R-E-S-P-E-C-T and ignorance
Ti-Kwon-Leap replied to DeeLovesKarate's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
OK, add this to the "I'm so wise" posts... Teasing comes from jealosy+ignorance. It's up to you to show respect, not them. Lead by example. Show no weakness, be polite, calm and disarming. Use humor to distract them. Most battles can be won before they start. -
Read "Living The Martial Way" by Forrest E Morgan, The Way To Victory" by Hidy Ochai Or The Martial Artist's Boook Of Five Rings By Stephen F Kaufman. The "bad black belt" won't matter much to you after you read and apply the principles therin.

Take it easy, Dee... it was a simple misunderstanding. If you read the posts after yours it states something about "taken from a tabloid"... or some such, although it was not a comment on your post, I could see where it could be construed as such. Black belt rank should be reserved for those individuals who can not only pass the physical testing but they should be able to explain the philosophy, history, and purpose behind their respective discipline IN THEIR OWN WORDS! A black belt test should not consist of mindlessly parroting memorized text. Any black belt should be able to articulate the hows and whys of all they have learned up until the black belt test. and in my opinion the average pre-teen does not even come close to qualifying. (sorry kids) -
Why did you join the martial arts?
Ti-Kwon-Leap replied to LeaF's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I was forced by my mother to take Judo, then Aidiko at age seven. (I loved the martial arts from the moment I started) By the way, thanks mom! -
I really don't mind if people come to observe during belt testing, although I do miss taking private instruction. By the way, great post, KC!

a 5 year old WHAT!
Ti-Kwon-Leap replied to three60roundhouse's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Once in a while a child prodigy like Mozart comes along and is worthy. The other 99.9% who get blackbelts don't even remotely deserve them. I still think that if it only takes two years to attain a black belt then the test is way too easy. "Yes sir, one black belt hot off the grill...would you like fries with that?" -

1.Your muscles are less flexible after you sleep. 2. Contrary to popular belief, "IronShirt" training will not allow you to deflect bullets. 3. You will burn more calories running from an attacking pomeranian than a cheetah. Oh yeah, attempting to supress a sneeze can cause an aneurysm, although the chances are slim. _________________ "It is not enough to aim, you must hit." -Italian Proverb [ This Message was edited by: Ti-Kwon-Leap on 2002-07-28 19:56 ]

Bruce was having trouble sleeping (being stressed/overly excited about his film career) and one of his hollywood buddies suggested dope as a natural alternative to sedatives. Since Bruce had an aversion to smoking, he was eating it instead. Now, the cannabinoids in marijuana are fat soluble, and it does take up to thirty days to metabolize all of it but he would have to have eaten a LOT of it for it to have reached a toxic level, that is of course he was mildly allergic to some ingredient/s in the pot. At this point in time it's really just conjecture.

SaiFightsMS that was good! Here's an Idea: start asking permission for tattoos, piercings and or bright haircolors. Maybe you could condition him to think that a short hairstyle may be the lesser of four evils... OR: get one of those cute little dutch bob wigs in the style of Louise brooks, and start wearing it around the house. Your dad will then be enchanted with your fasionable new look and have no choice but to indulge your every whim which will surely include getting a functional hairstyle. Of course the whole thing could backfire and he might send you to one of those bootcamps for "troubled teens" _________________ "It is not enough to aim, you must hit." -Italian Proverb [ This Message was edited by: Ti-Kwon-Leap on 2002-07-23 14:08 ] -

Hmmm... I think we need a emoticon that portrays sarcasm, that way people wouldn't take me so seriously all the time. -

Personally I have always preferred short haired females, so my vote is to cut it. But...have you tried berettes? The only other alternative is to have shorter bangs but that usually looks kind of goofy... If I were you I would keep letting your dad know how you feel about the situation and maybe he will change his mind when he sees how serious you are. _________________ "It is not enough to aim, you must hit." -Italian Proverb [ This Message was edited by: Ti-Kwon-Leap on 2002-07-21 12:38 ] -
There are so many fun fakes but my favorite is acting like I am throwing a lead leg kick and then slipping diagonally to their back. It totally shifts the balance of power when all of a sudden you are behind them, poised to strike as they turn to face you!

Find opportunities to stretch throughout the day, like while you are at the computer keyboard. you can do stretches that you would normally neglect like fingers, wrists and arms. But as Jack said when muscles are warmed up they respond best.

Friends don't let friends use AOL. But don't get me started on that. try Kazaa lite, same great taste without all that spyware. OR try Grokster or Bearshare or Limewire or any of the myriad gnutella based programs. As for your problems with AOL it could be any number of things including the fact that file sharing software hogs bandwidth and therefore competes with your browser. Unfortunately, AOL cannot be configured in any meaningful way so it's anybody's guess as to what it's compatible/incompatible with...oh well...good luck!

That was eloquent as well as appropriate, KickChick. I will attest to the deleterious effect of getting your groove on too often; it seriously effects recovery and energy reserves. Women do not have this weakening effect, but then again they are not driven by nature to "get busy" all the time ( they seem to be like a camel that stores water in it's humps) Heh.

I will give you some general advice. )There are plenty of knowlegeable who will chime in I'm sure) 1. Get 8-9 FULL hours sleep (this is more important than anyone realizes. 2. DO NOT fully lock your knee out until it has a chance to heal. (this applies to whether or not it is the supporting leg. 3. No deep knee bends! tell your instructor about your injury so he doesn't give you a hard time. 4. before each workout carefully warm up by doing the "bicycle" exercise while on your back or some other non-stress warmup. after each workout or whenever you have time, ice the knee till it becomes semi numb and proceed to massage till the pain returns. repeat 2 or three times. 5. you might consider taking a Glucosamine/Condroitin suppliment till your knee improves. I would suggest a couple days of complete rest or at the very least extremely light activity (like swimming for example) The possibility exists that you may have damaged the cartilage or connective tissue and it may require seeing a physical therapist specializing in sports injury.

Kensai, you don't have to be concerned with offending me, I'm a big boy. The path of a TKD practitioner after blackbelt is one of perfecting and applying the basics to bring their awareness and abilities to new levels. It sounded like taichi4eva feels like he is at a plateau and is seeking new challenges. While I would not advise him to give up on TKD altogether, I think learning Kung Fu may renew his interest and may even cause him to gain a deeper understanding of TKD in general. I do not believe Kung Fu will in any way do anything but to add to his expressing himself as a martial artist. I would be hesitant to advise a beginner/intermediate student to study two different disciplines simultaneously that is of course unless his goal is to be a hack or just "beat people up". That is not to say, however that there aren't individuals capable of learning two arts at once....but they would be the exception, rather than the rule.

El Guerrero Loco said: "Next time some says tkd doesn't werk to u, y'all should kick 'em in the teeth. Then let them try to say tkd dun werk." Uh... they probably wouldn't be able to say much of anything at least until they got some dental work done but they would still be typing the same crap... that is unless we snap all their fingers!!!! signed: -Ti-Kwon-Loco -

When I first started to play the drums I hated to play anything with a simple beat. I wanted to play complicated polyrythms in odd time. It was not until I played in several bands that forced me to play simply that I realized that music is not about playing the most complicated beats, it's about bringing what ever you do play to life. Martial arts are like that.
