and had good coverage. We (Chiefs faithful, that is) got to see exactly what the "Cover 2" defense is supposed to do. Bad points: 1) I read in the paper that Jarred Allen got a DUI over the weekend. I don't know what punishment (if any) the team or the league will divy out, but it looks bad for the team. 2) Larry Johnson did not look all that great this week, and it also looked like he didn't feel it; like he wasn't trying as hard. It could be just me, and I hope it is, and I am wrong. With the line in shambles, I can see where he would get frustrated. 3) All of the good things I mention above do relate to the fact that it was the 49ers. I am not trying to knock them, but they have been in a rut for the last few years, and are not a strong team at all. Conclusion: Great week for KC, but we have to see if they can start to play like this against top tier teams as well. I am not going to get over excited, but am just going to enjoy this week, and wait for the next. My fantasy team is doing ok, but I think I may lose yet another, as the other team has 2 more players to go, and all of mine are about done. What is worse, is I am playing my youngest brother this week.
  13. Its all understandable. When someone upsets me like that, I tend to see red for a while, too. After things settle a little, its all good.
  14. You bring up some good points, DokterVet. I think if you look into some of Iain Abernethey's books on applied karate, and bunkai jitsu, you might see what you are kind of looking for. He has several levels of bunkai training, with the last called "kata based sparring," which is the live resistance that you are talking about.
  15. Well, I think chi exists, but I don't think of it as anything overly mystical. I think it is our life force, an energy that everyone has. Some may have learned how to channel it, and some may not have. I believe that if you try to visualize your power as coming from the center of your body, then you are attempting to utilize your chi. I like to think of it as "internal energy."
  16. Thanks for the info, Kenpo5th. Very enlightening.
  17. Welcome to KF!
  18. Welcome to KarateForums.com, bygolly!
  19. I have a wavemaster standing bag. It really doesn't take up a lot of space.
  20. Actually, mobility is essential when weilding a 4 foot blade. My normal set up is sword and shield....carrying a lot of weight there, and I still stay mobile. Here is a simple fact IMO: when weapons fighting, being static gets you killed! A lot of people seem to have the romanticized notion that kendo, or the art of using the katana in some form, is the king of the crop when it comes to sword styles, or weapons usage in general. I think that if more people looked into the medieval styles of European swordsmanship, they would be surprised to find out how effective they were as fighters.
  21. We usually do not find out right away because our results get sent to HQ to be entered. Also, it takes about a week for the belts to come in, so we just wait until the belts come to announce results.
  22. Best bet is to go with an instructor if one is available.
