  1. PRIDE = Better fighters and better cards. Why because they pay their fighters millions where the UFC has been known to pay $500.00. The money attracts the best from all over.
  2. On the first part thank you for repeating what I said as if you said something different. And on the second who do you train under because you can check my lineage directly. There's me, Luiz Palhares, Rickson Gracie, Helio Gracie, Carlos Gracie and Count Mitsuyo Maeda. Maeda was a former Jujitsu Champion. And Kano subtracted more than he combined. You can check instructor lineage on www. bjj.org
  3. If you are training with gracie barra in florida you should have all this info from the source. Is your instructor Marcio Simas?
  4. Kano was a JuJitsu master and took throws and some ground work to create judo for sport not the other way around. The Gracies tested Jiu Jitsu in the streets of Brasil and against other styles in Brasil. Are we repeating what we've heard or are we researching this stuff for ourselves. To find the truth we must crossreference. The truth is consistant and never changes.
  5. Actually if tkdguy knows anything about bodybuilding you would know its bad for your health. My school used to be in a gym with competitive bodybuilders and they all gas and yes I do put them on the ground submit them at will. Like I said I know from experience. And I'm talking about the unnatural type of bodybuilder. My favorite is to get them on their back because most can't breath very well with their own weight let alone mine on them too. P.S. I world championship in BJJ, a bronze at the Pan Ams And national gold medalist and absolute gold medalist. The big guys are not a problem.
  6. If you find an instructor that says it has to be this way and only this way BE CAREFUL. If the instructor is defensive and appears that he has something to prove beware. Check out the instructor and his or her accomplishments. My instructor comes up on several sites if you just google his name. If they have no full contact experience then I would not feel that they have enough experience for practical training. Many instructors can give you tools but cannot teach you how and when to use them.
  7. This is good because you probably open the Boxers eyes to BJJ. The submissions will come easier. In the beginning, especially for self-defense, it's not whether or not you had a hard time getting the submissions its just whether or not you get them period. Right now your body is still trying to coordinate itself to the movements and is actually using too many muscles to get the job done. Pick one technique and get with a partner once a day , apart from class, and do 50 reps of that one technique. There are lots of moves to choose from so just pick one that stands out to you. Do this and you'll not only see your game grow leaps and bounds but so will everyone else.
  8. What is your rank and how long have you been training? It sounds like you did pretty well. I'd say most of your trouble came due to the fact that you were concerned with hurting eachother which makes you pull techniques rather than commit to them.
  9. It doesn't take years to be effective with Submissions unless your wanting to compete on a pro level. If you just want to learn more about Grappling BJJ is the versitale grappling art out there because they do take moves from wrestling judo and sambo when they have proven effective. Also if you didn't like these guys on top of you then that should be motivation to learn from them how to prevent this from happening. They say BJJ is the pitbull of MA for a reason. Once they are on you they don't let go or let up. You only release one hold for a better one. Pitbulls have a love for fighting contact and so does BJJ. Game dogs fight in silence with no posturing and no theatrics no whining or yelping just forward movement always at the opponent. Maybe you should question your heart rather than your training.
  10. True they are being mixed because people are realizing the importance of being effective. BJJ has always adopted what worked and disregared or revamped what didn't. I'm sure other styles at some point in time have.
  11. Bodybuilders gas in about a minute and then they beg for forgiveness I know this from experience. My school used to be in a gym where their were some serious competitive bodybuilders. Skill involves more than just knowing a technique just knowing is like just owning a tool you don't know how to use. Skill = Experience, knowledge, timing and athletic ability.
  12. I guess none of you watched the first five UFC's.
  13. Who needs motivation? It's as simple as putting your body where it needs to be. If you really want something you first must show up.
  14. Sambo does work from the guard and ALL MMA fighters train BJJ even the wrestlers otherwise they will have no understanding of submissions and how to stay out of them.
  15. All orginating in Japan right so there no possible way they could have the same origins.
  16. I believe that most people are unaware of what BJJ truly has to offer. If you find a school that is thorough in its teachings then you will find that either one will be suffecient. Most schools of grappling in the U.S. are incorporating techniques from other grappling arts. This is basically reuniting family that has been out of touch for a while. Seperating yourself from others is a marketing scheme and so people need to look deeper into a school not just the title before choosing.
  17. You for sure do not want to exchange blows with a larger attacker, so grappling would be the better option. Technique has always proven itself over strength but this doesn't mean you won't both be taking a trip to the hospital.
  18. I had a small school until I took a huge step and moved into a mall and I now pick up 10 to 15 students a month.
  19. The key to these escapes is to tuck your bottom elbow by turning to your side before your opponent gains control of the arm. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of escape.
  20. Find a mixed martial arts school and fight in the ring. 1 You won't have people pressing charges. 2 You won't get shot or stabbed. I believe what your looking for is a mixture of BJJ, Boxing, Muay Thai Wrestling and Judo.
  21. Alcohol is a depressant, so if you are prone to depression then this is very bad. If you are a competitor then no alcohol one month before. I grapple on the professional level and do so almost once a month so it is good for since I never allow myself the opportunity to drink. There are more constructive things to do, but I am not against it, in moderation.
  22. Genetics play a huge role in the way your body stores fat and where. This will make it more difficult to shape your body the way you think it should look. Having body fat and being fat are two different things. If you are effective and effecient and love yourself then don't beat yourself up over a little insulation.
  23. Go to https://www.Lockflow.com
  24. Actually martial arts are 75% conditioning 25% skill. Most people can only put up a fight for about a minute and then their spent. Preparing yourself for the worst means reaching your bodies full potential.
