So what did you manage to find out about To Shin Do?

I'm in the same boat. I love to watch this kata, but I haven't learnt it yet. I'm still re-learning a few other katas from our syllabus but Nijushiho is on my list as my next Shotokan kata to learn.

This is a hilarious website, loads of films played out in 30 seconds by bunnies. There are even more on the site, including an bleeped and unbleeped version of Reservoir Dogs. Check it out! Jump up in the air with a spinning uppercut shouting "SHORYUKEN!!!!!!!"

That's good your instructor does that. I am always encouraging my students to do the same thing. Get creative with how they apply the movements. An application that works for a 6'2" well built male student might not work for a 4'10" slim built female student. It's how it works for the individual that counts. Iain Abernethy's book Bunkai Jutsu is great for understanding bunkai even further. The more you understand human movement, the more your views on the application will change and start to make more sense.

When do you think is the best time to start studying bunkai? 1) Before you start learning the floor plan of a kata, 2) Whilst you are learning a kata, 3) After you have learnt the kata

Taken from the Darwin Awards There's always someone who thinks that good advice doesn't apply to them. For example, if advised by a doctor that you are to be covered wtih a flammable material, and the one thing you must not do is go near a naked flame, most people would be able to take this advice onboard, and not strike a match until the flammable material smeared on your body had been taken off. However, Phillip, 60, decided he knew better. He was in hospital for the treatment of a skin disease, which consisted of being covered with a paraffin-based cream. He was warned that the cream was flammable and that he definitely shouldn't smoke. But Phillip couldn't live without his cigarettes. Smoking was not permitted in the ward, but Phillip took this setback in stride, and sneaked out onto a fire escape. Once he was in his little hiding place, he lit up... ahh. Everything went well as he got his nicotine fix; things went downhill only after he finished his cigarette, and ground out the butt with his heel. Unfortunately, the paraffin skin cream had been absorbed by his clothing. As he stamped out the butt, it lit the fumes coming off his pyjamas. The resulting inferno treated his skin ailment, and left him with first-degree burns over 70% of his body. Despite excellent emergency treatment, he died in the intensive care unit. Using the Darwin Award checklist: 1.Reproduction -- if he has children, he's not having any more. 2.Excellence -- this is one that I'll remember. 3.Self-Selection -- he was warned that paraffin and flames don't mix. 4.Maturity -- At 60 I'd guess he was old enough to make his own decisions. 5.Veracity -- All the major news carriers in the UK had the story. This ticks all the boxes, and though I feel sorry for the family, I think that it acts as a warning that if a doctor tells you not to smoke, there's probably a very good reason.

I believe that bunkai is an essential part of karate training as it helps the transition from kata to kumite/applied techniques for self defence as well as helping one to understand just what it is we are doing in our respective katas. My question is this. Do you train in bunkai in your school? If so, how often and do you feel you do too little, just enough or too much? Regards, Richard

Glad it helped Daze

Hilarious! Have you seen the one of him as a fitness instructor? Jeez that guy can do some bizarre stuff with his body! I'll see if I can find it and put up the link.

Have you tried 118 118? Maybe https://www.192.com? There's a good site for finding places and people in the UK I'll get the address for you and put it up in a bit -
It's good that you went to check on the guy though. Forget that you felt apprehensive, the important thing is that in spite of that feeling, you made sure the guy was alright. Most people just turn a blind eye to that sort of thing and pretend it never happened. Society today is losing its moral fibre so we need more people like you to keep it together.

Was that Cradle to the Grave? It's good that someone as impressive as Li can continue to be modest and humble after all the fame he's been getting all these years. I always like to see that in a martial artist. It's when one of them says "I'm the best, nobody can beat me!" that I get really ticked off.

I like the first one - triple kick. Really impressive! Are they supposed to fall on the floor afterwards? All of them looked pretty cool though. I like the kicks in Capoeira too.

I'm currently re-learning Jion as I haven't done it in years and had forgotten most of it. I'm pretty solid on most of it now, just the last few moves I keep forgetting. Practice! practice! practice!

If there is a contact phone number try calling them. The letter of introduction from your sensei sounds like a good idea too.

I must admit I've been to a few Shotokan schools and the large majority are focused on competition. However, the school I am studying at the moment although they do a lot of competition orientated training the last couple of months have had lots of jutsu/application based training. The other school I studied at, but had to stop because of work commitments did lots of applied training in their classes. Focusing more on developing power and how to strike most effectively in a self defence situation. They do a little bit of competition but not much and it's clearly not the focus of the class.

At the moment I'd say my favourites would be Sochin & Nijushiho Shotokan katas Kurarunfa and Suparenpei Goju Ryu katas
