  1. washjeff09, go back and read white warlocks post. you don't need a black belt to mature. and plenty of people have growth without a black belt. Then reread my original post with that understanding. and keep training.
  2. the purpose of footwork can't be overlooked, despite how you may feel about TKD. i have a black belt in TKD, but I have another in a japanese system, and i choose to teach that because i love the kata. Footwork is so important no matter what the style. It's used so that you can land in a fighting stance after an attack. The faster you return to fighting stance, the faster you can deliver another technique. Call me if ya need another lesson.
  3. My Boss studies with Dosho Shiro Shintaku, And i studies chambara breifly with him. He is every inch a samuri. I had a lengthy discusion with him on this topic and would beg to differ. and just because a guy once told you that, doesn't make it so. Do you think samuri had so much extra cash that they could just run out to sword mart and pick up a new sword. What do you have to back up that statement. I'm willing to research litterature to support my statement, or to support yours. Do you have any litterary reference that i can check on this with.l
  4. I've been playing my whole life. Stevie ray is my Bruce lee of guitar. My biggest claim to fame is I once opened up for Kansas and Yes. Well my band did. I have played lead forever and I used to be a coffee shop player on my acoustic. I have owned so more guitars than sneakers in my life. I love music more than anything in the world. I've always said that if i had to choose between my ears and my eyes it wouldn't be a choice. I have seen all that I need to see. I've seen Pam anderson after all. but I don't believe that i've heard the most beautiful sounds in the world. without music i'd wanna just die. And stevie ray's version of JIMI's little wing is one of the most moving things i've ever heard. Don't forget to break out Leo Kotke tho.
  5. a whole year and your only an orange belt. man.... patricks' classes are as tuff as mine.
  6. i've seen way better clips on the net. are those guys really black belts. I can fix their form if they want help.
  7. step, double step, back step, front step, double step back, switch, back switch, step back (do not confuse with back step) and then front leg off step and rear leg off step. What steps do you use? Oh I can explain these if ya need. They are pretty standard in TKD schools. If you don't know them, then you TKD school is behind the rest.
  8. I hate a new belt. The tips are like curb feelers on an old car. You can poke out an eye if your not carefull!
  9. our students test in front of a 25 member panel of instuctors, all black belts. 10 kata 30 one steps(must know 60) 30 self defense(must know 60) 46 block 46 strikes 25 kicks 2 ten minute rounds of sparring. It's a real grueling test. My students perform the most difficult kicks of all the groups i've seen. The most difficult ones are, Jump turning reverse crescent, jump turning wheel, jump turning back, jump turning round house, butterfly kick and twin snap kick. I have a few students perform what we call tsunami kick. It's a double leg take off, jump turning round house, but you land on the foot that kicks. That's just for show tho. If you think the test is hard, try preparing your students to pass it!!!!!!
  10. When i see this tho, I wanna take their belt off and whip them with it.
  11. Cherish that belt for ever. Like an old glove or your favorite shoes, it fits only you. You may have a student one day worthy of recieving such an honor. It symbolizes more than some here can undrstand, Like a samuri sword it holds your spirit now.
  12. He sounds board and like he knows it all. I see that a lot in shodans but rarely with nidans. hmmmm, is he a problem student?
  13. you guys got so busted!! On a serious note tho, check out the instuctor rather than the art. Can he answer his student's questions. Does he understand why a technique works and have an explanation why something is done. Is he confident and humble. Is he aware of the pace of the class, challenging the student's when they need it, and backing off when they've had enough. I could go on, but you just have to feel out the instuctor, they will probably both do fine. And the chances of you getting into a "real" self defense situation is limited, so examine your reasons for traing too. Let a know what your choice is.
  14. I have only been on this forum a short time. it is obvious to my why White Warlock won that title, he has a lot of good stuff up in that head of his. And a quick note to monkey girl, you do have some funny posts, I can see why you were chosen. The others are eagually deserving i'm sure. Congratulations to all of you. To stand out above all the good people on this forum is quite an acomplishment.. I'm impressed.
  15. I hope you are around for another 4.5! I only discovered you about a month ago, but truly love this forum. My fiance however wants to kick your booty Patrick. You'd think that she'd be happy I spend my time here instead of some smut site. There is no pleasing some women. She's only a brown belt tho, and hasn't trained in a while, good luck to you!
  16. Design gear. Promote turnaments. write books and videos. Make an inovative web stie like Patrick did. I nvent a system of self defense, or polish an existing one and repackage it and make millions. and you can be a waiter at denny's.
  17. My TKD instuctor is Dino Homsey. 1987 wka #1 ranked world contender and north american champion in PKA. He made a few movies and was a really good fighter untill he thought he could box. I always wondered how he kept from kicking a guy when he was in a boxing match. How did he remember not to use his feet. He was a really great fighter and a great friend. Now that I am much older an instructor myself, I realise that he was just OK as an instructor. My current instuctor holds no titles and has made no movies. He is the best teacher in the world tho. His fountain of knowledge hasn't dried up in 20 + years of training together. Dino and I are still friends and when we get together.... we SPAR!!!! He still kicks my booty. I think that lineage isn't that important. I fight a little like Dino but still have my own style, as do my students. I have a more rounded knowledge of MA than dino and I've continued to study and learned tons more from teaching. Yes he can still kick my booty, but i can teach circles around him. So, do ya wanna get your butt kicked or do you wanna learn Karate.
  18. too funny If you ever get to arizona, I want you to contact me and come train with me. On that day, I promise to leave my stinky belt at home.
  19. Jussi, the point is you DID hear of it before. I've reread the thread as should you. Most of the posters state directly that they are aware of this tradition or imply it with thier response, even the ones that say to wash the belt. I hear things all the time that are new to me, and i've been a black belt more than half my enire life. Just cuz you haven't heard it doesn't make it not true. Being aware of myths are sometimes more important than being aware of the facts. I am different for being a black belt, my eye are open, as is my mind and my heart.
  20. I can't believe that i read this whole post. I want my three minutes of my life back.
  21. Our society has plenty of traditions, Sensei Rick. No need to look to Japan for traditions. As for not washing the belt, that is not a Japanese tradition. I didn't say that it was a japanese tradition at all. Read back. I said we don't know it's origins. And I do not agree with you that america has enough traditions at all. At least not ones that help us make a more peaceful society. I still say he shouldn't wash his belt. All martial artists know this, so it can be a tradition if you just let it. On another note, I have been going to 24 chickens for a long time it too is a great web site and i encourage all KF members to check out this site. ps. My instuctor told me about your 24 chickens web site too. I'm not kidding at all about that. We laugh at the name each and every time we tell another student about it. It too, will become a tradition in our school.
  22. I enjoyed reading your article, so well thought out and put together. I also teach some of these traditions. I always add that karate begins and ends with courtesy. If a beginner doesn’t know when to bow, I just say often. But always have courtesy in mind. I think that this will help contribute to a more peaceful society. I will think of all these things every time I teach. Thank you again for such a simple article with much meaning.
  23. No disrespect to WW but don't wash your belt. MA is about traditions and in this cheeseburger, bubble gum, download smut off the internet society a few traditions can't hurt. As an instuctor I above all try to remain consistent on traditions. From the way we line up to taking care of yourself and your uniform. Including tying and wearing a belt. My instrucor, right or wrong, told me not to wash my belt..... as did his. Learn and change as a teacher as you would in a fight. But lets keep some things around so that the art somewhat resembles it's intent. I know all about belts coming from Kano and judo and this whole not washing thing was probably a joke in some school and got spread the next day at a turney or something. But most of us know this. We have all heard of it and uphold it even without knowing it's origin. There is no word in the japanese language for block. "uke" means to recieve, not block. The word for block in japanese refers to the things you build your house with. And knowing there is no word for block in the style i teach, doesn't mean i can't keep my hands up. I do this because of tradition of blocking my face. My instructor taught me to do this.
  24. any ground fighting art should be considered. My instuctor has a BB in judo and TKD. He loves that he can do a take down and a descent kick. Both depend on the instructor tho. I prefer to learn an art with all the traditions for example. I wouldn't be happy in achool that's main focus was sport competition. Aikido is a great art but, I have seen a lot of fighting in that style on the knees and that seems unsound to my knees. those stances with one knee down hurt me to just look at. Judo IMO will help you more with take downs that Aikido. That is just my thought tho, so let's not attack me if you're an aikido person. Aikido to me seems like the odoneel continuous control techs. used be police. They work better if your foe is untrained and cooperating. Judo seems more to the point and you are in control rather than using your opponents energy against him, you are using YOUR energy to CONTROL him. Hope that was helpful.
