Well, when I refer to a "tkd kick", I mean the kind where your foot is chambered. That is, where you bend your leg backwards at the knee, bringing your foot closer to your butt, basically. A thai kick is one where you bend your knee some, but you turn your hips over as you kick and swing a dead leg into your target, without using your quads to extend your leg hardly if at all. I hope that makes sense (if it doesn't just say so).

Like I tell everyone, first thing is to practice kicking. Second thing, strengthen your legs via weights, running, or whatever.

Wing Tsun vs...
TheAnimal replied to dippedappe's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Well then kung fu schools are giving themselves a huge weakness that I would exploit if I ever fought one of its' students. -
Ill second that.

Basic 3 punches
TheAnimal replied to AndrewGreen's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
well, its just a hook thrown from the rear hand, a cross is straight, a hook comes in a circle. -

Haha, I went completely out once. Waking up is SO confusing! -
No, that was quite interesting. While I dont think like you do, I can see where youre coming from.

ufc figthers block like boxers (not exactly, but you know what i mean), and their gloves don't help at all, believe me. you see a hook or cross coming in, you just absorb it with your arm tucked tightly to your head like a helmet, its not a problem. you block it with your arm half a foot from your head, believe me, youre getting hit.

Need plenty of help

right now concentrate on your skills- light guys seem really heavy and strong when they have good technique. the tournaments coming up real soon, its probably not the time to try and completely change your body type. -

Hm, interesting. Buuuut- what do you think about the opinion that sport fighting produces the best fighting techniques, as they are proven and forced to evolve? (Obviously I am of this opinion- are you?) And why not train MT with people of other weight classes anyway, sounds like great way to get better to me.

Effective Against Multiple Attackers?
TheAnimal replied to keith_aquino's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Unless you run for an hour, the slower guys will be there in 5, 10 seconds anyway. Run towards a group of friends who will ambush your attackers. -
I do believe youre confusing ADRENALINE with TESTOSTERONE.

In my experience (and that of everyone I know who actually fights) the only blocks that will actually defend you from another guy who knows how to fight are those that boxers do. That arm away from the head stuff will just get you hit. As for as an x-block is concerned... what are you kidding me? In a real fight such a thing is so impractical I don't even know where to begin describing why.

I fought against a bully today
TheAnimal replied to GhostFighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
If you actually knew how to fight you wouldn't be facing your head away throwing punches. I have this mental image of two girls slap fighting swinging their wrists wildly with grimaces on their faces. I guess this shows how much your typical bully knows how to fight as well. -
Your Best Sparing Combos

jab-cross-lead hook- cross maybe follow it up with a legkick. jab-jab-elbow!!! lead upward elbow (name?) to pop the head up- regular rear elbow to knock him out- clinch and knees if need followup -
Defense against School Scuffles
TheAnimal replied to ShotokanKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well, IF you can get away with it, punch the guy in the nose, twice, and if need be follow up with a shot to the jaw to knock him out. If it was just you and him, he started it, you defended yourself. If your friends are around, they can back you up in your story. Woohoo! -
Man, it never amazes me the complete lack of understanding people have with the equations like F=ma when it comes to punches. Anyway, while both are important, Id lean towards wanting more strength than speed. If it weren't more important, weight classes wouldn't exist and a smaller guy entering a bigger weight class wouldn't be such a big deal.

Bodybuilder vs MA fighter
TheAnimal replied to GhostFighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That isn't to say, however, that a martial artist with limited skill won't fall to a guy who has 75lbs of muscle more. I like to say: first rule of barfights- big guy wins; second rule, anything can happen. -
Bodybuilder vs MA fighter
TheAnimal replied to GhostFighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
HAHA! Ive seen one of these first hand in some amateur cage fights- a body building guy who walks out with a girl on each arm, and a somewhat fat black guy who apparently had a boxing background, who was initially boo'd by the audience. The bodybuilders punches were so slow it was pathetic, and the black guy whooped the ... out of him. I loved it! -
People lose interest, such is life. She's more likely to take time off and come back later having missed it and end up enjoying it than force herself (or be forced) to go when she hates it; which will only make her disinterest grow.

You'd be better off shadow boxing or working a heavy back when you are alone. While I personally think kata are silly at best, if you want to do them, so be it. But remember that other things will help you learn to fight as well.
