The answer to your question is yes. But I don't know if I would say a "natural fighter". I think it is best to say that one can possess an innate fighting ablilty. Simply meaning that it is easier for the person to understand, comprehend and learn those things pertaining to fighting. One just doesn't magically become a good fighter without some kind of training and experience(i.e. getting into fights without formal training). Without proper training, or learning from experience, then one can never be a good fighter, he may possess a "natural" or "innate" ability, but you can't just magically be a good fighter without the above mentioned. Anyhow, that's just my take on it.

Kick height is the key stretching, strength or both?
Jade_Lotus replied to aes's topic in Health and Fitness
G95 brings up a good point, your hips must be flexible as well. It's a combination of both. Have both hip and leg flexibility and you will kick higher with much more ease. They go hand in hand, one without the other, and your cutting yourself short. -
Favorite foods: Chinese, Japanese, and good 'ole Southern food! It's kind of hard to really pin-point any one, but I guess those three are my preferred, but I like lots of different kinds of food. As for my favorite color...hmmm....I like a dark (hunter)green...well, just dark colors in general. That's about it

Kick height is the key stretching, strength or both?
Jade_Lotus replied to aes's topic in Health and Fitness
I agree with KickChick, you really do need both. I believe that you must have flexibilty first though, and I would place more importance on it. You can have strong legs, and still not kick high. You can flexibility without strong legs and still kick high. Flexibility is key, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Strong legs will help give you more power with your kicks when you reach higher altitude. But if your not flexible then you will never kick high, properly. Flexiblity is crucial in a lot of things, ranging from control, balance, speed, and power. Flexibility will improve all these things in your kicks. -
I agree with leaf..there is no connection to 9/11. I believe that the sniper had every intention of killing all 11 victims. He will continue until he is either caught or he gets bored.

Then why do you bother even seeking expansion and improvement in martial ways? If you "never will" hit anyone, then to learn how to punch or to learn how to kick, is just a waste of your time. And a waste of everyone else's time in this forum, for even posing the question. You may do better taking Yoga, or to become a Zen philosopher, if you have no intention of using any martial skills, or are somehow dillusioned that you will never have to. I hope that someday, those "few hits" that you take won't be with a knife, or won't be blows that would cripple or even kill you. Indeed with this attitude someday your tongue will be no more.

Agreed! and doin' it well.

You're right KickChick...I completly forgot about the purpose of this thread(the question being asked). I laugh at myself. But, I was replying to the proposed question about what do you do when you are faced with an attacker who cannot feel pain. I didn't realize that I paid no attention to the original question...thus my conclusion is that my post did no real good in helping the originator of this thread...hmmm..however, my post was useful in demonstrating that for all other cirumstances, breaking could be an option....all this said of course, in a futile attempt to lessen my feeling of stupidity.
-
I wouldn't rule out breaking....If you break his knees and he can't walk, whether he feels pain of not will not matter. He can try and walk toward you, but he won't be able to, it may not hurt him, but that doesn't matter in this case. Breaks disable parts of the body....break an arm, and it can't move....break a knee, and you can't walk....knock his head off it's atlas, and you die(you don't want to do this for every situation, but if someones trying to rape you, or even kill you this woud be an option.)...break a sternum, and he can't move his upper body...take away the pain, and all this would remain the same. Pain can be ignored or it can be quashed by outside influences, i.e. drugs, etc...However, drugs don't make your bones stronger, they don't magicaly make a shattered knee able to walk. They numb the nerves and the senses. You're right about the fact that if he can't breathe, then whether or not he feels pain doesn't matter, I agree with that. But I wouldn't rule out breaking, now obviously if you break his finger it won't matter, as with any technique you must execute it properly, using breaks where they will disable a specific part of the body, and where they would be most effective for the situation. Also, I must disagree that the ONLY way to survive is by choking, there is never ONLY one way..choking is effective but not in all situations...breaking is effective, but not in all situations. Each situation will govern which would be more effective. However, breaking is a very viable option for one that does not feel any pain, and should not be ruled out, just for the simple reason that breaks are not reliant upon the person feeling pain, to accomplish their purpose. Hope this helps.

I'm like KickChick, i come to work, and log on, but i'm not always actively viewing the site, i just minimize it, and when i get a free chance, I'll bring it up and see what's new. Although that's a rare thing in my field! Often my posts are rushed, due to time constraints with work. I'm at work now, so i'm on here almost all day, but mostly the site is minimized on my desktop.

I'm glad you're feeling better. In any case, I agree, let's just leave it at that, no use in debating back and forth..we just agree to disagree. As you said, we have differing opinions..this is the nature of discussion, I only offer what I have learned for the martial development of others, nobody has to take it to heart...doesn't make it right or wrong, as you said. I wish you the best of luck in your martial journey, and hope you find that which you seek. -Jade_Lotus-

Do you have a point or even a purpose? You quote me and say things that I never said the contrary about. For what reason?? You post is pointless, it neither proves, nor says anything worth any value. I very briefly explained an incident, leaving out many details, you'd be wiser to ask for more detail, before you decide to conclude that I did it wrong. I'm not saying I did it right, hind sight is always 20/20. I never said running is wrong, I said that it's not always an option. Perhaps if you understood my post you would realize that. Don't take me for an idiot, I wasn't talking about someone with a rifle at 50 feet, do you really think I'm that stupid? The general idea in this thread is defense, not against an attacker with a gun at a considerable distance, but against an upclose street fight. This is one of your respones: "If you could run, and assume it would be bad, then you must assume that your opponent is faster or has better endurance. " Maybe you didn't understand what I meant by suddenly and violently. I'll explain..an unexpected attack, you're walking along minding your business, people are walking next to you, typicall busy sidewalk. In the blink of an eye, you are "suddenly and violently" attacked..you don't have time to run, your attacker is on top of you attempting to seriously hurt you. That is what is meant by "suddenly and violently" your respone to that has no bearing on the example I gave. What you said may be true to other situations, but not the one I gave. I have said there are situations where running would be an option. I was pointing out that running is not the best "art" for self-defense. Your post says nothing of value.. I'm not going to waste my time on it any more. It makes no sense, say what will I don't care. I don't need to, nor have the desire to prove anything to anyone, I only offer my knowledge that I have gained through my own experiences, for the martial progression of all. Take what of it you will, push it off as rubbish..it matters not to me..it's all the same.

Personally, I don't believe in tattoos. They're not for me.

So if someone suddenly and randomly attacks your wife and children, then running would be the best way to defend them?? You don't always have the option to run. Not all situations merit running. Have you ever been suddenly and violently attacked?? Obviously not..I have, and if I had tried to waste precious seconds trying to run, I would not be in the condition that I'm in now. True to the fact though, there are situations in which you have an option to run. Personally, I don't run..I walk away, and downplay the situation as best as possible, if i have to swallow my pride fine...but if the person is determined to follow me and attack me, I will not turn my back to them. I did this once..to a man who wanted my wallet, and then my date..I put my wallet on the ground, and turned away for only a brief moment, and he was in my face with a knife. Never again will I turn my back on anyone. Nuff said. As far as the most effective art....not any one art that's for sure...for those of you who have read my previous posts you know I have a different outlook on "style" and "art" in general. I'm not one to say this art over that art, find what is effective and learn it, don't limit yourself..Basically, if it helps to defend yourself learn it. But do understand that not everything out there is good, and effective in a self-defense situation, find the ones that are..they will give the tools necessary to succed on the street, without it you have nothing. Hope this helps.

Personally, I have been attacked on the street several times by someone that I knew wanted to take it to the ground, they tried with all their heart to make the fight go to the ground. Indeed, they ended up on the ground, but I didn't go with them. It's narrow minded to believe that if someone really wants it to, then the fight will go to the ground, the opposite can be said, if someone really wants it to, the fight will not go to the ground. A grappler has an inherent disadvantage..they have to grab you, and take you to the ground. I don't know where this enlightened knowledge comes from that the fight will inevitably go to the ground. Only 2 of my street fights have gone to the ground....and that's only because I knocked my opponent down, with a stike or a throw, and decided to "finish" the job. I didn't have to sit atop them and pound at them, it was my choice..not theirs. The fight was over before I put them on the ground, I merely chose to continue, I could have stopped, and the fight was over...basically, when I put them on the ground there was no longer a fight, I just drove my point home. Kensai, is right , this guy is a BJJ, he will not write something contrary to that of what he believes, nor would anyones else. It doesn't make it truth or fact. My point is, the fight will not inevitably go to the ground, no on knows what will happen, you must prepare for all, but, from my experience, it has been far too easy to keep the fight from going to the ground. You can't pattern a fight, you can't say this is how all fights will be. Every street fight I have ever been in, was different...some I didn't have this "pre-fight" stage, i was just suddenly and randomly attacked, and never have I clinched...well, maybe when I was in 4th grade, but that's the only time. The moment you pattern a fight, is the moment you set yourself up for the unexpected. I'm sorry but I hold no value in this article whatsover. That's just my opinion.

Where do you work? Or if you are still in School what is you
Jade_Lotus replied to BlueDragon1981's topic in General Chat
I work for IBM US PC Direct Division. You name it do it, inside/outside sales, IT solutions consultation, IT configurations, etc... If you or anyone you know needs and IT solution, send 'em my way. IBM is taking a price action for the SMB to Large Enterprise markets. Thanks -
I gave a quick and simple definition. I said it means "skill". Am I wrong?? I didn't go into detail, you don't have to go into detail. Is there any other meaning to skill other then proficiency of any number of things? You have defined skill, your definition is right, and so is mine. To me there is no other definition to the word "skill" It is what you said, and I have said. I never said that kung-fu, is skill acquired from specialization, if you take time to read my post, I've said nothing contrary to what you have said. I don't know where you get your difference from. By your own definition, you only support what I said. I see no difference.

Elbows, when executed properly, can be a quick devastating attack. They can injure an opponent very quickly. I've only used elbows a couple of times in street fights, they are in my opinion, a viable tool. But you must learn to use them properly, with proper timing, speed and power.

"Kung-fu" in chinese, literally means "skill", and "Karate" in japanese means "hand or empy hand" So one must use a specific, for example "I study Wing Chun Kung-fu" Meaning I study wing chun skill, or skill of wing chun. The same is applied for Karate.."I study Goju Ryu Karate" Meaning, I study Hand of or Empty hand of 50 Dragon. So, when one wishes to compare japanese and chinese specifcally, "kung-fu" or "karate". You need to be specifc.
