Beginning to learn Muay Thai?
Toby replied to Toby's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Didn't expect this thread to pop back up... But anyway. I'm a little further with it now, downloaded some techniques off the net, and found some books. Still not face to face training, but it's better than nothing. I also know this guy who's over in Thailand at the moment training in Muay Thai and he's done kickboxing for a year previously also. He's given me some pointers and an outline of his training routine, which has helped a lot. By the way, I didn't mean to offend any of you guys either, when I said that Muay Thai looks to be one of the easier MA to study. Obviously worded it wrong. And as for finding a school, it's pretty hard, since the nearest MT school is about 800ks away. -
Some very quick hands there dude. Well done.

Don't know if this'll help... But this is my workout plan. Monday - Upper Body Exercises with Dumbells. As well as push ups, sit ups, crunches, pull ups, bench press, dead lifts, etc. Along with my everday exercises. (Ab work, ride bike for 5-10ks, row for 10 minutes, skip for x amount of jumps.) Tuesday - Lower Body Exercises with Dumbells. Plus everyday stuff. Wednesday - Everyday stuff only. Thursday - Upper Body Exercises again. Plus everday stuff. Friday - Lower Body Exercises again. Plus everyday stuff. Saturday - Footy, so mostly running. Plus everyday stuff. Sunday - Rest. It's starting to work, steadily.

Thanks for the advice. 1) Yes, I mean the standard knuckle for making contact. I'll try out what you have suggested and see how that goes. Although, I can't exactly help the way things are. My right side is a lot faster, more balanced, and stronger. Just the way things are. 2) I'm not sure if you understood what I was trying to get across in my first post. When I said dumbell exercises I meant: curls, flies, rows, etc. Not techniquies. Sorry, I should of been clearer on that. 3) i'll see how that goes... I'll just have to figure out what would be the best time for me to stick to. Again, Thanks for the reply. Toby.

Well, My brother calls me "Muay Thai" cause' I watch Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong a lot. I also train on the heavy bag everyday, but have had no proper lessons in Muay Thai. Too far away from anywhere... lol

Hey people, I just have a few questions that have been plauging me for a while now and hope you can help me out here. 1) When ever I'm practicing punching techniquies on the heavy bag (with my left hand) the top knuckle on my middle finger always seems to get sore if I try and punch too hard or too fast. (and it's usually sore the day after as well) I don't really know why it should be, as I can punch fine using the same knuckle, but on my right hand. Maybe cause' I have a lot less power in my left side, I'm not sure. 2) When doing any type of dumbell exercise, should you only use a certain amount of weight (I'm using 11lbs in each hand at the moment) or should you try and increase your weight in steady intervals, like you would using a barbell when doing bench press? 3) Latelty, I've been having trouble sleeping. No matter what time I go to bed, whether it be 9 or 10, 11 or 12 (I usually wake up between 7:30 and 8, assuming I've had a good nights sleep). The earlier I go to bed and try and get some sleep (I struggle), the more I wake up during the night as well. I hope that's clear enough so someone can shed some light on these issues. Any input is welcome. Sorry about the long post. Toby.

He's been doing Wu shu since he was 8... So I suspect he'd be a master by now.

About 50 - My shoulder and abs start to hurt after about 30, but I push myself.
-
Ummm... everything. Lol. Nah, I guess I just like the fact that I'm wirey, but still strong. Well, strong enough... Going to get stronger to, it just wont look like it.

Buy one off Ebay...

I don't aactually "do it" as such, in a practical manner. I just study the theory behind it. I can't do it practically as there's no dojo's around here.
-
Dook Sau - Yeah I know he did both, I have watched a lot of his videos and read parts of Tao Of Jeet Kune Do, probably should read it more thoroughly though. Marine - I start off at about 50% of my body weight when I bench press and then build up to my max in a number of sets, each with increasing weight. I do have some medical reasons why it's probably not easy for me to gain weight too. Which I'd rather not say for the time being.

Well done man.

I'm thinking of getting one myself... I want to improve my kicking and I guess this would be a good way of doing that. What muscles in the leg do a splits machine work/strech though, like would it work/strech all of them, or just certain ones?
-
I'm starting to think that, so I'm going to concentrate more on conditioning... But I will still put in the effort to bulk up, as I want to gain at least 10 killograms. Then I'll be 65kg. Which I think is a good weight. Once again, thank you to everyone who replied.

Do a search man, I'm sure it's been convered before.... I'll try and dig up a link for you. Try this: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=25003&highlight=wushu

About 40kg (80 pounds), I only weigh 55kg so I'm pretty happy with that, and will hopeffully be able to lift more as I start doing more weight training.
-
Thanks Sohan, this plan seems easy and effective... One question though. What should my starting weight be? (I guess i'll start at 25% of my max and build up by 25% for each set.) And as well as doing your workout plan, should I still include the bike riding, rowing? Or do you think that's too much? Thanks again, Toby.

Thanks again for all the replies... I'll give it a go and try out the various traning methods and diet each of you have suggested and see which works best. It's just hard getting motivated. I'll be starting footy traning again today, so there's another good workout. I guess both conditioning and bulk work hand in hand.

Thanks for the replies... Here's a rundown... Breakfast is weetbix - 2 with sugar on top. Lunch is 6 chicken nuggest. Afternoon tea is a sandwitch with penut butter or vegimite or nutella, a bananna, a nuta grain bar, and a fruche (yoghurt). Tea is either sausages and mash potatoes, roast with veggies and salad/chips, fish with salad chips. Sometimes cooked eggs. Night snaks are crumpets with vegimite, penut butter, or nuttela, maybe another bananna or fruche, and maybe some more nuggets, or a pasty, or something similar. All I drink during the day is water, some orange jucie, and one glass of milk before bed (and raw egg yoack). My training isn't too much nowdays, about 10mins on the bike, row machine, 3 sets of 30 pushups, 3 sets of 12 reps of 30kg weights, and some work on the punching bag. Hope that's a clearer picture.

I've tried bulking up by training (bench press, curls, push ups, etc) and it doesn't seem to work... Maybe it's the way my body's built... I'm 5'7, 55kg, but still pretty strong for my size... I'm thinking I should concentrate more on my conditioning rather than bulking up. As it is, it's impossible for me to put on weight, no matter how much or what I eat. What do you guys think?

Beginning to learn Muay Thai?

Looks like I'll have to wait until I can get some face-face training then... Thanks for the advice anyway. -
Hello guys, I've decided that I want to start training in Muay Thai... Mainly because it seems to be one of the more simpler MA to study and get good at overall (I'm not that co-ordinated). But I also like it because it seems to be one of the more deadly MA. Now I don't expect to become a master at it, I just want to gain enough knowledge so that I can effectivly use it when or if I need to. Also I live no where near any kind of Martial Arts school so I'm wondering if any of you could tell me what stretches, training/workouts, techniques, etc that you use for Muay Thai. Or maybe give my some websites with Muay Thai information, techniques, training/workouts, etc... with descriptions and diagrams if possible. Do you think it's possible to get at least half decent at Muay Thai even though I'm not learning it face-face? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Toby.

Why use gloves? I mean, I used to, but then started not to, and my knuckles have got used to it. They don't hurt anymore.
-
I can do about 30-40, but hopefully that will increase to 100 with enough training.
