  1. Any one of those will benefit you as far as getting some activity and helping with self-defense. It really just depends on what you want to do.
  2. I like the idea behind what you say, Drag'n. However, I still see guys take quite a few of these kicks in the course of a fight. How do they handle it? Are they moving just enough to lessen the load? Or is part of it toughness?
  3. Thanks, guys. As for the Tiger form I had read about, it is referred to as the advanced Tiger Form "So Hu Yun," performed by GM Chun Sik Kim. The picture and caption were circa 1976.
  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acZI-6Xnijs I practice 3 days for 90 min each, it will take me forever to dismount and remount a kata to a point useful for self defense applications,I spend my time only on applications of Naihanchi shodan and sandan as for self defense plus some limited white crane and BJJ techniques, rest of it for me is just a art, i try to perfect my art in performing kata and knowing the bunkai the way i was taught so i can pass it on to the next student. in every single dojo i have been they do a kata and they show some bunkai then you get to practice with a partner , how many times? 3 each? No 10 times each? if you ask me each single application should be practiced for months and tried to be adoped for full contact sparring as well just like a boxer, knowing tons of techniques seems cool but it's not effective same as kata. You make some good points, P.A.L. Drilling kata applications is important to do alongside the actual kata. Nice video, by the way.
  5. I have seen this as well. Many researchers think that this may be the earliest recorded martial art in history. I have heard of this as well. Some believe it is the purist form of the wrestling that survived from the Greeks in the ancient Olympic games.
  6. Man, that is crazy stuff! Welcome to the forums, UltimateMunky!
  7. Rear hand hook: http://seaford.abc.users.btopenworld.com/rear_hook_Head.htm
  8. If your cross is coming from the outside, I don't think you are throwing a cross punch. That sounds more like a hook to me. The cross punch should be a straight punch.
  9. No, but close. It's Walker, Texas Ranger.
  10. The nice thing is that the similarities between TKD and Shotokan should help you to acclimate fairly quickly.
  11. Welcome to KarateForums, PaulUK. It is great that you are looking into persuing a martial arts career. There are many styles out there, and each one has advantages and disadvantages. You should defenitely look into what your options are, so that you can find a style you like, and an instructor that will suit your needs. Reference this article: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=24026 Hope this helps!
  12. I don't think that being a martial artist scares people, for the most part.
  13. Nice.
  14. Thanks, Kez.
  15. I think it is something that would have to be organized and spearheaded by the AAU or something similar. That would be a great thing, I think. Wrestling already has the link from kids to high school, to college, and then to the olympics. Martial arts could have this, too. Personally, and this is just me being biased, I think that Olympic TKD would be a great way to do it, because the WTF and the IOC already have standing rules, regualtions, and wieght classes. Very similar to the set-up of boxing and wrestling and judo.
  16. More news. It just gets better. Tony Gonzalez set Kansas City Chiefs records today for total yards from scrimmage, and total touchdowns. Also, Gonzalez only needs 3 more TDs to tie Shannon Sharpe for the NFL record for TDs by a Tight End. An additional note. Coming up with the idea of playing for the Governor's Cup is great! These two teams were flying around, hitting each other, scrapping a little; this is building into a great inner-state rivalry. I like this rivalry, and it seems like it could escalate to the level of Chiefs-Raiders. This is a great thing for football, and I hope it continues to grow.
  17. Thought I'd dig this up, and give a report of my fighting this week. My brother fought with a spear/halberd, and basically used my head as a cue ball, and the spear tip as the world's largest pool stick! Wow, my neck still hurts from whiplash. He did so many sneaky moves, that I could not see it coming. We were fighting 2 on 2, and I got my butt smoked pretty good. Also, a friend of mine was two weapon fighting, and every time I would get the killing blow on him, his last shot was always a shot from his left hand on my weapon arm (I used sword and shield, and he is left handed). Gotta work on that defense!
  18. Congratulations!
  19. Wow, it sounds like you had a lot to overcome! It is great to have you hear. It is cool to have a fencer on board. I have always had respect for the style, and I fashion myself a student of medieval swordsmanship as well. Glad to have you here!
  20. Good luck to you! Keep us posted?
  21. See this thread: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=28318 Also this: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=28255 Thanks!
  22. Good info, Andrew_Patton. Thanks.
  23. I agree with this. Look at kids sports, like wrestling, football, etc. They don't have ranks to advance them, and the kids stick around. The martial arts has the added advantage that no one gets cut from the team.
