Ah, thanks. That helps. However, I don't know where you could find the kind you are looking for.

I see what you are saying, Joe, but I still stand by what I stated. However, I see that you are vexed by the rules you have to spar with, and therefore mean kicking good within those parameters. I would not say that heavy lifting with your legs decreased your flexibility; improper stretching exercises (those not conducive to kicking) would have contributed to your flexibility. What I mean to say is that being a good kicker can translate to more than just a sparring medium. I truly think that you can be a good kicker, even if it is only in the self-defense realm of low-line kicking.

Just doing it more is good advise. Try to limit yourself in sparring, to work on things that you might not be as good at. Try to find drills to do away from sparring that allows you to develop your kicking, and then take it to sparring with you.

Hehe, well, I don't know all. I just don't mind looking around to find out. Or asking...

How big is your group?

This is a good idea. I may have to revisit the rope. Fu Man: the book looks like a good deal, too. Thanks for sharing it.

12-8-08 Defensive Tactics: 8:45 - 10:30. It was good to get back into this. We worked on outside armwraps for the most part, which is going to be what we cover a lot of in the next session he is teaching to the PD this week. I really liked what we went over, and I think that it would be good stuff for our jail staff to learn as well. Chest/triceps Bench press: 155x10, 185x10, 205x5 Triceps push-downs: 105x10, 120x8, 6 Legs Leg press: 320x15x3 Leg extensions: 95x15x3 Leg curls: 160x15x3 Abs Cable crunches: 90x15, 105x15, 15 Cable trunk twists: 70x10x3 12-9-08 Floor side kicks: 3x10 each side Doggy side kicks: 2x10 each side -

Favourite Kata - If you were able to keep 5 what are they?

I agree with you here, and the more I read about Abernthey's approach to training, the more I wouldn't mind spending more time focusing on a single hyung. -

With my first few exposures, I really liked the irimi-nage movements and motions, so I tried to work off of them for a time. I think when it picks back up, I'll ask for a few pointers there, and then work with it on my own to get them down. -
Our org had some age limits, too. But they changed when the GMs kids got to where they had the time in to test, but not the age yet. Nepotism.

Never tried it either. I don't think I would, though.

Burpees are a great exercise to try.

Thanks for the review, tallgeese. It sounds like if it allows the attacker to simulate actual attacks and responses, then how can you go wrong with it?

What are your favourite point sparring techniques?
bushido_man96 replied to Ozpunker's topic in Karate
I know what you mean there, Ozpunker. It sucks when you go to a tourney, and your division isn't that big. I like having bigger divisions. -
"Sijak" is the Korean term for begin.

It would depend on which style of Karate you are referring to. Can you give us some specifics? Maybe then we could help better.

Thanks for the tips, John. I have noticed that the Aikido classes tend to be a bit more helter-skelter in what they teach. It just seems to go on a whim of the class teacher. When we did the seminar, however, it was a bit different. We started with a technique, and we did it from one particular instance, like the same side grab. Then, we moved to doing it from a punch. Then, from maybe a grab and punch. I liked this approach, and I would like to see more of it in a class. -
Alteration with an eye toward preservation
bushido_man96 replied to ShoriKid's topic in Instructors and School Owners
This is a great topic. I like this. For TKD, I would change the sparring approach, first and foremost. I'd still probably do some tournament type of training for those wanting to compete, but it wouldn't be my focus. I think that basics/kihon are good to keep, because they teach good movements for developing power. Although tallgeese doesn't like the chamber motions of strikes and blocks, if trained properly, it can be useful as a flinch-style cover, prior to technique execution. I would find applications for forms training that would lend itself to self-defense more. Reading books and experimenting with the moves, and with scenarios. I did one with the simple knife hand strike in class last week, and I thought it went really well. Introducing some combatives from some of the RBSD stuff that I do from time to time comes to mind, as well. I'm sure I can think of a better way to line this out, given some time. I really think that this is something that can be done by just about any style. -
Favorite MA Mag...
bushido_man96 replied to tallgeese's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Classic Fighting Arts is a good magazine, although a bit more narrow in its coverage. What I like about it is that it is based on scholary research. Black Belt Magazine is the one I read the most. It usually has a wide range of material, and I enjoy seeing other viewpoints of MAs. I also read TKDTimes magazine. I like it, and it has expaned the content it takes on from mainly Korean MAs to other arts as well, including some MMA. Although I think its columnists tend to be a bit narrowminded, the content of the mag is ok.
