  8. I do Shito-Ryu, so I can't say for Shotokan, but we primarily do front, round, side, hook, back and spin. I've never had much luck with a outside crescent.
  9. I think one of the things is the overexposure to it that we have nowdays in movies and competitions. Back in the way back when, there wasn't the exposure to that kind of thing that we have now, so a kiai might have actually startled somebody. Now it's one of the most common responses when somebody finds out you practice martial arts. There face gets all screwed up and they do some kind of lame hand chop and kiai in that whiny pitch.
  10. I didn't grow any taller after 18(I'm also about 5'9), but my frame broadened out a bit afterwards. I've seen some people grow later though.

  12. This is very true. That's also the downside. The flailing (while it does produce the power) makes itt hard to control The problem is, to get strong strikes with the chucks, you have to pretty much telegraph. The twirling is impressive, but you don't get much power when you're choked up one the handles with them. You need to be down towards the other end to get a good strike in.
  13. You have to remember that Kobudo was the art of IMPROVISED weapons, so the weapon's primary purpose wasn't to attack. The people of Okinawa didn't have access to swords or even that much metal, so they learned to make due with what they had. They did it quite effectively, but I'm sure they would have foregone most of their weapons if they had access to normal weapons.
  14. I agree with bushido... its got it's place, just in moderation. Kiai-ing after every strike seems kind of silly. It can help to focus you when you're fighting. It probably wouldn't really frighten anybody, but then again, maybe it would. I've never had to find out.
  15. That's just kinda sad because I could name at least six people down here just off the top of my head that would jump at a chance to learn more of the martial aspects of Tai Chi(myself included).
  16. My sensei taught me a dirty, ugly word yesterday... Polymetrics We did 20 minutes of sprint drills, an entire hour of polymetric training(15-30 seconds between), then an additional 15 minutes of continuous sparring. I haven't worked that hard in a long time, although sparring when exhausted is an interesting experience. Never know when you'd need to turn and fight after running some distance.

  18. The answer is five. You have four different colors of socks. At the worst case by four you will have drawn one of each color. It wouldn't matter what color the next sock would be because it would match any of them.

I think it's kind of foolish as well, It's like going through school untill half way through your senior year and deciding to drop out right before you graduate. Maybe they had some kind of issue with the dojo, but if they act the way you say they're acting, maybe it's best that they did leave.

  22. Be really careful with this. It's easy to injure yourself if you get too much weight and do accidentally hyperextend. I find this method works best when you do it slow to improve your technique. You'll still get the strength training and you'll know that it's your technique driving the punch and not momentum. I usually do it with wrist and ankle weights so I can get some training on my kicks as well.
  23. Its effectiveness really depends on the instructor. Some are more serious than others when it comes to sparring, contact, and practical application. Also, it's important to make sure your training includes some ground skills. You don't have to be obsessive about it, just be comfortable being on the ground and learn how to work back to your feet.
  24. Take some ibuprofin and use heat on the sore muscles. Some gentle stretching can help out as well. I can totally sympathize with you though, I was the same way when I started Karate. It'll get better.
