I have studied this thoroughly and co,pletely agree. And in doing so i have a completely different belting system for my adults than I do for children. The children in my school have 27 belts between white and black. Adults ony have nine. It's the same belt, It just has a stripe down the middle for the kids, three stripes at each belt for the kids hence 3 X 9 =27. Getting a new stripe for the kids means a lot and I can do it for them so they feel better about themselves and slow them down on the way to BB. None of the kids know that I grade the adults differently, I don't know how I've managed to keep the secret.

I hope you weren't watching "will and grace" while you did this. On a more serious note, I have not heard of this brand, how much was it and was it worth the money?

Muay tai shorts from fairtex (sp) I'm not sure where I got mine but they have some wierd tai words on them. Everyone asks me what they say, I know they're just not looking at the writing. When A guy asks me, I say they commemorate my dead instructor, or they mean dragon death or something like that. When a female asks I say it means, "why you looking at this guys crotch.

That is embarrasing!!!! You are a far better black belt than me for admitting that. I would never admit to liking Van DAmme!!! On the serious side, I love the original Kung fu series. David Carridine is pathetic at best as far as a MA goes, but that show was so great. I love when master PO (the blind one) would fight multiple opponents and whip em up good. That series would have been so much better with bruce lee. I'm glad america is getting over it's prejiduces. Peace to all.

And just remember, your chances of having a knife pulled on you are about the same as winning the p0owerball. The chance that you are carrying your nunchucku at that exact same moment are about the same as winning the powerball twice. The knife is usually legal and the chucks rarely are. If you practice this do it with a padded chuck for a demo. but.... I was on the Santa Monica pier the other day (12-27-05) if ya saw me. anyway, I saw a couple of cops on the boardwalk and they were carrying chucks, Right where the "tonfa" used to be. I was freaked and asked the cop about them. He said that there are about 20 officers in his sqaud that are trained in them and that you have a lot of traing to do before they let you loose with them. He echoed what I have taught all along, that they are not a perfect striking weapon, but they are good for lock and submissions. Later I noticed another officer with them too. Being from arizona I know this isn't happening here yet, but those californians, they are so up to date huh??? I have a demo team and we feature chucks in part of my team however, it's just flash, and gets the crowd roared up. take care.[/i]

What do you think is the most important kata to learn?
Sensei Rick replied to Samurai Shotokan's topic in Karate
tekki shodan, naihanchi, haifanchi, however you want to call it. REpresents my own training and therefor if I could only do one kata my whole life, that would be it. In my school I teach it upright as you may know it. Then it is taught against a wall Keeping you back on the wall, concentrating on the hand motions, and using the wall as a weapon. Then, I teach it on the ground as a grappling form. There is much bunkai in that kata. Doing it these three ways, will open your mind to more bunkai. Another kata that will teach you how to fight is "ten no kata" This is a shotokan kata, but I have yet to find a shoto kan school that teaches it. It is in the back of karate do kyohon. You can do it ura and omote. Forward or backward. It is a series of blocks and counters. I like to teach this kata because mistakes can't be hidden. Do you know this kata? anyone? -
Wish i would have thought of this clever marketing sceme first. It remids me of "rex kwan do" from napolian dynamite!!!

Master H, telson, and others who enter this forum. I would really like specifics on the requirements for first degree. I am designing a curriculum for a style that I am not ranked in. I would like to see some averages of what's out there so I can be assured that the requirements are somewhat of an acceptable standard. I know many of the feelings about testing and such, but beliefs in these are not what i'm looking for. And i'm not asking about higher dan ranking requirement either. I want real people, who teach or have earned a real black belt to post what you know, or what you were tested for on your sho dan testing. I do not usually post in my own forum and only did so to get this on track. this is very important to me, so thank you in advance for your help.[/i][/code]

ask the complaining parent what style they have their black belt in. Tell them to trust you, the black belt, what the rank should look like.

Karate Kid
Sensei Rick replied to ShotokanKid's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I agree 100% Are you saying the only valid way to teach a block is to have the student stand in a kihon line. put there fist by the ear, and move it downward. that's nonsense, I admire the inovative way he taught. -
How long till you got Black Belt
Sensei Rick replied to AceKing's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I think it depends on how many times a week you train. I've heard and read a few items on time and the best yet is 666 hours. Creepy huh?!? Anything less than 500 and more than 1000 hours seem a little out of line. I would say my belt took 1000 hours of training tho. -
Karate Kid
Sensei Rick replied to ShotokanKid's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
The movie was a great boost. The "crane kick" a simple jump front snap kick has become the "stair way to heaven" of karate. People in the music world think you play good when you can play that song (so simple...... yet annoying. When People find out I'm a MA teacher and that i teach kids, they ask if I teach that kick (annoying) The second movie tho is historically correct from what I can tell. I know that the myagi name is associated with the origins of karate in okinawa (sp) As for any bad effect I really see none. Kids will drop out of class when they find out you cant be a black belt in 3 mos. whether or not they have seen that movie. I love the tournament scene. As if they have a graphic artist at the tournament making the signs showing who beat who and who will advance to the next round. Oh, and the bare knuckle stuff, Danny was hard core!! -
Jong Fabrication
Sensei Rick replied to MizuRyu's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I have heard of people making the arms out of baseball bats and a fewminutes on a lathe. I have a friend who found one in a thrift store and paid 60 bucks for it! I love the thing but it's built for someone much shorter than me, so I'd have to build my own too. oh, and I'm cheap (poor) -
Chin Na
Sensei Rick replied to MizuRyu's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I'd love to learn chin na. It is facinating. I recently learned 18 seiaing hands. It's a series of locks starting from a handshake. I love the names they give each move so that you can remember them. I changed some of the names so my Little kids can remember them. I recall the scene in crouching tiger, when the jade fox locked that guard up while she fought the police officer whose wife she killed. Li Mu Bai then came along and "unlocked" him. I'm not sure these skills exsist in that context, but i know they work on some level. I can't wait to learn more, I just don't know a trust worthy teacher in my area. -
Wing Chun stepping
Sensei Rick replied to MizuRyu's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
The foot work that I teach is very effective. It has it's basis in TKD. I beleive that it's important to land in a firhgting stance as quickly as possible after an attack so that you can do a follow up if needed. It's foundation is for the olympic TKD I think, but it worlks well in street fighting as well. I Don't know a web site for it but i'm sure a google search will help you. Weaight distribution is going to be great debate, but i use front leg. that is,,,,,,,, most my weight is on my front leg. Good luck. -

I love the cane. It's the only weapon you can still take on a plane, and get on there first. As for formal study, I have seen a video or two. I would not use such. Adapt techniques from other weapons like tonfa. combine techniques from a straight weapon with that of a hooking weapon. I'm sure some smart guy on the forum will go on late night TV and steal this idea and make up some CANE style. Tae cane do or how about Jeet cane do. I've got y a started, now you can proceed. -
it's funny. My sensei is a 7 th dan. He has the first check that his dad wrote for his fisrt month of lessons some 47 years ago. He found the cancelled check after his father died, what a pack rat. In our style, his title is Hanshi, simply meaning 7th dan. He refuses to let us call him hanshi tho, and still insists only the title of sesnsei, and says I can call him dave. If I were to define a master I would look to how someone has furthered there martial art in there own and in other MA communities. How have they used there knowledge to further advance there system to the NON MA world and in our own world. And I would wany to know how much they know about there own art. I still look at our techniques and look to see where theyare flawed and where they work. I know of People I would call a master, but they would never accept that title. I think if you are a master, you are too old to want a computer and aren't posting on this forum.

Kung fu questions
Sensei Rick replied to BruceLeeWasGod's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
you wil notice that the same teams do not win the super bowl or the world series each year. They depend on the players, team name doesn't win. This is the answer to your questions. The winner of the fight depends on the players. I could give you more to this answer, but that's not the kind of teacher I am. Students remember more when they come up with the answer themselves. Here is the path, now walk grasshopper.
