The Martial Artists' Training Log
bushido_man96 replied to bushido_man96's topic in Health and Fitness
600 lb. squats, James! That is awesome! And here I am, working out with around 160 lbs. at the moment! -
Don't you think you might have been a bit hard on the kid? I've had more important pieces of clothing laying on the floor of my house, waiting to be washed in the laundry.

I have a brother who lives near St. Louis. If I ever get up that way (which may happen in a year), I may have to come check your place out.

This may change in the future. One of the ITFs is in discussions with the WTF looking to bring some sort of form event to the Olympics. Its a long way off but maybe it could happen. It is really going to be up to these two organizations to decide to bring more back to TKD than the Olympics can offer. There is no doubt that the drive for the Olympics produces some great athletes. However, there can be great Martial Artists who are not cut out for the Olympics as well.

Veteran black belt joins new MA style - status?
bushido_man96 replied to Takeda Shingen's topic in Karate
I see what you are getting at, and it isn't unlike anything I have had to do. I went from being a 2nd dan black belt in one TKD organization, and had to start over when I joined another. So I know what you are getting at. Here is a different thread that I started on a similar subject. It may give you an idea of what I think: http://www.karateforums.com/outside-style-practitioners-working-out-in-your-school-vt33277.html -
If you get into a rut, sometimes shaking up the routine can help. Start the class by sparring first, and see what goes from there.

What I like about Abernethy's approach is that he has taken the time to really break things down, take the forms apart, and look into what the applications could be. If you make it work for you, then it can't be wrong.

Quickest to Blackbelt status?

Mix Three Styles
bushido_man96 replied to Aces Red's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I think the term "traditional" is a misnomer in itself. Absolutely true. Thanks! Its hard to get support on this statement at times. -
I agree. The reason that competitions like with Wrestling, Judo, and even BJJ are around is because there is a natural tendency for man to want to test his strength, skill, and physical abilities against another man (or woman ). I don't think that there is anyone around here claiming that cage fighters are the best fighters in the world, bar-none. I haven't seen any real "hero worship" going on. Everyone has a bias, there is no doubt about that. However, I don't see any proponents of "this is better than that" at this point going on.

The style if you had the time...
bushido_man96 replied to NightOwl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
FMA would be great to practice as well. -
It is the age of the gun, but what happens when you don't have it drawn? Besides that, if hand-to-hand combat wasn't still a threat, then the armed forces of the world wouldn't waste time training it to their troops.

Old martial arts question.
bushido_man96 replied to yingampyang's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yep, that makes sense to me. -

Veteran black belt joins new MA style - status?
bushido_man96 replied to Takeda Shingen's topic in Karate
Well, I see what you are saying, but their rank from the other style should get some recognition, due to their knowledge. If you want to make them work through the ranks of the new style, then that is fine. But they should still have some recognition, I think. -
Best of luck to you!

Would I be out of line to ask this of instructor?
bushido_man96 replied to SkidRow's topic in Instructors and School Owners
This is a tough one. You may want to express your concerns to the instructor, and he may help out. Hopefully, things improve for your son. It will be tough for a 7 year old, but you may have to tell him to just try to grin and bare it; don't let someone else stand in his way of performing well. -
Right on here. It is important to give them techniques that they can block. You don't want to kick over their head, because then they will end up reaching for the block, and you don't want them learning that. When they just turn and run, then you have to make them stop, drag them back, and then make them stand and block your attacks, even if you have to start slow. They have to build some confidence, and then you can teach them more.

Veteran black belt joins new MA style - status?
bushido_man96 replied to Takeda Shingen's topic in Karate
This may be the case, but his knowledge should be recognized. -
I don't know why there are so many non-competing Martial Artists out there that automatically think that a ring fighter would not be able to defend themselves on the street. It just doesn't make sense to me. These guys practice every day at a high level. Sure, they are getting ready for the ring, but I am pretty sure that when it comes down to "real" self-defense, they know how to put an end to the fight real quick. Just lower your jab a few inches, and you have a punch to the throat. Lower the target of your thigh kick, and you have a kick to the knee. There isn't that much mystery to it.

Kicks in a self-defense situation.
bushido_man96 replied to Angus's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I can understand this. However, the range may have something to do with your options as well. If they are clinching you, then the knees are good. However, what if a buddy has your arms behind your back, and his friend approaches? A kick to the knee or groin might be better then. Just depends. -
There are some good points here. Full contact with some protective gear should not have any long-lasting effects, I think. Ali is just one case; there are a lot of other professional fighters out there that don't have the same problem. Like Pittbull says, if you do suffer a concussion, you need to stop for the night, and then see a doctor to follow up.
