  1. I just thought this was a great post. No analysis or disagreements needed on this in comparison to MA. I just love cats and think Sohan did an awesome job with his long study of CAT FU!
  2. That was awesome luckorskill!
  3. It's boxing. Right now though, each match is only scheduled for 5 rounds, but these guys are really boxing. The matches aren't scripted. Just good T.V. I wonder though what boxers think of the show. Probably feel the same as how most Martial Artist feel about Final FU.
  4. I don't think they really care. The people who love MMA are now really buying up the subscriptions along with the few of us who gave them the benefit of the doubt that they would get better. Not next time! I put my foot down!

We are not governed by an outside organization. We are our own school. We do what our instructors have been taught by their instructors and same as even their instructors before. Too much politics in JKA. I like that my instructor can run his school as he sees fit.
  6. I try not to label a school "McDojo", but I would really check this place out with eyes wide open. Seems like everything has a price! They may be more interested in making a buck than providing hard, effective teaching.
  7. Isn't it really more important that this once fit black belt who is now an overweight master beable to continue to teach his style to his students? Is he now not deserving of his rank because he has a larger belly? Has he lost the mentality to teach? Probably not. Maybe he can no longer beat his highest ranking black belt who is still full of lean muscle, but I bet he would give any would be attacker on the street quite a shock. That is what MA is supposed to be about - defending yourself, not defending yourself against your own black belts ( or other black belt students for that matter).
  8. I agree with Sohan here. First of all JKA guyana, congratulations on sticking up for yourself. You must be a wonderful student to have. You are deserving of respect by all, as I believe all students of all ages and ranks deserve. Isn't that what mutual respect is and has been taught in most dojo's? Keep training hard. As I said in my previous response, you will get the best instruction on doing the kata properly by going directly to your instructor. He is going to want you to perform the kata as he teaches it. This will keep the kata uniform in his dojo.
  9. I don't think I remember mentioning that I thought capoiera practitioners do cartwheels. I was just mentioning that I could not even do a cartwheel in the idea of how physically fit and amazing these individuals are who do practice. Meaning that I am not sure I could do capoiera.
  10. Nice choice of song! I thought you did a great job. You should be proud.
  11. Drunken Monkey: you said you have alot of muscle. What is wrong with that body type for shotokan? In order to be faster, try not to muscle through any moves. Relax your blocks, strikes, and kicks, then snap at the end. That is what I have noticed with powerful individuals in our own dojo, they just want to muscle through all the moves. Once they relax, and tense at the end of the technique -----> well they have power and speed that is just amazing.
  12. I have heard the same thing Bushido and I do not wash my belt. But don't you agree that this topic seems to be one of those things ...like politics or religion... that should just not be discussed. There are so many different opinions by everyone. IMHO, I do what my instructor says. He says.."Don't wash your belt." So I don't. Why don't we all agree to disagree.
  13. I must add that I did train in Kung-fu for 4 years and do enjoy Shotokan much more.
  14. I think whatever style you are currently practicing is going to be your favorite.
  15. I think he would be old. I would hope he would have continued to be the MA icon that he was, wanting to teach his style to everyone (as he had been doing), but I would have hoped he would have lost his arrogance with age.
  16. I haven't heard that, but my knees hurt all the time. I place fault on my job though and not my training. I should quit my job and only train.
  17. I love the contender. I was so happy to see that ESPN picked up a second season. We are going to Vegas soon and actually looked to see if we would be there around the same time that the final match would be held at Ceasers Palace. We will miss it by 2 weeks.
  18. It is very hard for anyone in this forum to give advice to others on kata. The best thing for you to do is go directly to your instructor or a higher ranking student in your class. They will be able to assist you with the moves much better than anyone of us. good luck.
  19. After both BB tests that I took, I went out to eat with a few of the other newly promoted Black Belts and then I just went home and crashed.
  20. About 6 months ago I had renewed my BB subscription and I wish I hadn't. I am increasingly disappointed with their articles. I wish there were more stories on traditional Martial Arts and Martial Artist. Not to be disrespecful to any UFC fans, because I actually quite enjoy watching UFC, but frankly, I am getting tired of force fed it month after month in the BB magazine.
  21. If you can afford the travel, (being that Pittsburgh is only 35 miles from you), there are several good schools in that area. Check them out. I can't say for sure that you will find krav maga, but there are several great MA schools that are very physical and will keep you interested and in shape.
  22. Even after all is said and done, this show will end up getting people off their rear ends and interested again, even for a short while in the Martial Arts. They will go to their nearest dojo and try some classes- see that is not like the show, but probably really love it, as we all do.
  23. I try never to judge anybody and their weight. You never know if they have a medical condition that keeps their weight elevated. Usually it really is just over eating, but sometimes it could be they are on a medication that causes one to be larger ---> like prednisone.

Angela, kata requirements vary at all dojo's. For my nidan testing I needed all previous kata and Kanku Dai, Bassai Sho, Empi, and Tekki Sandan. I have since learned new kata including jion at this level. It is cool to see how each school really does vary.
