  1. Tapping is for class in the street you just break whatever you get.
  2. I don't know if this has been said because i didn't read the whole thread but i believe alot of people trained or not would just take that as a challenge rather than a warning. I would.
  3. On the subject of your techniques, it sounds typical of sport karate and this simpley will not do in NHB. I suggest no dashing whatsoever and lots of lateral movement away from the power hand. Also lots of head and hand movement and get with a wrestler and learn to sprawl. You need a gameplan and you need to know something about your opponent as Warlock mentioned earlier. Where do you live? State and city?
  4. Yes against a 300lb. attacker. I am only saying this because I have experience. And not to say that a smaller person could not knockout a larger but WOW the consequences if you don.t.
  5. Theories and opinions and yet I have to agree with subgrappler. How many arguing have the real experience to know what works and what you'll run into. MMA fighters would breeze through 99.9% of the population. People want to argue about this style thi and this sport that but are you a critic or are you out there learning about yourself and what you can do with and for your art. Stop living through other peoples experiences and find out for yourself.
  6. Without conditioning fights in the street won't last very long.
  7. Ive been competeing for four years now and I still get nervous. I never play any other sports either so I was not prepared for atmosphere, but I love it.
  8. Warlock are you picking on me?
  9. I was simpley answering the question about weight classes. And size does matter if you are the same skill level and I am speaking about Professionals not hobbiests or people that think they can fight because they do martial arts.
  10. Agreed but you are far more likely to run into this type of confrontation than life threatening. About 85% more likely. But you are right life threatening should be the main concern but one of these more common confrontations could pose a more serious threat.
  11. I disagree with the fighting because they like to fight most fights are over nothing with two people one of which absolutely does not want to fight. The other knows this and takes advantage of the situation to prove something to themselves.
  12. Its never run well but the brazilian teams bring good competition.
  13. Yeah but you live in Canada. And the name of this topic is not criminal stats and MA.
  14. Weight and strength matter when you are of the same skill level. And if you want to see what bodybuilding does to people go to the Arnold Classic and see for yourself. Also its a great event with Martial Arts tournaments and demonstrations.
  15. Unless you go to Brasil the chances of being attacked w/BJJ techniques are like NONE. Most people who start MA do so because of certain insecurities and others to so called get in shape. The point is most people will not fight when provoked and criminals are way too insecure to believe they need anyone to teach them how to fight. Criminals feed off fear and intimidation. And they rely on it. Back to the topic though if you want to learn to defend BJJ I'm sorry if you don't like it but you have to learn BJJ at least the basics. And keep in mind no matter how good you get theres always someone better . So lets not be paranoid here guys and girls.
  16. It snot so much that they wouldn't work as it is how they train. A school must remain open to be successful if the workouts are to hard or if there is too much contact people drop out. To keep the doors open they must create a place where people from all walks and all abilities can learn. So most schools will never produce quality fighters. If you are TMA don't get offended. Unless you are going to fight pro let it go. Everyone calls BJJ sport but there are two sides to every coin. I have no need to be offended by the label sport I am in the 5%!
  17. Well I guess non of us were there so I couldn't possibly know for sure . But the info cross referenced with info on the samurai suggest that the samurai used a style that included grappling throwing and striking it even shows samurai tripping up horses. I say shows because I believe that old pictures and carvings are more accurate than the written word. This style has always been refered to as Ju Jitsu. In those days the only distinction between styles was no more than a name and a few techniques that each group prefered. In BJJ now there are schools that teach their competitors to use one specific choke so that they stand out in the eyes of those watching. Everyone knows those chokes too , but they master that one choke so everyone thinks they are doing something different. It's all marketing and the Japanese were no different. In fact these small insignificant details have been past on. The bigger differences came with more distance. The same as if I told a story to one person and then inturn it was told to a hundred. The hundredth person would tell a different story.
  18. Things I would have done different. First I come from an extremely abusive background for example the last time my father beat my mother he did so with a rifle. Now if anyone knows anyone who is being abused they need support and they need to be educted with some self help knowledge fast. The individual must find it in themselves to remove themselves from this situation. Second this person would have found himself waking up in recovery. I know not everyone will agree with this but all this stuff about non-violent intervention is not always the answer. Sometimes you must set an example that these types of people will not be tolerated. Maybe I feel this way because I was abused. Everyone in life at some point run into a metaphorical tree and sometimes someone has to be the tree.
  19. Maeda may have been a student of Kano but was a JuJitsu master as well. Thats like saying because I've done TKD in the future people are going to say that my Jiu Jitsu came from TKD. How do you make Judo from JuJitsu and then make Jiu Jitsu from Judo doesn't make since. and from the lips from a video is not convincing. On T.V. you can easily manipulate what is being said. My instructor has been with the Gracies for 30 years and all the references I have say the same thing. Check out The Gracie Way. i
  20. Steroids make the muscles stronger than the tendons and so create weak joints. I teach Jiu Jistsu to many ex-bodybuilders and I'm trying to give you the facts not my opinion. Bodybuilders put a mack truck on a volvo frame and the heart and lungs don't grow along with the muscles so you have a four cylinder powering a mack truck.
  21. My name is Cliff and I train under Luiz Palhares. I had the privilege of hanging out with Marcio for a week before the Pan Ams. I'll send you our website address on your private message.
  22. For BJJ we only have look at https://www.bjj.org
  23. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Is only called that by americans in Brasil it is simply Jiu Jitsu because this is exactly what it is.
  24. Bodybuilders also have weak joints so attacking the joints with leverage is extremely effective.
