I enjoy it. I've been working exclusively with it in kobudo.

Good luck on the testing and it's good to see that you're going to add weapon classes to your dojo. It's pretty hard to find weapons training in many places.

Doesn't snickers actually make a health bar?

I wonder if there would be enough intrest in this sort of thing to merit a nutrition and recipies section of the forum?

Defending against the Straight Blast
lordtariel replied to EarthElement's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I had a guest sensei talking to us about this. He said you have two options. Move forward and attack or disengage so you can move forward and attack at another angle. If he's starting an attack, be there first, he may be the one to backpedal if a strike's coming at him. If he's in a flury of attacks, go diagonaly forward. It will take him longer to get you back in line for another attack and most people don't expect an opponent to go towards danger. It's also an effective means of running away if it's a dangerous situation as well since he'll have to do a 180 before he can start chasing you. -
I think attitude plays an important role in psyching your opponent. Not the flaring of nostrils or glares or posturing, but the calm, assured attitude. The confident stride to the ring and proper and spirited bow. Marks of a competent fighter. You're expecting some fancy combination and WHAM, he nails you with a simple reverse punch.

I suppose it depends on the rules of the tournament you are in. For us, points are graded on the following criteria: Timing Distance Vigorous Application Form Zanshin(I hope I spelled that right) Attitude less than 100% any of these categories in any attack is given 1/2 point while less then 90% in any of the categories is no score. Head contact is dependant on the skill level of the fighters, light contact for everyone but black belts. I think a tournament is about the most stressful of a situation that a student can safely be in. You can be a great martial artist, but if you've never actually been in an aggressive combat situation, odds are you'll choke. Just my couple of cents.

I started training at age 18 in Judo. I've always been into fantasy and my intrest in fighting has stemmed from that. Unfortunatly, when I was young, there was only one dojo in my city and they wanted to charge $40 a week for training, but I could get my black belt in under a year. By the time I got to community colloge, they had started offering judo as one of the phys ed courses. I wasn't particularly fond of judo. I don't like grappeling and I wasn't particularly great at it. There were no forms and really no way you could practice without a dojo. When I moved on to college, the only open course in martial arts they had was Tai Chi. Fortunatly, I had an instructor who knew some martial application and was willing to admit he didn't know everything. Tai Chi was the opposite of Judo, all forms and very little practicle application. I stuck with it for about 5 years before I had graduated and moved away from the city I lived in. Now I'm taking Karate and seem to have found a good ballance between the two. Forms are important because they help you disect and truly understand the moves, but it has to be combined with actuall application so you can make that knowledge practical.

We're going to be getting another dog in the next month or so now that we've moved to a place that has a big yard. Thinking about getting an Aussie Sheepard. Then again, I really like mutts.

Defending Against Being Attacked By a Piece of Fresh Fruit
lordtariel replied to Sohan's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
That's cool! I haven't really used anything crazy as an improvised weapon, mostly sticks and such, but my friend bought this steel reinforced 3 foot stuffed moose that was sturdy enough for someone to use it as a bench. He then got a video on using a bench as a weapon like in the jackie chan movies and is currently trying to learn moose-fu. -
I like the peanut butter ones, but I eat them as a snack, not for nutrition or energy.

Do you wear gloves when using a punching bag? Or will you eventually condition you hands without them?

You didn't actually say you were going to kill him. You could argue in fact that you warned him of your ability to use deadly force. Although in today's sue-happy world, who knows?

I'm trying to teach myself how to throw knives. Not just throwing knives but butcher knives, pocket knives ect.

I like most of it. I've worked my way through to atlantica. The one thing I don't like is that you can run through the game just button mashing and be ok. They made quite a few improvments over the first one though. I really like the changes they made to the gummy ship minigame. Makes it almost a game in itself. It's for the PS2 by the way.

Couple of special effects students duking it out starwars style.

And somewhere that's watertight as well. I just moved into a place that had a huge garage and was already making plans to create a training paradise, (previously I lived in a 15 x30 dorm room then a small upstairs apartment) Then the rains came and I found the garage leaked from under the doors and from the ceiling. I hadn't trained in there all week and found it totally ruined the padded rug. Glad I didn't put the TV in there yet.

Better check an adult advance class. If the adults look as bad, it'd probably be best to find another school. All staying in a bad school will do is build bad habits. That being said, sometimes a school will have two tiers of belts, a child level and an adult level.

How Long Have You Been Studying Martial Arts?
lordtariel replied to Sohan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
2 years of judo, 6 years of tai chi, and I've been at Karate for about 5 months now. -
Wow! That's a lot of posts. Congrats!

If you're referring to how many martial art weapons I've had formal training in, then 3, staff, chinese broadsword/double broadsword and straightsword. Weapons I've used in informal training, then 8. The previous 3, Iron Melon Hammer, Tiger Hook Sword, Spear, Jo and Katana.

I was actually kinda fishing for more music to listen to while working out. More names than music styles. Thanks for the replies though.

Sparring Situation: What would you do?
lordtariel replied to EarthElement's topic in Health and Fitness
If he's better at one thing, do the opposite. Don't get into a kicking fight with someone who really knows how to kick, don't grapple with a grappler, fight in the way that they are weakest. If his kick isn't fast enough, come in at a diagonal, catch the kicking leg and sweep the other leg. Remember though, you're a yellow belt, he's a brown belt, you're not expected to be able to work him all that much. Keep working on blocks, sidesteps and redirections. You'll get there.
