The gi isn't made to fit a woman, so tends to make women look bigger than they actually would be in regular street clothes. Am going to quote that under every picture of me on the website!! Cheers LOL KarateK

Someone Likes me in the dojo....HELP!!!
jaymac replied to Shotokan-kez's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
We discourage instructors dating students in our school. I know that you said he instructs younger or lower grades, but still, he is an assistant instructor. If you are uncomfortable revealing your orientation to him, then don't feel pressured into telling him. It is none of his or anybody elses business. Instead, explain to him that a relationship in the dojo would not be professional and that if something were to go wrong, it would put the both of you in an awkward situation inside the dojo. I like the idea of going out with a group of people instead one on one, but if I were you, I would tell him this before you go out and then say, hey we can all still go out and have a burger (or something) -
I believe this article truly sums it up. I am very glad you posted it for everyone at the forum to read. No as Alsey put it, "It was nothing new," but it has been forgotten by many. With extreme and ultimate arts monopolizing the sports industry, I feel the true meaning of what it was like to train in a Martial Art has been lost by this new generation. I understand that there will always be changes, but keeping some things traditional would be beneficial to all students.

To actually list all the things that Karate has helped me in my outside of the dojo life would be boring for all to try and read and cause severe hand cramping for me. I can see everyday how Karate has helped me mentally and physically deal with others in the work place and at home. Karate does equal life!

One thing I saw lacking from the description of doing this kick properly is pivoting on your base leg. When doing a side snap kick, you should pivot on the ball of your foot and turn your heel towards the direction of the kick as you kick. This will help you penetrate through your opponent and save on the knees. As many have already said, it isn't necessarily power, but the technique and speed of the kick and speed of the retraction of the kick that will make this an effective technique.

I think that is fantastic! What an honor! As for what everyone else thinks in regards to your instructors opinion; one thing I have learned over the years of training is never second guess your instructors decision. Good luck in the future. You will do well!

Kata has always been easy for me, but Jion is the one that is stumping me. I feel awkward in my stances. Practice, Practice, Practice and then Practice more. Roundhouse kick was something that gave me a headache, and then one day I was teaching the kick to a white belt, and I listened to my own advice and wham! ---- I got it. I thought, I should have been talking out loud to myself and teaching myself all along

They already are doing another Rocky movie and Sly is the fighter. He is like 60 now! I hope at 60, I look as good as sly. -
I honestly dont look at people that way at the dojo. In the dojo, everyone is uniform and there to train. I think that is what is nice about having a gi, but I do think that a karate gi sits on a woman like a military or officer uniform does. The gi isn't made to fit a woman, so tends to make women look bigger than they actually would be in regular street clothes.

Our Dan testings are also confidential and each one I have attended was done differently by the head instructor. We do not share any information of the exam to any student. However, each person testing is responsible for knowing everything in their syllabus from white to their current rank, including word for word definitions and japanese terminology, all kata and performing every kata well. They are required to defend against several punches and kicks and grabs. A physical test is also given (mainly to exhaust them) i.e. push ups, sit ups, bag work out, running, etc... and kumite. Hope this is helpful without giving out too much info on our testing.

So many good points brought up here. BlueDevil, I think it best to practice with someone whom you have trained with. You can still help/teach each other even though you are upper rank. Work basics from white belt on up. If your friend has interest, he should look to a proper training facility. Not that you do not have good teaching abilities, but liability issues, ranking issues, etc... are things that you may want to consider. If and when you can continue your training in your current style, or if you decide to completely switch, then take your buddy along. It takes several years to really have the experience and technique required to adequately pass on proper training to another person. To just teach him so you have a partner is not really benefiting him as much as yourself.

Well put Jiffy! Truthfully, if we all stop and take a look around, the majority of the U.S. population, including children are overweight. So if any of them are trying to get out and excercise, kudos to them. I think it is all this computer stuff keeping people inside and doing nothing... wait, I'm inside and on the computer Ok, I am going to go practice kata!

Daimyo, I have always been shown that the first move is not a augmented forearm block but a strike. Bushido man - well put!

Good luck with the school and the name thing!

Having a yellow belt moment or two or three ...
jaymac replied to Bluetulipx's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree with you there. Sometimes when I am upset with someone, I write a letter to them and then never mail it. It just makes me feel better. -
KarateK: Yes please use that excuse. I hope it works for you. I haven't convinced my employer or my spouse yet that I should only do karate and not work. As for the HIV thing. Come on- really? It would be almost impossible for that to occur. Most dojo's including ours, cleans our mats everynight with a powerful cleaning agent that kills all bacteria and viruses. I have never heard of anybody getting HIV from any training facility equipment.

Advice please on practicing outside of class
jaymac replied to lostinseattle's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Everyone here has given you great advice. If you really want to continue in this style, then just do it. Set a scheduled time each day (or every other day) to work on what you have been taught. Run your own workouts similar to the ones you did with your instructor. I can understand after 5 years you wouldn't want to switch, but it is really only 5 years. I took kung fu for 4 years and my sifu died. I did not want to take anything else. I was detemined that I would only stick with that style. Well "that style" was not to be found anywhere else in my area. So after 15 years of being stubborn, I joined Shotokan and I LOVE IT! Now I know in Seattle there must be other chinese based styles. If you get tired of practicing alone, look around again with an open mind. -

Alfonso was my favorite also. Don't worry, he has been in this contender also. -
Can't wait to hear more from you. Welcome!

That was really good, especially for a couple of kids. Bet they will be making lots of movies in the future.

I think my grandmother and her friends may have been the basis for that joke

Kazuma- in regards to shotokan and high kicking. Shotokan is more of effective kicking. Don't get me wrong, we have some people who can do high kicks. We really just keep our feet on the ground and do quick powerful kicks. However, as previously said, it depends on the type of school and instructor. Now, Tae Kwon Do has some nice high kicks if you are really interested in that way of kicking.
