  1. Yep, Wing Chun was his original style. He then studied various forms, and found great value in boxing and grappling. He was not a big fan of the point tournaments at the time, and was never recorded as competing.
  2. I try to work my combinations and counters when I spar with others in class, so I can get them down. I'll also take some time to spar tall people, so I can prepare for that as well. At the tourney, I'll scout the previous fights, to see what the others' tendencies are.
  3. I also feel this way about Olympic TKD. The only con there is the restriction of the target areas.
  4. Even as a standup fighter, you are going to have to do a seriously excessive amount of damage to the other guy to have a bad case go his way. As long as you can do what is necessary to stop the threat, and nothing more, you should be fine. One major thing is to help yourself out by not kicking them when they hit the ground, and you are standing. This is the advantage of grappling; most likely, you will both end up on the ground at the same time, so the level of threat is still the same (barring the use of weapons).
  5. This is an approach I had never thought of. Very creative, and I kind of like it. It is definetly hard to explain how a guy "fell" onto your fist!
  6. That's good advise!
  7. Keep your chin up, and keep searching for a school. I am confident that you will find something.
  8. You need to alert someone about his actions. Supervisors, teachers, anyone who will listen. Also, keep hanging out in groups. That should help. Otherwise, go to the police. Better safe than dead.
  9. ps1 makes some very good points. In school, getting into fights is going to get both parties reprimanded. In my opinion, that is ok. It keeps the balance. Also, if one has a history of bulliness, then the school administrators will know that, and act accordingly. If my child can explain what happened and why, and then I can determine if they were at fault or not, I will punish accordingly. If the school still punishes, then fine; I can't argue their policies. However, if I feel my child was in the right, I will let the school know, and I will let my child know how I feel. Personally, looking back now, I would not worry about getting into trouble or not; I would worry about not getting beat up.
  10. Different words that mean the same thing. It seems that Chinese words can translate in several different ways in English. Also, the "g" may sound more accurate than the "k" does in pronunciation.
  11. Tradition can be one of the major downfalls of TMAs. Just because it is tradition, doesn't mean it is right.
  12. Man, that's sad to hear. Good luck in your search.
  13. I saw the preview for this fight, "The Real Deal," being set for Oct. 21 here in the U.S., at Las Vegas. This looks like it could be one of the best fights to come around for a while, and I hope that I get to see it, one way or another. So, who do you take?? I am going to go with Coleman.
  14. I saw this the other day on a Pride preview. I didn't realize he was fighting professionally now. How has he faired? Is he an entertaining fighter to watch, and has he reached the upper levels of competitivness in the sport yet??
  15. People will sue for anything these days. If you are worried about trying to avoid a lawsuit when trying to defend yourself, then you will not be very focused on the task at hand, regardless of the style that you use. What it comes down to is use of force. You would have to check the statutes for where you live to see what the laws are regarding use of force. That stated, grappling can be very effective for self-defense, because the holds that you apply can be used to restrain the aggressor until help arrives, or as you stated, you can just knock them out, and call the police. Any style can be useful for self-defense, as long as it is trained properly.
  16. I feel that if you want to call one person by a title outside of their place of business, then everyone should be called by Mr. or Mrs. as well.
  17. That would probably be a good move on his part. But in 15 years time.....he would have to have a BIG fight purse to make that up, I'm guessing.
  18. Maybe....you should feel lucky??
  19. A very nice article; I like the approach.
  20. I will look into it, thank you!
  21. Your lesson plan should "be like water..." Very nice, Jiffy!
  22. Very good point. Always be willing to make an effort to help students, but do not lie to them if you don't know something.
  23. Sorry to hear this. Maybe she will return sometime, when they get figured out exactly what they want to do.
  24. Will that start to affect my weight training, i.e., make me more tired, and restrict my results?
