Ever used TKD "on the street"?
younwhadoug replied to taekwondomom's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
when i am confronted by a would be attacker, i act crazy, i mean freakin psycho. screamin how i'm about to bite off his nose and stuff like that. i have done this to a group of gang members in our town, their was probably 5 or 6 of em, they were making sexual comments to my wife in front of my children at the gas station and their car was blocking my mini van from leaving. i went on the psycho thing getting really close to one of em and out of no where i hammered a straight punch to the dudes chest. i imediately got in anothers face and started screamin crazy stuff and i mean screamin loud, by then the clerk was on the phone with police and the punks could do nothing but load their boy in the car and take off as quick as possible. my wife and the clerk and someone else getting gas all thought i was really crazy... maybe i am... i like to let people think what they want of me... my wife knows i am lol -
Comparing two styles of TKD forms.
younwhadoug replied to bushido_man96's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
i train in the world youn wha ryu tkd association and i'm not sure how traditional our forms are but i like koreo the most wich is required at red belt level. i have read that it is a 0dan black belt form in many other systems. i enjoy it because of the high side kicking which recently changed from low-high to middle-high as if kicking someone off of a horse on the battlefield. i like the form also because it represents the spirit of the people of an old korean dynasty who through fortitude and tenacity defeated mongolian agressors. -
mixed tkd
younwhadoug replied to younwhadoug's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
he has shown me a lot and its obvious that he is very skilled, and he teaches me a lot.... i think he keeps from telling me what it is so that i won't take my focus off the tkd onto another system. also i'm not a black belt yet and he lets me spar and grapple with him because i like the abuse and training so much. -
personally i think government has a lot to do with it. if third world countries had the economy we have they would be in the same shape. but other countries such as many of the asian lands have restrictions on certian items and requirements for martial arts and military education. the elementray school my two boys go to is doing cup stacking in p.e. in the springtime and it seems to last for months. also depression is a big reason for obesity. and anyone who seeks psychiatrist can be and more than likely will be diagnosed with something, further damaging their self esteem. don't get me wrong thouugh, more and more parents are letting the televission babysit their kids, whether it be video games or movies or cartoons or whatever. every age group from 1 to 18 spends more time in front of the tv than say 20 years ago. not too many go for walks or hikes or camping or really anything physical. i haven't noticed a difference in what i ate at school and what my children eat at school. the difference i see is with motivating children to play outside or even take intrest in sports as much.

i also found since i have been a dad for ten years, i am pretty skilled in building lego castles. if that counts. my kids have had so many legos and knex and stuff like that i have been building and empire for years now lol. i just reallized that. and can sing a disney tune (not skillfully though) from out of no where at any time... kinda scary i think

advice please
younwhadoug replied to younwhadoug's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
we are not aloud to sweep or trap the legs. i actually was penalized fighting this guy last time for trapping his side kick and nailin him in the chest with a low hook kick. by low i mean i am 5.8. and he is about 6.4. when i say crazy i just mean intensely and powerfully crazy, i always try to maintain good tech. i love the idea about blocking the heck out of his thigh, and i think the oppertunity will come my way. i don't mind being tagged if it sets up a chance. thanks keep the advice coming -
hey folks, we have a tourny coming up in a few weeks and this dude i fought in feb at a diff tourn will be there competing. he roughed me up last time pretty good with a hook kick to the mouth and several blows to the head. kicks i mean. he is much taller than me and pretty much a head hunter. i think i have a chance and i know i'm tough enough to take a beating from him agian, but i want to win. i train regularly and attend fight nights and have a great 4th dan instructor. i trust his advice. i just want some advice thats not from our system so that i may be able to bring some unexpected stratigies to the ring. i guess if i had to describe the way i fight it woul;d be this: i get in and throw an expected or regular fighting pattern to set up. i like to let my aponent land a good side kick or so to let him gain his confidence, once i have done so, i change from basics to somewhat crazy, not out of control, just constant attacks. i seem to be able to block most attacks my that come my way but this guy gets through with his long a$$ legs every time. any advice is greatly appriciated. i am a 2nd red and he is a brown belt and we will be competing together. i'm not worried about losing, i just don't want to lose agianst this guy. he is very cocky and really full of himself not to mention he is one of the only competitors from a different system. he beat most of our brown belts last time and i want to give him a harder fight. thanks

well it took em a while but the newest tournement pics are up now, and we have a tourny on may 6th as well. anyways the new ones are up now. thanks everyone for the congrats. i hope i do as well at the next one -
i like forms for balance reasons, also, they are an exadurationnlkawehrgfhsergf of fighting patterns and self defence technique. forms are great for sparring practice.

yesterdays tournement
younwhadoug replied to younwhadoug's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
i haven't seen the pics yet i'm not sure what they have up, i'm the one in the white uniform in the mens 17-34 red and brown belt divission. i was the only red belt so if i'm on there i shouldn't be hard to spot lol -
our system had a tournement yesterday. red and brown belts compete together and i was the only red belt in there. i was a little worried at first, specially when my wife looked over and seen i was the only one in a white uniform (brown belt and above wear black) and she gave me this "i'm sorry" look. i won second place in sparring and third in forms. i feel great. we have another tournement on may 6th and state championships in october. until yesterdays tournement i had never went for a head kick on anyone just cause i am ussually the shortest person in there, which i was agian, but i figured what the heck i would try it. i ended up landing a few very accurate shots. comments welcome, i just started this thread to vent and show how much fun our system has at the tournements. i didn't really make a point so say what you want. by tomarrow the tournement pics should be up at https://www.younwha.com

mixed tkd
younwhadoug posted a topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
what grappling/ground fighting method do you think mixes well with tkd. and what excactly is randori? i feel dumb asking but i don't want to ask my instructor. i'm sure he told me already but it must not have sunk in. i want to mix my tkd with submissions and ground fighting but i want a style that can be immediately transitioned to from standing or kicking. the stuff i have practiced, i seem to do better from under my apponent. -
Korean Art Kicks
younwhadoug replied to Kajukenbopr's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
my instructor has me do as a red belt: -double roundhouse spinning hook kick -exchange roundhouse jump back kick -ax kick to side kick -outside-in cresent kick spinning jump cresent kick some are flashy the back kick and hook kick seem to be my most effective. these are combos that "flow" nicely for me, hope it helps -
Taekwondo
younwhadoug replied to 1st_degree_black's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
you know i see a lot of people defending themselves and not the arts. when a real situation occurs for me, i hope my martial arts training will pay off cause without it agianst a skilled attack i am useless. now, with that said. if you can train your technique to work on instinct and and your mind to work on targeting, then your in good shape if a real fight happens. personally, our tkd is mixed with lots of self defense and lots of hand movements. tkd for me is a ver practical self defense because of how we train. and because its mixed. but tkd is not for everyone do to size weight preference and instructorship brb -
i grew up in a crappy neaighborhood in denver colorado and from that alone i can tell you there are more than those two reasons to fight. mine was usually driven by uncontrolable rage because i was tired of being messed with. could i have avoided it, i could have, my ego didn't stand in the way, my peers didn't like me already and i didn't care. but i was tired of letting the neighborhood shape me into wimp that shakes every time a gang member walked by. my ten year old recently had a situation with a bully. he is a blue belt and generally is very confident in himself, but he was terrified of this kid and the bullying lasted over a few weeks. we didn't want the kid kicked out and his reletives refused to meet with us and the kid would not give it a rest. i told vincent that he was going to have to eventually stand up to the kid. i then talked to this kid myself at the school and he showed nothing but disrespect to me, he is a ten year old too so i wasn't suprised. the next day vincent hit the kid without being provoked first, or i guess the kid called him a name from down the hall i don't know. but my blue belt hit the kid in the back of the head and the kid ran crying and hasn't messed with him since. my son knows right from wrong, he also knows there are people in this world that he might just have to deal with himself.

my head instructor does demos everywhere he can. he invites people he meets everywhere. i'd say word of mouth is the biggest catcher for us and our divission is growing quickly with all age groups. the most impressive sign ups i think is people who seen our senior group doing tai chi. their family members sign up, passer byers who see an 66 year old green belt can suddenly start to think it could work for them too or a mom dad and 4 children.

just a question about TKD
younwhadoug replied to Bushido58266's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
having giving this some thought, disregarding my instructors personal style, i have to say as a tkd red belt that if you punch at me or kick at me my hands will be at guard and ready to strike. i think anyone that leaves themself open is either good enough, wich there are a few, or just cocky. im trying to learn to keep a leg at guard as well. tips welcome -
i have had an injured groin and hamstring for about a month. does anyone know some good stretches or exercises that would help? i have testing and a tournement coming up in three weeks and really need to get back on the ball!
-
i had an injured hamstring for a while and was grounded from kicking for a while, i still trained but my technique through the healing proccess seemed to go downhill. but after my leg got better, i could kick better technique had improved, power and speed had improved. i think it is because we worry so much about out training and tech, so much and then having to train slower that without reallizing we get better. its like being able to perfect something slow then do it quickly and its awesome. if that makes sense
-
the more i get into martial arts the less i draw it seems. but now i just draw alot of martial arts stuff. used to draw alot of fantasy art dragons castles fea elves all that lord of the rings stuff
-
i want to be the coolest dad in the world to my kids. help children reach potential they otherwise would not have even known they had. love to compete. love to train.
