  1. Yeah, I'd agree with dropping your center. It may not be a true "counter," but more of a defensive movement to prevent the completion of the technique. I love the suplexes. They really are the beauty of throwing, in my opinion.
  2. I'm not sure that being angry makes you stronger or not (unless your the Hulk...). Adrenaline can, though. However, I don't think that there is a correlation between anger and adrenaline. I do think that it is possible to spar when angry, and to maintain control over your techniques. Like anything, it may take time to adapt to this, but like I mentioned before, it is a matter of channelling it properly.
  3. That's an interesting experiement, Joe. The other night, I was warming up on the bag before class, and was throwing either a vertical or the 3/4 fist punches at the bag. I have to say that I felt quite comfortable with the 3/4 fist.
  4. I'm with tallgeese and WNM here. If my instructor kicked me over for dropping my belt, I'd throw it back at him, give him some choice words, and then leave, and likely not come back. If someone took a blind-sided shot at me like that, my reaction would likely be to retaliate physically...I don't care what rank he's wearing, and I wouldn't care if he thought he could wipe the floor with me, either. I was raised not to put up with crap like that. But that's just me. The belt is just a belt, like the rest of the uniform. And I'm not sure about anyone else here, but I do remember paying for mine, so I don't think I'll be taking any advise on what I should do with what is mine.
  5. That is cool to see. I miss that retro look of the old NES cartridges.
  6. There was an article in Black Belt this month about feinting. It had some good points, but the author made a comment about those not susceptible to feints, in his view, were "unsophisticated." I kind of thought the comment was a bit out of line; everyone just fights differently, and reacts differently. He also claimed that those that didn't react to feints would be slower in reacting to committed attacks, because they are always waiting for the committed attack. I'm not sure about that; he may have a point there.
  7. They seemed to be enjoying themselves quite a bit. Good times..
  8. What is the ball drill, tallgeese? 3-31-09 100 Push-ups Week 5, Day 1: 17, 19, 15, 15, 25 (20) = 91. TKD class: 6:00 - 7:00. At the end of class, we worked on some upper body hand techniques, 3 at a time, blocking and countering. I liked the drill, and think I will do some more of it on my own. 4-1-09 Weights Power clean & jerk: 145x5 Hang clean: 135x5 Power clean: 135x7 Dead lift: 205x10, 255x3 Cardio: Bike for 25 minutes, then a good stretch.
  9. As we get older, even if we continue to train, things will start to tail off on us. But, if we work hard, we can slow down that process. Typically, the older we get, the harder it will be to develop increased fast-twitch muscle, speed in general, and strength. I'm not saying that it isn't possible to do, but it just gets hard the older we get.
  10. I think a lot of us go through the different learning curves between beginner, intermediate, and the advanced ranks. Its just part of the learning process. You'll adjust, I'm sure.

  13. That is funny. Its a good thing no one was hurt.
  14. Welcome to the Forums. Whereabouts in Kansas are you from? I'm in Hays.
  15. A Karate school that teaches Tuite, or a TKD school with a Hapkido supplement, or just Hapkido in general, spend a lot of time on standing joint manipulation. JJJ does as well, although they might spend more time on the ground, as well. Or, if you're just looking for striking, any of the stand-up styles should be good for you.
  16. Sounds like a good time, tallgeese. I look forward to getting to the range more in the future. I want to start shooting more, but I'm at a point where I could buy a gun, or wait and see if I'll get issued one.
  17. I like the combination sword and shield. My shield of preference is a heater, one that is pretty good size. After that, I would want to spend time on the quarterstaff.
  18. I used to feint a bit when sparring, but haven't much lately...of course, I haven't sparred much lately, either. When working with my brother, I used to feint a jab at him quite a bit, and he would bite on it, hard. I may have to give it a go when I do get to spar again. In SD, I don't feint much. The problem comes down to if someone is inebriated in some way, a feint just might not work on them, as their reaction time and level of perception would be shot, anyway.
  19. I have never tried it, and I don't know if I would want to. If I break my arm, I don't go to work, and therefore, don't get paid. So, I think I'll stick with the regular boards for now. I have seen it done with shin kicks, but not with the forearm. It look cool when you do it, though.
  20. Finally got to see it. Wow, it made me feel warm and fuzzy all over again from my Nintendo days. They even re-did the old music title. They made the star uppercut look really sweet, too. It looks like it should be a good time. I need to talk my wife into letting us get a Wii.
  21. Best of luck on your recovery, and welcome to the Forums.
  22. I had not heard of the wobble board. It sounds interesting, though.
  23. I agree with tallgeese, in that you should go visit each, and watch the classes. Talk to the instructors, tell them you goals, and ask them how they can help you achieve them. Some Karate styles will spar a lot, and some may not. TKD styles may spar alot, but some won't. It just depends on the instructor. Good luck in your search.
  24. I used to do the bounce, but not anymore. I prefer to keep my base. I agree with the jumping rope comments; stay with it, and it will help your footwork. Doing the shadowboxing and the work tallgeese explained will add to it, as well. Also, after a workout, when you are tired, do some of these footwork drills. By doing them when you are tired, it makes you push through to keep moving, even when you don't want to. I wouldn't do any technique work, but just work on the footwork.
  25. Seeing as the topic of anger has become its own beast, I have started a thead on anger here: http://www.karateforums.com/anger-is-the-enemy-or-is-it-vt36024.html Please direct all posts on anger over there. Thanks.
