  1. yes, very effective. it;s a strong part of your body and can take good impact. as for the comment about the kicks and catalogging. there are only so many ways to move the leg and foot, but if you study my list, there are many differences, its a strong kicking foundation.... yet there are similarities. many instuctors tho have been impressed with the kicks my students do. but, most wouldn't be effective in a fight. in a fight.... knee the groin, go home and have lunch.
  2. it's sad, I used to work for a company that did contract work for child protective services. Children would cry to go home with their crack head mothers that were prostitutes who would leave them alone while they turned tricks. People would try to help these children, and the would cry and outstretch their arms to their moms. I had to quit because the anguish was to hard to take. I'm feeling that again. 1. if your instuctor is innocent, then he would sue the police for falsely arresting him, and become rich beyond his dreams. In the mean time you would have found a different instructor. 2. If your instructor is guilty, he will be found so, and you will need to have a different instructor. In the mean time, while he is waiting to be found guilty, you should have found a different instructor. sounds like you need to find a different instructor.
  3. This is why it's never good to date your students. Sensei even lost his mind when I dated someone in a class that I wasn't the instructor. I will never ever do that again. Maybe cuz i'm about to get married, and my fiance says i'm not allowed to date. Done Preaching! Kids and adults do not learn the same way, and should not be in the class together. Some adults may be embarrassed when the little kids can do better than them, and are more flexible. The real issue is the learning thing. Your pace will be all off and your retention will suffer one way or the other. If you look at your kids classes, you have mostly younger kids, and teens don't wanna be white belts in front of younger higher ranking kids. Check this out, you'll see im right. If you have teens, they are high ranking and started long ago. Your classes will be short of teen white belts. We all want the best retention possible, so arranging your classes to accomidate the most students effectvely is best. I suggest years and years of trial and error. Good luck
  4. Mountain punch, is the same motion as mountain block, kinda bend side ways, then punch your opponent in the face and the groin at the same time. Ox Jaw, .... picture "paint the fence" from karate kid. Striking with the back of the wrist. (ball of the wrist block) but it's a strike. Oh ... this would be the "UP"of paint the fence. Does that make sense?

  7. funny, I must have been writing while parkerliniage wrote. but I don't count left and right as different kick. In jumping kick it depends on which foot you take off with and land on for the 3 variations. let me know if ya need more info. good work parkerliniage!
  8. well i don't have too much time, and posting my cirriculum would only make all the other instructors steal it so how bout a list of kicks front knee, snap, thrust crescent, reverse cresent, RH knee (round house knee) RH kick, side (front leg) ,jump snap=3 variations, back, axe, stomping. draw back RH, Turning RH, step behind side, step behind RH, turning back, jump RH=3 variations Turning side, low/hi RH, double step RH, dragon kick, side snap, checking. Turning rev. crescent, jump turn side, switch jump front, switch RH, hook, reverse RH Front sweeps.. , butterfly, turning hook, turning wheel, flying side, jump turning RH jump turning wheel, scissors kick, JUMP turning rev. crescent, jump turning back, twin snap, double flying side kick.(u end up kicking with both legs) sliding with front, RH, front thrust, back, side, turning back, and axe. Wushu buterfly, bfly with twist. I think thats all but I am doing this from memory and don't have my cirriculum in front of me. that's kinda the order there taught. I teach some others like 540s and stuff, but you get the idea. if ya really want blocks and strikes let me know. or maybe later if i have time.
  9. Ground fighting and bjj are great, but that's not what final fu is doing. Those arts are being handled by the ufc and others. If final fu did that, then they would be "copying", I'm sure they would be taken to task for that. The rules for final fu are set up to try and get you a good show. IE, a jump spinning kick is worth more than just a kick to the mid section= the producers are trying to get a more "flashy fight" They figure if the reward you for a moer complicated tech, then you will do it. And the reason for the light contact is so your fighters can do other events and the challenges that day. Plus it saves on your medical expenses and keep the contestants looking pretty. These kids on the show aren't trying to be ultimate fighters. It's more like combining karate with survivor or fear factor. I Don't know if the show is being run correctly, but I wish I had this Idea and put it to work. Only the ratings will tell if it is going to last. I encourage all of you that post in this forum to start a MA tv show that better exhibits "your" vision of the show. or maybe email them and give them GOOD ideas! I get what the producers are going for here. Will it be good for Martial arts? Of course it will. Kids that want to be the next final fu master will help pay the rent for a while until they realise it's hard work. The ones that realise that there is more to MA than being a "final fu" will stay in my classes and pay the rent for a lot longer. And guys.... Try not to be so hard a Ernie Raeys (sp) jr. ..... He has to eat too.
  10. oh man, he would have definitely have a members only jacket. and oakly terminator sunglasses. Maybe he would have kept van damm out of the movies?
  11. i've posted about this before. Rather than tell you what i think, I'll tell ya what ya need to know in our organization. In my style the shodan tests are: 20 kicks (must know 54 min.... ) 20 strikes (must know 54 min.... ) 20 blocks (must know 54 min.... ) 30 self defense (must know 60) 30 one steps (must know 60) 10 kata These are the things TESTED by a 30-member black belt panel. Obviously the student's must know more, these are just the minimum requirements. Please tell me about your style.
  12. I disagree with all of you and I can tell you why. There is a school down the street that say's I am garranteed a black belt in 18 months and I only have to pay $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
  13. I don't agree with everyone else here. I don't think this is a good idea, But I have stopped chasing after students. I have had a few student' in my life, even black belts, tell me they were gonna take a break. They have never returned. Students that I felt were more dedicated than even myself. I run into them at church or the mall, and it's always the same thing, they wish they never gave it up, and regret quitting. Yet they are embarrased to go back in front of their peers. You have your reasons, but I hope you reconsider.
  14. My sensei was ko'd by dillman at a seminar, and he can do it, but... I've covered that in another post. Pressure points are valid. but when to use them. I use them whne Im not fighting, when i am showing the parent of a studenthow you can stop someone without much effort. a small person against a big person. The points wake up when you hit them a few times too, try that out and you'll see. But, when to really use them. They will have little effect on a big brawler in a bar or a very agressive attacker imo. Many times though, I have been at a party and a guest gets out of line. You wouldn't want to brutilise a fellow party crasher, so just to calm him down without hurting him, awaken him to the possibility of future pain with a qick jab to a pressure point or a nice wrist lock. why kick to the face when a flick of the wrist will let him remember his place as a guest among friends. how about when your brother reminds your wife how good her sweater enhances her attributes, he's getting out of line, but your mom is looking...... what to do. grab his siatic nerve and let him laugh at the "funny bone" type feeling he gets in his leg and remind him that your a martial artist and your wife is spoken for. remember only use enough force for the situation at hand, and sometimes a pressure point is the key.
  15. grasshopper, I will instrct you in the ways of the ninja. My lessons are $100 an hour. Your first lesson begins now....Breatheeeeeeeaaahhhhh..............breathhhhhhheeeeeee............ Now close your eyes and listen to the sounds around you. Do you hear the water in the spring behind the monastary..... Do you hear the wind blowing the dandilions thru the air....... now, calm your heart and be aware of your breathing.....and slow it down......... repeat after me........... THERE IS NO SUCH THINGS AS A NINJA!!!! OH DON'T CRY! Okay, you can pay me in installments.
  16. These are all good posts. I would only add that bone is living tissue and cell like in it's structure. With impact these cells become more dense. You'll love having dense bones when your are old and fall and don't break your hip like the rest of the droolers at shady acres nursing home.
  17. I am about to have 42 students test for brown and black belt. This is going to happen April 2 nd. I teach them the five tenants of a martial artist. Modesty, perseverance indomitable spirit, self-control, etiquette. Before the test I Give many lectures about what a black belt is and what is expected of them and we practice forever for this test. I would like to have one word or one sentence from all the black belts here about what a black belt is to you. That’s my challenge keep it to one sentence. Then I’m going to combine them all and read them to the student’s before testing. Thanks guys.
  18. I have been a black belt for a long time and love people that don't wear gear, so much easier to prove my point on. My sensei likes to say that his black belts don't wear cups, they just block. Well, I wear a cup. I have not been hit in the junk in a long time, but I wear one. A new black belt of ours was sparring me, and I asked him if he had a cup on, He said "we " don't wear cups. I made him put his cup on. I kicked him so many time between the legs he didn't block his head anymore. his hands just went to protect the "primary target". After I finally got him to double over, He agreed to never spar without equipment again, no matter what Sensei likes to brag about us. If someone isn't wearing head gear, then I wont attack the head so much, and they wont learn to block as well. I encourage everyone to wear gear untill they can trust themselves, then they should still wear it untill they can trust your partner. once you have a partner that you can trust, you been sparring that person too long and you need a new partner, and you need to put your gear on again. save your ego for the ladies, and keep a good head on your shoulders so you can put your words together coheirently when you're an old man.
  19. SnS, I see it from a different angle. Don't teach them. And don'[t try to be everyones teacher. I just kicked someone out of my class tuesday. When I first started teaching I tried to be everyones teacher, I didn't want to loose one student. I kept chasing after students that didn't fit my schools goals or personality. This ended up irritating some of the "good" students that I wanted to keep. I learned a lot those first few years. My point is, these guys sound a bit like they could go either way. If they don't want to learn traditions, then they may not be a right fit for your school. People are always impressed with the size of my program, which is running currently around 700 students. but more impressive than that, is the number of students I turn away. I have read some of your other posts and it doesn't sound like you need these students to keep you lights on so only take them on if they meet your minimum criteria.
  20. Good choice patrick, well done martialarthur
  21. I can't believe this topic wont die. Ninja's are the black hooded sheep of martial arts. I saw that discovery show too, I respected it till i saw the ninja guy and the secret manual. IF YOU ARE TRAINING AT A NINJA SCHOOL, YOU ARE BEING RIPPED OFF. (more than likely) unless of course you instructor is a 14th degree, then he is totally legit. good luck!!!!!! )
  22. I could tell you, but I'd have to kill you. I'd use my secret ninja death technique, and there is no defense.
  23. Sensei says, There are only two belts in karate, one is white and the other is black, if you are not one you are other, anythiong else is a multi colored perfect attendance award. He leaves there mouths open with that one.
